The rise of the free-to-play western MMO hasn’t gone unnoticed at Blizzard, developers of World of Warcraft, the dominant western subscription MMO. Speaking to PC Gamer at their studios in Irvine, California, World of Warcraft’s lead designer, Tom Chilton, explained that “at some point, it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee.”
Full Article: Here Lots and lots and lots of new players if they do this.
And then quality will go wayyyyy down.
It's not going to happen until WoW begins to die.
Won't happen any time soon. Probably when playerbase go below 1 mil or something. Them greedy Activision guys.
Well Blizzard is making a new MMO.
They would get so many more players if it was for free, servial milions more.
If they do go F2P they should make a 1.12 server. People have been wanting one since Burning Crusade.
Don't they have hundred(s) of servers now that needs million(s) of dollars to operate and maintain? If so, I doubt WoW will ever be free. Also the quality would go way down and the probably would be zero content patches.
I don't want the game to be free, then when I level an alt all I will get is baddies.
Did you actually read the article, the quality would drop but not to the extent you are thinking. It said they would have an item market for special things that people can buy with their money. People go to crazy lengths to get special mounts, pets, and collectible novelty items.
If they do go F2P they should make a 1.12 server. Activision won't let them.
so so many nubs would be playing
It said they would have an item market for special things that people can buy with their money. People go to crazy lengths to get special mounts, pets, and collectible novelty items.
So like what cryptic is doing with star trek online. Only they have a sub fee
so so many nubs would be playing
Everyone has to start somewhere.
If it's bad enough having trolls and goons pop by on trial accounts, the community would dive bomb into hell so fast if it became free so everyone could join up.
If anything they should just lower it a little. Not make it absolutely free.
Hm. Regarding the item store, I do hope it'll only mean cosmetic items. I don't see the problem with more people joining the game though. When more people join, there'll always be "noobs", but there'll also be some awesome people in between. Whining about it doesn't make sense, as far as I can see. I think this will be good. It'll mean that having several accounts will be cheaper, for those of us who do, and you'll not have to spend so much money on a game. It'll probably also affect other MMOs too, and the sub fee is one of the things that always make me think twice before buying one.
Won't happen any time soon. Probably when playerbase go below 1 mil or something. I would probably start playing again
Wow community is already full of assholes.
Yeah but at least some of those assholes are good, last thing WoW needs is more people who are shit and shit to be around.
Yeah but at least some of those assholes are good, last thing WoW needs is more people who are shit and shit to be around.
This post doesn't even remotely make sense. You say people are assholes and yet you don't want WoW to be full of people who are shit to be around? Besides, everyone is shit when they start out. You don't automatically level up to level a billion. YOU were a newb once, and so was everyone else. You have to be new at the game because you just bought the game. There is literally no way to keep from being called a newb, or GOD FORBID, a noob. WoW gets new players every day. Are they shit? They pay for the game like everyone else. :colbert:

It would nice if they did this. I quit mainly because of this. Just a hard decision to fulfill because thats one way how they made money is all these accounts
A subscription isn't all that bad, 15$ a month is absolutely nothing not to mention the $ value per hour of game time is through the roof.
Just buy a card every 2 months, it's only 30 bucks
It's not that I disagree with the monthly fee being pretty decent - but I don't get you guys. You're saying that it isn't that bad - when it seems like it'l lbe possible to avoid it? I dunno, I think I'd rather skip the fee and still play if I could.
I feel like a ass hole saying this but I feel like the fee keeps out the "younger" players and keeps overpopulation down.
I feel like a ass hole saying this but I feel like the fee keeps out the "younger" players and keeps overpopulation down.
Definitely not. The "younger (read: spoiled)" players are still getting in. The people not getting in are the people who don't want to pay $15 a month. And trust me, there are two sides to this. Blizzard would only do this if it brings them some sort of gain, and not a gain in player population. There will be a catch. Also,
“We’re not spending a lot of time thinking about it. It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future.”
I say keep the fee. The feature I'd like to see free is transferring characters from server to server. So many times I want to play with friends and I can't. :(
