I want to get a copy of source film maker, but I hear it's illegal too do so. Is this true?
illegal
It's legal. If you had the TF2 beta legally, that is.
It's illegal.
But no one really cares and I doubt Valve cares.
It's illegal only if you weren't part of the TF2 beta.
It's illegal to get via torrents and such — as far as I know the only legal way was to get it in 2007 when Valve leaked it :p

It was a part of the beta, and Valve knew it was there.

because nobody ever considered looking in the old .gcf files and digging around to activate the source film maker. it was found back in january 2010.

ehhh not really found a little while before January 2010

january is when the majority of the people found out about source film maker.
Who cares if it's illegal? It's not like everyone who's ever had a PC ever hasn't torrented something illegally once or twice before, right?

Wrong.
No, people found it in 2007. I remember watching a SFM video dated with 2007.
It'll be legal when all the Meet the Team videos are released.

fixed.
It's legal. If you had the TF2 beta legally, that is.
So it's ilegal since you can't get that copy legally.

He means if you were in the beta from tf2, it wasn't just valve who played the beta some of the community got access to it.
