It is being developed by Precursor Games, by all the original creators of Eternal Darkness. The game was announced only yesterday, and details are sparse, but I will update the OP as more are revealed. What we know now is that it is being initially released on Wii U and PC, there will be a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of $1.5 million, and that there will be "12 episodes." Some basic plot information was also teased:
When Detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest gang massacres in Louisiana state history, only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections will uncover the truth about the ‘Eternals’. Featuring an ensemble cast of heroes and villains, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States. Players will question the perception of reality as they try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events to progress through the adventure. Shadow of the Eternals will take players on a memorable journey throughout time; weaving historical fact with disturbing fiction to create an experience unlike any other. via: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/03/eternal-darkness-spiritual-successor-shadow-of-the-eternals-headed-to-wii-u-pc
Here is some info on the pilot episode:
Pilot Episode – A Dream Within A Dream The pilot episode of Shadow of the Eternals begins when detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest massacres in Louisiana state history at Pleasant View Hospital. eewwwwww episodes
eewwwwww episodes
Yeah i'm not a big fan of that either, but if any game can succesfully pull of episodic content I think it would be Eternal Darkness.
Please don't make it WiiU only.
After watching the IGN video, I am excited. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out but I'm assuming it'll be how the original was. I'm also excited that Sanity effects could happen in real time compared to how it used to be with entire rooms changing. Was also nice to hear that there are also going be outdoor environments rather than being stuck inside all the time.
Please don't make it WiiU only.
It's confirmed for PC. [editline]6th May 2013[/editline] http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/05/06/9-minutes-of-shadow-of-the-eternals Also, here is a 9 minute gameplay video with some commentary by Dennis Dyack.
As of 17:16 on the 8th of March, the Kickstarter is at 7.74% of it's goal, with $116,112 raised so far, 1947 backers, and 29 days to go.
They just posted this song from the game's soundtrack:
Today we've reached 8.57% of the goal, with $128,548 raised, 2155 backers, and 28 days left. On average, nearly $12,436 has been raised since the last milestone between 208 new backers. If the rate of increase stay the same it ain't gonna make it; here's hoping that the crowdfunding effort gets more publicity so we get more backers per day, 'cause this isn't something I wanna see fail.
1,500,000 is asking for way way way too much. Good luck cause it ain't happening.
Awww man. Apparently the cathedral level is only for demonstration purposes. I guess it really will be just a spiritual successor. What a shame.
We gotta seriously raise awareness about the project if we wanna see it made.
I'd be cautious about this thing, Silicon Knights have been doing some shady stuff with money lately, who knows what might happen. The game does look kinda interesting though.
I'd be cautious about this thing, Silicon Knights have been doing some shady stuff with money lately, who knows what might happen. The game does look kinda interesting though.
This isn't by Silicon Knights though.
This isn't by Silicon Knights though.
It pretty much is, Precursor games is just mostly made up from Silicon Knights guys. It kinda seems like they might have started Precursor games, "sold" all of their stuff from Silicon to them to get rid of some debts they had.
Turns out they now have a Kickstarter for their thing; it was launched just today and already has 131 backers at $8,112. Here's hoping that now it's on Kickstarter, it gets the exposure and support it needs. Also the PayPal Crowdfunding option on their site is just over 10%; things're looking up in this here grill. Then again, having two funding options does seem a bit strange...
yeah, as interested as i am in this project, i'm really skeptical about the direction it's heading funding wise episodes, TWO crowdfunding campaigns, i'm sure it'll be great but it is a bit weird how they're going about doing it.
We gotta seriously raise awareness about the project if we wanna see it made.
You're right, I will raise awareness. Copy paste ho Start by reading this. Yes it's Kotaku, but it's a good article. 1: Characters. Eternal Darkness is owned by Nintendo. The characters and likenesses are owned by Nintendo. http://www.precursorgames.com/shadowoftheeternals/cast/ Thankfully none of the characters look like Eternal Darkness characters, so they're safe there. Oh wait those last two look awfully familiar. "But Dennis isn't THAT stupid." You may be saying to yourself... to counter this I remind you that making the super alpha of Eternal Darkness 2 (which I'll cover in a minute) He used a modified version of Unreal Engine 3 without a license and actually tried to take the owners to court over owning it. They were then counter sued and lost everything. He really is that stupid. 2: The kickstarter is asking for 1.5 million dollars. You know that's actually realistic in a insane way if they make a big engrossing game. And then you realize that they're making this episodic, and planning 12 episodes, each with their own kickstarter. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. 3: This quote is a doozy, and was mentioned in a article awhile back.
"The farthest they got with it when I left SK was, literally, one two-level church interior," says one former employee. "It was really bad, as I recall. It took the side-team a long time to even get that far. Bad tech, combined with a team composed of people who had not shipped a title since Metal Gear really hurt that demo. Other than that, I can't explain why things went so poorly for them [except that] a lot of key people responsible for the original Eternal Darkness are long gone."
4: Kickstarter will make them keep to a schedule though! And then you realize that this isn't a kickstarter at all and something they build just to resemble kickstarter. Let's check out the terms though, those can't be to ba-
Payments made to Precursor Games, Inc. to back this project are strictly donations and are not consideration for any service or product. Donations will be used by Precursor Games, Inc. for various aspects of the development and production of Shadow of the Eternals (the “Game”) at their sole discretion.
Oohh... so your money could go to pizza parties. This sounds like something they've done before with publishers...
Precursor Games will accept donations immediately upon receipt; there is no minimum aggregate goal for funding.
There is no goal to tell if it's successful or not. Welp
A donation cannot be cancelled or returned once it has been completed, whether or not Precursor Games completes the Game or fulfils the specified reward.
This is a big one, apparently they have the right to deny you the reward you pay for and you can't do shit about it. That's swell.
YOU AGREE THAT ANY DISPUTE OR CLAIM ARISING OUT OF THIS AGREEMENT WILL BE RESOLVED ONLY ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS AND NOT IN A CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION OR AS A NAMED OR UNNAMED MEMBER IN A CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE LEGAL ACTION, UNLESS BOTH YOU AND Precursor Games AGREE OTHERWISE IN WRITING.
You can't sue them with a class action lawsuit unless they say it's okay. I'll just call this part 1, will end up posting more later but I find the whole thing interesting, what a scam :v: Edit: Actually one more, just for humors sake. Their FAQ downright lies to you.
What happens if you do not reach your goal *UPDATED*? Our financial goal is a flexible one. All contributions will go directly towards the development of this game and making it a reality. We are committed to making this game, however, if it becomes apparent that we cannot raise enough to develop this project then we will refund all pledges.
Refund all pledges huh?
Precursor Games will accept donations immediately upon receipt; there is no minimum aggregate goal for funding. A donation cannot be cancelled or returned once it has been completed, whether or not Precursor Games completes the Game or fulfils the specified reward. Precursor Games is under no obligation to complete the Game, or in the event completion is impossible, return any of the donations it has received.
Yeah fucking right lol
Hmmm, kinda concerning.
I blame dyack
don't ruin all my hopes and dreams :C
It's interesting how they're asking for funding (and seem pretty desperate for it, considering there's two crowdsourcing things going at once) at what seems to be a pretty late stage of development for the game.
Another thing is that they have yet to show us more gameplay beyond the walking around and interaction part; I don't think they've released representations of the combat or the sanity effects or the magic system yet, mechanics that were kinda core to Eternal Darkness. I hope they do show at least some magic and combat, though showing sanity effects would probably be spoilerish, since if we are shown the sanity effects we'd know that it's that sanity effect that people have talked about.
