You could delete it
Defrag, or, if that doesn't work, delete it and verify your game cache.
Close steam, delete the file, start steam again.
When you start a Source game it will re-download it.
How the hell did you manage to do that?
How the fuck did it become as big as 55.5GB
That is the normal size if you have many source games.

I don't even think the cumulative sum of all Source game's GCF size even reaches 55 GB.

Only a base source engine 2.gcf.
I used to have this but I deleted it and that's it, its gone and all of my games still work as they should.
Use GCFScape see what the hells in that hog of a file.
Jesus christ, I don't even have that much memory wasted on my external hard-drive which holds all my old games and porn collection. I'd really, really like to know what the hell is taking up so much space.

Base source shared.gcf is old. It's now named source engine and is used by Lost Coast and Half-Life: Source.
