• Why are old games scarier?

So ive played a lot of horror games, old and new. The weird thing is, games like Afraid of monsters DC and System shock 2 are 100x scarier than any new age game. To be honest the only game thats new that has made me feel edgy and anxious and actually made me jump was my first play through of Dead Space Its something about them, like why arnt new games with realistic graphics scarier? Anyone else agree?
Because most horror games these days are action games with horror trappings, old games due to low tech had to rely on pacing, atmosphere and build up to create a sense of horror unlike the ultra HD of modern horror where the new definition of horror is a bloodbath, if you want good modern horror think Russian/Eastern Europe
What about STALKER those games are pretty scary
Penumbra was pretty scary too. I didn't think Dead Space was scary tho'. I never even jumped.
Maybe when graphics were bad, people had more imagination about the monsters chasing them.
Or Penumbra. Fuckin' ninja'd.
Because, as the second post said, games now rely less and less on building up tension, which is what really makes a game scary, and instead focus on giving the enemies better visuals and enacting cheap hollywood pop-out thrills.
Also, old games are less forgiving, the enemies can be genuine threats. New games, you're always an unstoppable killing machine and don't really have a reason to be scared of your cannon fodder enemies.
What about STALKER those games are pretty scary
I refuse to go outside at night on that game.
I for one am scared of old graphics. The whole first Half life is way WAY scarier to me than havenholm.
Ravenholm was never scary though, it was hyped as being the scariest part in the series but really, the headcrabs in the ducts are scarier. Also second post posted exactly everything i was gonna say so nvm
Also, old games are less forgiving, the enemies can be genuine threats. Combine this and the fact in old days the games gave you very little ammo and forced you to run from the monsters if you wanted to save ammo for the boss. If there was a boss, sometimes it was just the game design fucking with you.
Penumbra. Nothing is worse than getting chased by a dead AND naked guy with empty eye sockets and rotten flesh, and not being able to do anything than just running. Also, you can hear a flap noice when he's running. ITS HIS PENIS
Because everything old sometimes feels unfamiliar, dusty, and eerie.

Though Overture was not really scary for me after I saw that my enemies are dogs and spiders, and an occasional wall worm. Though the 2nd one's naked zombies. You HAVE to run.
what do you guys think of that level in Thief Deadly Shadows... Shalebridge Cradle?
I mean seriously, new games keep on lacking on horror. Afraid of monsters DC, Its free, its a MOD of a MOD, i think it was just 2 people also. Its by far the scariest game i have EVER played, each time i play it im scared shitless even when nothing is going on im like freaking out. Then i play something like dead space, i mean it was going in a right direction but still lacked those long moments when NOTHING happens but your scared shitless. Then i go ahead and play system shock 2 (finally got it to work on XP) and every time i hear those DAMN MONKEYS I SHIT MY PANTS. Even the Robots scare the shit out of me. I havent played anything from the STALKER series, but is it worth downloading? I also gotta check out Penumbra
Argh, I remember the sewers in Blood 2. There was a monster which looked like a vagina and it jumped on you. T'was really startling.
I think the only modern games to get horror truly right are those ukrainian developed ones, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Cryostasis.
it's the sence of claustrophobia... and the lonelyness that comes with those old games. not to mention very few soundlayers at work which again enhances that isolated lonely feel... that's why old games are scary... fuck silent hill, Medievil is where it's at.
what do you guys think of that level in Thief Deadly Shadows... Shalebridge Cradle?
Whoever thought of making a scary level in a stealth game was a genius. Stealth games are usually intense to begin with, and if you throw in a little horror, it becomes a total nightmare.
System Shook 2 was bricks shitting and vein popper. Scariest game I've ever played.
Like posts before me. Back in the good ol' days, we could make what we want, put whatever we want in it and we had loads.. i mean shizzle loads of inspiration. I mean.. Today: Battlefield: Bad Company CoD: Modern Warfare Medal of honour Those are 3 games most of you know, But in basic, THEY ARE THE SAME, I mean that as concept, both modern war, both almost the same framework Old days: Thief Populous System Shock The secret of Monkey Island I had 10x more fun with Monkey Island and Deus Ex, Then all those 3 modern games together.. sorry for the rage. But if i had the chance to make a game, i would make 16-bit game. fuck what they say, Get back with the good games.

You just have to ignore the hype and look past the popular shovelware. Generally less-known companies/devs take risks in making games, and these risks sometimes pay off in an awesome way. Games like Deathspank, (Call it secret of diablo island if you will) STALKER and penumbra are all less widely known outside of their fanbases and all of them have garnered high acclaim from the people who have played them.
herm... you're comparing 3 war FPS to 4 totally different games :colbert:
herm... you're comparing 3 war FPS to 4 totally different games :colbert:
Call a game that you can compare to Deus Ex :colbert:
Also, old games are less forgiving, the enemies can be genuine threats. Older games were generally only harder because they were less functional and you couldn't just "load your game" all the time, and checkpoints were less heard of.
Call a game that you can compare to Deus Ex :colbert:
Sniper : Ghost warr- oh wait. But how can you compare Bad Company to Monkey Island ?

And they were perfectly functional, what are you talking about?
herm... you're comparing 3 war FPS to 4 totally different games :colbert:
yeah exactly horror games aren't very popular anymore
