If you're familiar with forge, you should try Feed The Beast modpack. It has many, MANY mods to test out.

As for mods, I don't really use any other than Optifine & Rei's Minimap, check the minecraft forums.
I got: TooManyItems/Not enough items mod, whichever you want
Rei's Minimap, Backpack mod, Better Sprinting, Biomes O'Plenty, Timber mod, Balkon's weapons, Better Furnaces, bibliocraft.
I use these mods as they enhance and make minecraft a more enjoyable experience, they don't take away from the 'older' minecraft playstyle which I like. I never really got interested in FTB/Tekkit.
