BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is the new fighter made and published by Arc System Works. If the characters above seem vaguely familiar, they should. Arc made the famous fighting series Guilty Gear. BlazBlue is the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. All of their over the top character designs and kick ass soundtrack have been put into BlazBlue. Now we have new characters and a completely new system of fighting. BlazBlue is released in Japan and North America on November 19th and 20th, respectively, for the PS3. You may be wondering what happened to Guilty Gear to make Arc totally drop their old series. Well, some legal stuff with their old publisher Sammy happened. Oh well. As I like to say...ONWARD!
So what is the new fighting system like? Well, it's 2D and has the basic 8 directions of any fighting game today. It has 4 attack buttons: Light (A), Medium (B), Heavy (C) and Drive (D). Drive activates special abilities for each character. Throwing and Throw Escapes are done by pressing B and C at the same time. Besides basic dashing and jumping, there are also double jumps, high (triple) jumps and air dashes. The more complex and game specific systems are listed below...
Guard Libra: When guarding or forcing your opponent to guard, this gauge will shift. When it fills up completely to one side, the guarding player will undergo a Barrier Crush and will be stunned temporarily.
Barrier Gauge: A gauge that regenerates over time, used for Barrier Guard. The defense capability of a character is lowered for a set period of time when this gauge reaches zero.
Barrier Guard: Pushes back the opponent and prevents the Guard Libra from shifting. Performed by pressing A and B at the same time while guarding.
Barrier Burst: Pushes the opponent away, even when guarding or receiving damage, thus canceling the enemy's combo in the latter case. If used offensively and guarded by the opponent, they will undergo a Barrier Crush. Uses 100% of the Barrier Gauge and leaves it to zero for the remainder of the round. Performed by pressing all four buttons at the same time.
Heat Gauge: An energy gauge needed to perform Distortion Drives and Rapid Cancels.
Counter Assault: Counters an opponent's attack while guarding. Consumes 50% of the Heat Gauge. Performed by pressing forward, A and B at the same time while guarding.
Rapid Cancel: Cancels the recovery time of an attack. Consumes 50% of the Heat Gauge. Performed by pressing A, B and C at the same time while attacking.
Distortion Drive: Special attacks unique to each character. Consumes 50% of the Heat Gauge. Performed with some arrow motions plus the Drive button.
Astral Heat: Special attacks unique to each character. Consumes 100% of the Heat Gauge. The conditions for using Astral Heats are simple: the player has to be fighting in the last round of each match, and his/her opponent has to have 20% of their health left. The player can then input the buttons needed for the Astral Heat. Astral Heats can be considered similar to Guilty Gear's Instant Kills.
So, who composes the crazy linup for BlazBlue? Let's find out...

Ragna the Bloodedge - The games primary badass. He's akin to Sol Badguy, without so much Freddy Mercury reference.
Height: 185 cm
Weight: 78 kg
Birthday: March 3
Bloodtype: B

The almighty force managing the "Operation", in order to obtain absolute power over the world, is this man who has rebelled against the "Earth and Space Information Control System". Known as the "God of Death", a bounty for his elimination has been placed in all the regions populated with branches of the Control System. In game, his tactics revolve around using his power and large sword to keep pressure on his opponents. His Drive Ability is known as Soul Eater, which is used to absorb the opponents life.

Jin Kisaragi - The secondary hero of BlazBlue. Akin to Ky Kiske from Guilty Gear. Unlike Ragna, he's got a sweet hobby.
Height: 178 cm
Weight: 61 kg
Birthday: February 14
Bloodtype: A
Gender: Male
Origin: England
Hobby: Vintage Motorcycles
From a prestigious family, this man is a retainer of the Control System's Kisaragi house. His class is Major. In the past, he had a distinguished military record during the "Ikaruga Civil War" that broke out, and was promoted to the position of Division Commander at an exceptionally young age. He is always cool and calm, though he is a deeply jealous, ambitious, and possessive person, with little care for others. His Drive Ability is known as Frost Bite, which specializes in freezing opponents.

Noel Vermillion - She's on the inside cover of the BlazBlue OST. Hot. She's also the character I want to learn when I get this damn game. (SEE THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST FOR "CONTEST" DETAILS!)
Height: 157 cm
Weight: 48 kg
Birthday: December 25
Bloodtype: A
Gender: Female

Because of her outstanding combat ability and suitable operation evaluations, she was selected to be Jin Kisaragi's direct subordinate in her youth. The two were acquaintances in officer's academy, though Noel thought Jin was extremely weak. However, on a certain mission handed down from the Control System, her preconceptions were changed. Near the end of her story, it is revealed that she is actually v -12-, the predecessor of v -13-, though she doesn't remember it. Her Drive Ability is known as Chain Revolver, which specializes in chain linking her combos together.

Iron Tager (TR-0009) - This games Potemkin. Hopefully he isn't as OP as the fuck was in Guilty Gear Accent Core...
Height: 240 cm
Weight: 550 kg
Day remodeled: November 23
Bloodtype: Natural oil
Gender: Male
Origin: Unknown (Doesn’t remember)
Hobby: Bottle-ships
Originally the leader of a battle unit which revolved around physical combat, he was forced to withdraw from the front lines after sustaining a mortal wound in the Ikaruga Civil War. He was brought back from the brink of death at the hands of the scientist "Kokonoe" and revived as a cyborg, and is currently assigned to a combat unit under the direct control of Kokonoe. He seems to be pursuing Ragna, though his goals are entirely unclear. He is also shown to be working with Litchi Faye Ling, and apparently also knows about Arakune. His Drive Ability is Voltech Battler, which specializes in using electricity and magnetism so he can grab his enemies.

Rachel Alucard - No comment.

Weight: 31 kg
Birthday: October 31
Bloodtype: Unknown
Gender: Female

A blood-sucking vampire who is the head of the Alucard family and who dresses in a gothic lolita style. As the head of the family an enormous castle and a servant have been handed down to her from previous generations. She carries a cat-shaped umbrella called Nago and fights using a chubby, red bat familiar called Gii. She slipped out of her castle in search of fun because she hates to be bored. She also seems to be constantly following Ragna around, which irritates him and causes him to tell her to go home. Her Drive Ability is Sylphide, which allows her to manipulate wind.

Taokaka - Kinda creepy. The huge paws and hood and...grin...
Height: 165 cm
Weight: 42 kg
Birthday: February 22
Bloodtype: O
Gender: Female
Origin: Kaka Village
Hobby: Naps, Food
A young catgirl of the Kaka tribe who live in the lower class part of Kagutsuchi. Her coat is equipped with massive paw-like hands that include long, retractable claws. She wants to get back the sky above her village that was sealed off with an enormous plate by humans who came to the land and started building a big city. She left her village in search of someone called Ragna after she heard that you could gain a lot of money for defeating him. Apparently she is good friends with Litchi Faye Ling. She doesn't know it, but she is a descendant of bio-weapons created from one of the six heroes, Jyuubei. Her Drive Ability is known as Dancing Edge: Reckless Kitty, which specializes at dashing at high speeds with a slash attack.

Litchi Faye Ling - Do I need to make a comment here? Avoiding the obvious, I like Noel more.
Height: 170 cm
Weight: 58 kg
Birthday: July 7
Bloodtype: AB
Gender: Female
Origin: Shanghai, China
Hobby: Mahjong
A doctor in the oriental part of Kagutsuchi. Apparently, she is vital to the town because of her profession and her knack for sensing others' needs. She is currently pursuing Arakune, determined to end his life if she can't get him back to normal, and also works with Tager under Kokonoe. Her Drive Ability is Mantenbou, which manipulates her staff into attacking opponents by itself.

Arakune - All I can think of is Eddie. If he plays like Eddie did, we're all fucked.
Height: 20-200 cm
Weight: 5-1000 kg
Birthday: Unknown
Bloodtype: Unknown
Gender: Unknown
Origin: Unknown
Hobby: Unknown
Once a man named Han that worked alongside Iron Tager and Litchi Faye Ling, Arakune is an occult being that is constantly seeking knowledge. Its body houses innumerable insects. Currently, it lives under the streets of Kagutsuchi. Because it needs to absorb large amounts of life force to continue its existence, it frequently attacks those of the Kaka tribe and humans alike. It also keeps a diary that it writes what has gone on during its life. Recently, it has sensed the presence of a being with unheard of levels of life force (in other words, a being with the Azure blood of the beast), which has caused it to stir. Its Drive Ability is Crimson, which curses the opponent to where several flying insects will attack him/her.

Bang Shishigami - FINALLY! My favorite character of the BlazBlue lineup! He's a fucking ninja. He used a GIANT NAIL. Come on. Is that now awesome? His name is Bang! That is awesome.
Height: 192 cm
Weight: 105 kg
Birthday: January 1
Bloodtype: B
Gender: Male
Origin: Hino-Kuni
Hobby: Unknown
An apparently senile yet warm-hearted man who believes that he is a superhero dedicated to protecting the peace, dreams, and order of Kagutsuchi from the forces of evil, Bang is a ninja who has mastered various techniques. His Drive Ability is Burning Heart, which not only makes him fully use his ninja skills, but also places emblems every time he lands a hit with his firey punches, and when all four emblems are placed, he can use a move to power up that resembles a scene in Dragon Ball Z where Goku powers up and Vegeta scans him for his power level with his scouter as he does so. (I would put a joke here but...)

Carl Clover - No comment.
Height: 144 cm
Weight: 35 kg
Birthday: May 5
Bloodtype: AB
Gender: Male
Origin: Austria
Hobby: Reading
A young boy wearing a top hat who fights using a large mechanical maid puppet named Nirvana, whom he often calls his sister. Having heard of a bounty on Ragna's head, Carl decided to go after Ragna all by himself. However, people didn't like his actions very much, and this led them to give him his status as a vigilante. His Drive Ability is AutoMaton, which controls Nirvana.
So that is the linup, not including bosses. That is all I have to say on the game. Have some gameplay videos to end the thread. I reccomend you watch them in high quality...

Now, I have a proposition for anyone here who's actually read this far. You may or may not have been paying attention in the character profiles when I said I'm having a "contest". I put contest in quotes because it's really just helping me out a bit with a small reward. If you can find somewhere that I can order this game and get it shipped within or to the US, I'll give you a free copy of Half-Life 2 and a guest pass for The Ship. It's not much, but I can't fucking find where to buy this game. When you give me a link that will guarantee shipping to the US and I buy the game (shouldn't take too long ;)), I'll give you the games. Easy as that. Please help me out. :(
Ignore this now. It's not out for console...yet.

Random side note: No traps this game. Thank Christ.
This is for PC right? If it can not be obtained by legal means, I'm pretty sure it's ok to download it like all other Doujin games.
Noel, I bet there's porn of her somewhere already.

Reading helps. First paragraph.

No problem :)
So I'm canning the "contest" because I'm an idiot. Despite all anticipation of this being a PS3 game on release, it's only for arcade cabs. SIGH.
FFFFFFUUUUUUUU-!!!
Whole new wacky characters and a new starting battle phrase?
This better be good. I LOVED Guilty Gear.
EDIT: Rachel is the new Slayer, I can feel it
I've always wanted to try Guilty Gear, the characters and gameplay looks amazing.
This game also looks amazing, too bad I own a 360 and not a PS3 :(

Guilty Gear is hard to get into. Takes a lot of practice.

She isn't. At ALL.
But they've already announced DLC (YES, FOR THE ARCADE CABS) in the form of characters, so maybe you'll even see a complete Slayer ripoff, or better yet, Slayer himself.
I hope this does end up coming to PS3, it seems silly to keep it in arcades.

This guy is cool.

You won't be seeing any of the old Guilty Gear character. They belong to Sammy. They did the publishing, so they own the rights. BlazBlue is made and published by Arc alone.
And the "DLC" may really be just an update. I wouldn't be surprised. Arc did the same thing with Guilty Gear.

Is it harder than most fighting games or something?

Yeah I figured as much. Oh well, Slayer was my best character in Guilty Gear, guess I'll have to get used to somebody else. Almost as if it were a new game :O
Is it harder than most fighting games or something?
Yeah. It's got a lot of stuff to learn. Check it. BlazBlue is apparently easier to pick up then Guilty Gear, which wouldn't surprise me. A little dubing down never killed anyone (ala SF3 to SF4).
I just need a console release...NOW.
God that first picture is the poster child of the typical anime character, long spiky hair, bigass jacket, HUGE SWORD.

Welcome to Japan. What more can you ask for?
I still like his design.

HOLY JEEBUS IT'S think FROM NIJIKAKU BRB LAWSUIT.

The title sounds stupid. Guilty Gear to BlazBlue? Lame. And why is there a subtitle to the first game in a new series?
Weeaboo
The title sounds stupid. Guilty Gear to BlazBlue? Lame. And why is there a subtitle to the first game in a new series?
Guilty Gear sounds as dumb as BlazBlue. How does Guilty Gear make sence? And a lot of games have subtitles, regardless of being the first or only game in a series...
Guilty Gear makes sense because there's freaks of nature called Gears running around
Guilty Gear makes sense because there's freaks of nature called Gears running around
Not a lot of people know or care about that. I only know because I got bored enough to look at each character in Wikipedia because I wanted to know their musical references.
Another thing which this game lacks, sadly. :(

Yeah I did enjoy the musical references and the cool music playing throughout the game. This seems like it has some pretty good tunes though. :)

Oh, the music is top in this still. I have the OST.
Oh, the music is top in this still. I have the OST.
Very nice.
I really hope they announce something about consoles for this soon D: It seems silly that Arc would just not put it on consoles at all.
Guilty Gear makes sense because there's freaks of nature called Gears running around
Guilty Gear doesn't make sense, I guess, I don't know much about the series, but it sounds cool and at least contains two separate words. What is Blaz? Might as well call a game Flim Flom Gaz Dren Blip Lop: The Rom Pim Z if the title doesn't have to make sense or sound right.
Can't wait for this game!
Can't wait for this game!
Oh hell yes. It comes out later this month (30th I believe). I have mine pre-ordered from GameStop. I bought the limited edition online, which is the only place you can get it. Comes with a great amount of stuff.
