Hey, i am wondering what the best Total War game in the series is, and do they have any kind of 'Free-mode' per-say where you don't have to follow the story?
Thanks.
Also is the multiplayer good?
What a coincidence. I bought Rome : Total War today with both expansions for about 4 pound.
If you like the Medieval setting, I would go for Medieval Total War 2.
There is a skirmish mode where you can picks troops, pick if you want to defend settlements or not, so many options.
I haven't played the multiplayer yet, but I'm sure the community is still alive.

Is the Rome one fun? I was thinking about that one.
There's no real story per say but if you mean the campaign in general, yeah you can either do quick battles(just click the button it sets everything up randomly), custom battles(you can set everything up yourself), or historical battles(basically, you reenact famous battles).
The multiplayer for all of the games are quite good and my personal favorite game out of them all is Medieval II... just be sure to grab the Kingdoms expansion as well since it adds a TON of stuff including a campaign in which you can conquer the Americas.
Rome Total War is also extremely good and preferable if your computer isn't that great.
Hey guys, update, im getting Rome, it's pretty cheap on steam too so il go for it.

P.S ITT: We now talk about Total War games.
R:TW is a classic
R:TW rocks. I still kinda like it more then the revolutionary war era one...
E:TW was a big letdown. N:TW was better, although I miss the grand scale.
Despite their flaws though, I have to consider these 2 the best in the series because of the multiplayer grand campaign. It makes so much difference to have a real person in there, not just bumbling around with AI as has always been the mainstay of the series.
Yeah, guys, i have the game running, i selected campaign and i have no idea what to do.
Listen to the advisors and do the tutorial, it can be daunting to new comers but you'll get used to it.
plus, lord of the rings total war
I wish they made a wh40k total war.

Especially on harder difficulties, where it becomes a grief simulator:
"YOUR GOING INTO DEBT" "I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO, FINE, I'LL JUST INCREASE TAXES" *increases taxes* "TWO OF YOUR SETTLEMENTS HAVE REVOLTED" "WHAT?! WHY?! I NEEDED THOSE, THEY HAD PLENTY OF FOOD AND MINERALS, WHY WOULD THEY REVOLT?" BARBARIANS ARE ATTACKING YOUR OUTPOSTS" "WHAT?!?! JESUS, I DONT HAVE ENOUGH MEN TO HANDLE THE BARBARIANS AND THE REVOLTS" "THE ATHENIANS HAVE ATTACKED ONE OF YOUR SEA PORTS" "...." *shuts off game*
