GTA IV - Is there a way to tell when I'm recording something?

It's very frustrating when I go into the movie editor and the clips I get are nothing of what I wanted to record. Is there a mod or something that tells me when it's recording and what it's recording?
The only thing I can think of is to get fraps or some other out of game recording software.
F2 doesn't start / stop recording it captures your last 30 seconds of gameplay from the point you pressed F2 as a script that you can edit with the video editor and then export as a video.
Oh, that might actually help then. Can I extend the 35 seconds by any mods/fucking with files?
30 seconds? For me it captures around a minute and fifteen seconds.
Isn't that called Flashback Recording?
The recorder records as much raw data as your computer can handle or something like that. So better comp= more recording time.
Wy didn't they just have an On/Off button?

Because it's good for things like "JESUS CHRIST DID YOU JUST FUCKING SEE THAT /F2"

The clips are pretty big, leaving it running for a length of time would eat up space, and im sure you're not particularly interested in every second of that 15 minute slab of gameplay. Awesome moments in GTA seldom need more than a minutes worth of footage anyway.
What if I'm not recording an awesome moment. What if I'm recording a part of a machinima where a disgraced cop goes on the run for the murderer who killed his family 6 years ago? What then, huh?

Fraps.
Don't even suggest Fraps. It's a good tool for recording gameplay, but not using the movie maker. Not even close.
Well I guess I can only record about 35 seconds of gameplay then. Shit sucks.
You do 35 seconds of the machinima at a time. Or get someone with a better PC to record.

Except I have 6 gigs of ram, an i7-920, and a gtx 480 and I only get ~25 seconds every clip.

I have 4 gigs of ram and a quad core and I usually get around 1 minute. Sometimes more.
