I heard about steam when I was reading a twitter post about the game Team Fortress 2 and was stupid enough to download the dedicated server pack thinking I was going to get it. Oh boy I was dumb. So how did you find out about it?
Random Searching? I was tired of using discs all the time, so I put my Half Life/2 games on Steam and then started getting more.
Some time in like 2003 or 2004 when it was announced.
bought portal from retail, installed steam, found out orange box is 70 less dollars on steam than in stores. bought orange box and then realised i wasted 20 dollars on a retail portal. wel not really, as i made me find out about steam, and Valve too.
Bought Episode 1 in liiike, 2006 and had to install it. I said to myself I'm never gonna use it other than to play Ep1
One of my friends showed me steam.
Friends who had internet before I did.

Dad gave me his account that had several tames already installed
I had to when i installed half life 2 back in 04/05.
When I finally got the internet+decent computer combo, the first thing I did was buy Half Life 2. I waited from, ~2,000 when I first played HL1, until the end of 2006 when I finally got the computer, only to find out you can't buy HL2 from ebay, thanks to steam. I kept my account for a while, and finally decided to see what other games were out there. First thing I got was the GMOD and CSS combo. Then the OB came out, and I got HL2 for real.
Got it with Half-life 2 / Counter strike.
Friend showed me the trailer to Portal. Then I started saving up for a PC, then I bought the orange box. Good times.
My friends were playing Garry's mod and wanted me to join them
people who didn't get steam back in 2003 are a bunch of noobs.
Got a graphics card (Radeon x800 pro) that came with the valve complete pack. Hard to believe that was almost 7 years ago.
When I installed Half-Life 2.

Thought I'd get Counter-Strike Source for free and meet fps_doug :v:
When I found out I had to register my old HL1 game on Steam in order to play online. That was back in 05, I think.
Half Life 2.
YouTube back in 2007. Was more of a console gamer before hand.
When I came across a cool looking game called Audiosurf and had to download Steam in order to play the demo.
When i installed Counter-strike:source for the first time back in '06, i noticed that you needed a Steam account and i thought meh. I installed it and came across the store and the community. And now i'm here.
It installed when I tried to install HL2 and CSS and everything on my PC.
Sometime in '03 when I was looking up to see what Valve was doing.
I was looking for a online edition to the movies game. And i saw steam as the first result. When i clicked it it made me download the client and then i bought the movies game from there.
