ORION - MEDIA WEEK DAY 1 / WEEK 1 Another day, another update! We have been constantly improving on Beta 1.2 and having playtests regularly to ensure that the build is not only stable, but as much fun as it can possibly be. This last weekend we had invited various media outlets. We invited them to simply play the game and if they would like to write a hands-on preview we would supply some exclusive media for them. It appears most of them are writing hands on preview and it appears there was a hell of a lot of media that was taken from these events and there is too much of it so we are going to share it all with you. MEDIA OUTLETS INVITED: -PlanetHalfLife.com -FilePlanet -IGN -HLFallout -HalfLife2.net PODCAST 17 & ORION - BACK AGAIN We are going to have a game session with Podcast 17 later this week. As most of you remember, we had some early playtests with them back in December and November of 2009. They were one of the few that played Orion before it was originally released, played it after release, and will also have the opportunity to play the huge new patch and give their thoughts! We'll post more details about this as it gets closer. For now, enjoy the media: Keep your eye on HalfLife2.net (http://www.halflife2.net) tomorrow. They will be posting their hands on impressions with the latest build of Beta 1.2 We have a few things left on our to-do list for the public release of Beta 1.2 - but don't fear - we are extremely close. Keep your eye on this page for all things Orion!
what's the point of having closed beta sessions? i'm pretty sure that's the reason so little people played this game for a decent amount of time during the time you released it publicly
I don't get the point of making 6 threads, but ok. Mod looks great; had a chance to play it a little bit. Pretty fun
We do closed beta sessions (200-300 people) to do better stress testings and gameplay balancing. Once we post the changelog, you'll notice our patches are much much bigger compared to other games as they are huge with amount of tweaks that go in as well as content. It's sort of a package of DLC and an upgrade patch. Once it's in a state of quality we are happy with, we release to a much larger crowd (believe we are at 20,000+ downloads for Beta 1.0).
I remember this
Halo: Source?

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AND POSTED BY AND FROM HALFLIFE2.NET http://www.halflife2.net/2010/05/13/orion-1-2-hands-on-preview/ ( HTTP://WWW.HALFLIFE2.NET ) ORION BETA 1.2 - HANDS-ON IMPRESSIONS - HALFLIFE2.NET Recently Halflife2.net had the pleasure of play testing the latest beta of Orion, known as version 1.2. For those not in the know, Orion is a total conversion deathmatch and capture the flag mod for Half Life 2 with more modes in the pipeline. There are currently 3 classes right now, with 5 planned. I spent a lot of my time playing as both the Support and Assault class. The Assault class gives you two separate machine guns and a jet pack, while the support class includes a single machine gun, a semi automatic shotgun and a magnum. The sniper class includes the standard sniper rifle with the traditional secondary weapons. With the release of 1.2 come some very cool changes and additions to the mod. New additions that feature in the beta are 4 new maps which may turn out to be major fan favorites. First on the list is Myst, a capture the flag map set in a jungle environment, with some really spiffy water effects. A lot of the fighting takes place out in the open, with plenty of opportunities for the assault class to use the jetpack to their advantage. Next on the list is Snowdrift, a capture the flag map largely based in a snowy train yard with two opposing bunkers. While it doesn’t have quite as much open battlefield as Myst it is still has a pretty large scope to it. I didn’t get to play very much of Snowdrift, which was a little disappointing, as it was one of the most visually interesting maps. Another new map added was Shadow. Shadow takes on more of a vertical element to it; there are multiple levels from which you can wage war, it’s in a canyon area with routes carved into the rocky terrain. Last on the list is Catchment, a remake of a map that has been in Orion for quite some time. Catchment is easily one of my favorite maps from the beta. The close quarter’s assaults that take place in the narrow hallways really add a unique play style not found in the larger maps. Along with all the maps come some specific class and gameplay updates. The Sniper now has the previously hinted at cloaking ability, which gives him a Predator-like invisibility. You can move with the cloak still activated, and it will slowly drain the meter. It’s pretty devastating once you get the hang of it, and its rather fun sneaking up on your enemies. On top of all that they have added a ton of performance savers and optimizations to make the game run relatively smooth and bug free. Now, with all of that said there are some minor problems that I feel weighed down Orion. One point is the hacking; you don’t get very much on screen representation while hacking and it feels like a minor feature. You don’t really feel the full effect of hacking has on a specific area, and it could probably be addressed easily. With the imminent release of the new beta I’m sure it will be building up a fair bit of press and attention, which I wholeheartedly feel it deserves. The attention to detail and how well balanced it is really shows how much work Praz and his team put in is outstanding. With the right audience and attention Orion could really take off and get the attention is deserves. Orion 1.2 will be available for public download in the near future, with a guarantee of no pesky server crashing issues! Keep an eye out on our weekly mod round-up article to download version 1.2 or visit the Orion website. Overrated trash. The only thing that pulls people into the mod is the looks. When it's just another bland deathmatch mod.
played it for a single day when it was first released publicly and there was some douchebag with the assault rifle one-shotting everybody from like half the map away.
Overrated trash. The only thing that pulls people into the mod is the looks. When it's just another bland deathmatch mod.
Not sure how good looking a game running on a 2004 engine can be - but whatever you say!

ORION BETA 1.2 - RELEASE ANNOUNCED! We have been working endlessly on the Beta 1.2 update for the Orion Source Multiplayer Beta. We appreciate you guys being patient for the last few months, but we promise you it is worth the wait. Beta 1.2 offers a much more stable and proper build of the game. It has been completely optimized from the ground up and runs 100x smoother than Beta 1.0 and 1.1. We've gone back and optimized all of the original maps as well as touched them up here and there. Not only this, but we are adding 5 brand new maps that will be available in Beta 1.2! We've also refined some of the GUI as well as added brand new special effects and audio effects. We are sure you guys will notice these right away. Orion Beta 1.2 is roughly 95% custom content now (the file size says that all), besides a few things here and there such as the death sounds from HL2 and other small things like that. They said depending on the community for Beta 1.2, they'll put it on Steam and have all patches and updates auto-download through there software. This would also allow us the ability to add achievements and plenty of other cool features to the game. We really want to make this a reality not only for our selves - but to better Orion for you guys as well and give you one hell of a game! So spread the word, tell all your friends, make your friends play - do whatever! If you don't, that's fine - we hope you enjoy Beta 1.2 and we are going to be unleashing more details about file size, new information on the new maps (and the secret 5th map!), game server information as well as regular dates in the week where you can play with us developers! [editline]04:28PM[/editline] Need an admin to change the Thread Title to "Orion: Source Multiplayer Beta"

Wait a minute, june 14th? Was this the big announcement? :tinfoil: :iiam:

Deathmatch mods are dumb
Praz you put a great load of work into it and you should do what you think is right. However the people do have some point, there are hundreds of deathmatch mods and you need to incorporate something which makes this mod stand out. Something which can make it worthy for steamworks.

Better to start with a great foundation of the game (great gunplay, great player movement, enforcing team work, and a stable build) and build it out like a cake rather than include everything in one large sloppy mess and going through that and tinkering it. It's a Beta. It's like a plant. Watch it grow. (Compare early Counter-Strike betas to the official release / Source release).
the animations suck.

People want to rambo it out because they feel too safe.Games like Resistance and Liberation successfully incorporates teamwork because it shows no mercy. You play blind; no HUD or indicator of team mates. Without HUD or a secure sense of team mates around you, people are forced to use voice chat and communicate with each other. Hopefully you can make something similar.
Ugh, I'm getting sick of the default player weapon-holding animations. Other than that it looks pretty nice.
Reminds me of Neotokyo. I miss that mod :(
This mod was denied Steamworks access. haha even valve knows a bland mod when they see one
