What is League of Legends?
For those not familiar with DotA, the gameplay of League of Legends can best be described as a session-based action RPG. The developers of LoL classify it in a new genre entirely, as a MOBA or “Multiplayer Online Battle Arena”. You start the game at level one, with a small amount of gold, and no items. As you play, you receive experience and gold. This allows you to level up and purchase items, which increases both the power of your champions abilities, as well as their core stats. The main goal of every match is to destroy the opposing team's "Nexus", a structure found at the heart of their base. To get there, you must first fight your way past hordes of computer controlled monsters, also known as minions, which continuously spawn from the enemy base. The base itself is protected by structures called turrets, which also must be destroyed. Whichever team destroys the other team's Nexus first, wins the game. It's truly a team oriented game, and you need to work together to succeed.
[release]Why should I play League of Legends over DotA?
*New and original playable champions.
*Built-in surrender functionality.
*A new in-game interface, with controls designed for this style of play.
*Account-level progression, adding out-of-game strategic depth and customization, known as the summoner system. This includes Runes and Masteries.
*Regular updates with many more features to come!
*An improved mini-map that shows your champion's pathing.
*Multiple maps, (Summoner's Rift, Summoner's Rift: Winter, Twisted Treeline, The Proving Grounds and The Crystal Scar)
*Easier to pick up and learn
*Did I mention the game is completely FREE?[/release]
Game Mechanics:
Summoner Spells
You are allowed the use of two Summoner Spells in any match of League of Legends. You can choose from a large variety prior to the start of a game. They are all unique, and can easily alter the game in your favor if you use them correctly.
Masteries
You can put up to 30 points, which are gained upon leveling up, into three categories of masteries - offense, defense, and utility. Some of the more advanced masteries require investment in lesser masteries. Summoner masteries are not set in stone; depending on the champion that you want to play, they may be changed to better suit your needs. You can even set them while selecting your champion before a match begins, so if your favorite champion is taken, you can change your masteries to better suit another.
Runes
Before queuing for a match, you can make use of "Runes" to increase your champion's power. There are four types of Runes that you can use: glyphs, marks, seals, and quintessences. Before a match begins, you can choose from one of up to nine different rune configurations you have previously set in your Runebook. This allows for maximum flexibility in choosing a Runebook that is best suited for whatever champion end up using. You CANNOT change these while selecting your champion, so choose wisely before entering the queue. Even if you are unsure of how you want to build your champion, you should always select a rune page before entering the game. Runes can only benefit your character, and are never detrimental.

Here is the official list of all the champions in the game
Every champion has a role to play. Here's the general archetypes of champions found within the game:
Assassin: These champions specialize in taking out other champions. They are usually pretty frail, but make up for this in increased mobility with blinks, teleports, jumps, and even stealth abilities. These champions (a la their namesake) get into the action, burst down an enemy, and walk right out.
Tank: They have the most health, the most armor, and the most magic resistance. These are the champions that initiate team fights and soak all the damage. They don't generally get as many kills as other champions, but they are great at getting assists. Some of them can force champions into attacking them, some of them can stun, while others have forms of "crowd control" that affect the entire enemy team.
Attack Damage Carry (ADC for short): These champions are ranged and specialize in dealing damage damage consecutively. They are usually found behind the tanks and rely on attack damage, attack speed and armor penetration.
Ability Power Carry (AP carry for short): AP Carries are capable of extreme burst damage and rely on items that give them ability power and magic penetration. AP Carries can be sorted into sub classes but they generally deal a lot of damage in a short time frame and then have to wait for cooldowns.
Support: These are the champions that help the team in other ways besides kills. Supports typically help the team stay alive via heals, shields and aura items. They can also help the team get kills with their crowd control.

Q: Is it difficult to unlock champions?
Not really. For one thing, Riot selects ten new champions every week. For that week, the champions they selected are free to play. However, if you want to purchase a champion forever, you can use the Influence Points you earn while playing the game. Champions cost various amounts of IP, from 450 IP all the way up to 6300 IP. Winning a game, on average, nets you around 80-120IP. If it's your first win of the day, it's usually around 250 IP. Losing games even nets you around 60 IP. The free champions give you a taste, whilst IP is primarily used to unlock the champions you really liked when they were free.
Q: My friend and I want to play in the same game. Can we?
Of course! If you're new, you might want to stick with the practice mode before you move onto the normal or ranked mode. People in the normal and ranked modes know what they are doing, especially the players in the ranked mode. You and your friend can practice against bots and get a feel of the game itself in practice mode.
The only catch is you have to be on the same server as your friends. Most people will want to either play on the North America, EU West and EU Nordic & East servers. If you're Australian play on the North American server. There are other servers that are exclusive to specific countries like Korea, China, Turkey and Singapore.
Q: I'm amazing at DotA and everything else DotA related, why should I bother?
Riot is passionate about the competitive scene in LoL. They hold sponsored tournaments all year long which build up into a grand finals ladder. The prizes of these tournaments are nothing to scoff at. If you have the ability to play well then competing in LoL could be for you.
[release]Q: I'm signed up. Now what?
*Start off with the tutorial! It will teach you the basic controls, game play mechanics, and the objectives of the game.
*Once you have a good handle on that, start a practice game and add bots. Practice mode allows you to explore the map and try out new champion,s without having to worry about playing well. The Bots aren't very difficult to beat, so don't expect them to be on par with actual players.
*The Co-op vs. AI mode puts you against harder bots with a team of real players. Great way to practice working together with others.
*Look up character guides on solomid.net or ask us here. We can, usually, give good advice for any champion.
*When you feel like you're ready, join a Normal Game with solo queue![/release]

Played my first ranked game in years and won. Think I'll stop playing now and savour this moment.
Well, since I've been playing LoL a bit more often:
I've never jungled (in LoL), could someone give me some tips/info for it?
Champs, items, generic runes/masteries, "strategies", etc.
Out of my tilt; promotion matches to silver III
Vlad is a REALLY strong pick. Basically win every teamfight with ult. If I get a rumble too its over as soon as we press R.
Bought Kassadin. Seems REALLY weak early game.

He can't do very much early game. Until level 6 he's gotta play it carefully otherwise he'll be dead in no-time.

I only played him in a bot game but it felt like he had no real burst even at 6. Didn't feel like I could secure a kill til around 13
He can harrass somewhat with his Q. But yeah just play safe till 6.

Depends. Against squishy mids his burst is quite good starting from 6, but against the tankier foes I guess you won't do as much.
anyone can be better than him!!
Had three games today where i got 8+ kills and no deaths, got to 6300 ip too. Torn between thresh, vi, an elise though. I'm mainly a top player, but i want thresh so I can have some fun supporting for once :v: heard playing him top is fun, if gimmicky though.

once you're at 6 you can just go R -> Q -> E (if you have it) and deal a bunch of damage to the enemy mid laner, with almost no chance of retaliation because of the silence and slow. you can do that about once every 10 seconds pretty easily, and the damage adds up very quickly
blade of the ruined king elise is OP
blade of the ruined king ANYBODY is op god damn the active is hilarious
That video posted last thread about Dyrus really annoyed me. Not because it was funny, but because it was just taken from his channel and then posted on another.

Jungling is all about killing jungle creeps for various reasons, the main ones being that you have a player that can roam+gank, as well as meaning that top can have solo XP and farm.
Your main job is to start at a buff (depending which jungler your playing) and move through the jungle until there is an opportune time to gank. This image gives a pretty good visualization of the main jungle route you should be taking. Make sure you pack smite and smite your buffs to prevent them from being stolen and giving you a better time in the jungle.

The purpose of a gank is to do one of three things: burn summoner spells, snowball the lane, or pick up kills. You want to generally wait until your double buffed to gank, unless you are very confident you can pull off a successful early gank.
Jungle champions are generally tanky with aoe (for jungle clearing), sustain (lifesteal/spellvamp to stay alive in the jungle), have hard CC (for ganks). Good jungle champions for beginners include Warwick, Udyr, Nocturne(imo) and volibear.
As a rune page movement speed quints are a must on most champs. Armour yellows and Magic resist blues are generally pretty good, as well as attack speed reds. Common items include building hunters machete/5pots as the first item, getting spirit stone/madreds + boots from there, and building recommended items after that should be good. There are plenty of great guides out there that go into more detail. If you want to learn a particular champion, SaintVicious' jungleology video's really help. There are also plenty of pro players (that can give much better advice than me) that stream a lot on twitch.com. Some good junglers to watch are TheOddOne, Snoopeh and SaintVicious. Hope this helps with jungling, if anybody see's anything they disagree with, please point it out. GLHF
Jungling is all about killing
Actually I have a question. Is there any hard and fast rule, or even just a good general one, of when you should give the kills to your laner? I mostly only jungle Vi if I get that role, and I've noticed that I fall really far behind if I don't get kills, but I also thought it was always better to give the laner kills. I'm not sure if that might be because I'm trying to gank too much, though.
Also when should one upgrade the hunter's machete and when should one sell it? Is rushing boots a good idea, or is that what the ms quints are for?
-snip-
Thank you, this should come in handy.
I've jungled in DotA before but jungling in LoL is pretty different, though it's objetive is the same.

I tend to leave the kills to the laner, but If I see they can't get it or I realy need it/they don't , I'll take it.
Also the idea of ganking is a surprise attack when the enemy is is a bad position, you shouldn't attack when they can defend themselves properly. Unless the laner is about to get killed and you can prevent it.

Buying machete/pots first is what you want to start off with. Spirit stone is a very good item for clearing, and it's upgrades all have very good passives, making it a very flexible item depending on how you want to build. Rushing boots isn't necessary straight away, but tier one are very good for fast ganks and getting between camps quicker. I generally go machete/pots - boots - spirit stone - tier 2 boots - core build. As for giving the laner kills, 90% of the time you want to give them the kills. Jungler's play an almost support type role, and snowballing your lanes is a key way to victory. If you allow your top/adc/mid to get fed, they can carry the game for you. Assists are also almost worth as much as gold. The only time you would ever want to get the kill if the team mate in your lane died, or if you getting the kill is the only way of securing it. Remember, you getting the kill is better than neither you nor your team mate getting it. If you feel like you are falling behind exp/gold wise, go back into the jungle and farm up a bit. A good way to measure what level you should be at is the adc/support or the enemy jungler.

Out of experience, I tend to try and give first blood to my lanes but if I see that there is any chance of the enemy escaping, I try my best to secure the kill. After first blood, it doesn't matter as much who gets the kills as long as they die, the amount of times I've attempted to feed a kill to my teammate and the enemy escaping is off the chart, and then you end up blaming yourself every time because you start to think "I could have killed them". Don't chance it, It's better if you give your laner kills, but it's also better if you get the kill compared to them getting away on a slither of health.
who should i get as a new jungler? Hecarim or Volibear?

They both have a similar role to play. They're both tanky initiators, however I imagine volibear being able to deal more damage than Hecarim, however Hecarim has more reliable initiation and disruption. I think voli is a bit harder to play than heca for the simple fact that if the enemy has a lux or morgana or anything that can snare/stop you from running at them, your initiation is gone and they can turn around on you. Hecarim can't be interrupted during his and can disrupt even further using his E, plus with Spirit of the elder lizard, hecarim still does damage in a team fight.
