We've got a Torchlight thread about 4 pages back and I'll bet my powdered bottom that we have a Diablo 2 one also. Anyway, there has been a lot of Torchlight vs Diablo 2 threads 'round the net and I decided to bring one over here. If you aren't aware of what Torchlight or (I pray to god not) Diablo 2 is, then see the following links.

Anyway, I would like to know where you guys stand on this. Are you faithful to ye' olde Diablo 2 or this brand new Torchlight?
Post your thoughts.
Now then here are my offical thoughts:
These come from experience from about 6 hours in the demo of Torchlight and about 6 more hours of browsing the 'net about it. And something like 26 hours of straight gameplay in Diablo 2 LoD. (I stayed up all day and night with a friend, both of us on netbooks playing Diablo 2 LoD, we got through most of the first act, keep in mind we were on a much harder difficulty. And we sucked) So anyway, I think Torchlight did pretty much everything better than Diablo 2. The only thing I think Diablo 2 surpassed Torchlight at was the Story & Main Story Quests. I just loved the Act system and looking at those great big squares that told me my main objective for that section of the Act. And killing The Smith. That was fun too. Especially my friend and I were all "Yeah he's probably really slow, let's take 'em!" Then got our asses killed about 3 times and chased around a bunch of Anvils by a Troll on steroids. What I also loved about Diablo 2 was the fact that the world was so much bigger than Torchlight's. Torchlight had a semi-large town and two dungeons (The story one and the endless one). This (as i've read) worked very well and everyone loved it except those hardcore Diablo 2 fans who wouldn't take a bite out of anything that wasn't well... Diablo 2. Yeah. Thats it.
So yeah. Post your thoughts.
Cheers.
Diablo 2, anyone who thinks otherwise can kill themselves.
Diablo 2 gets all screwy with the textures and goes all green and blue and shit when I play it.
I'll stick with Torchlight.
i'll hold my opinions for torchlight 2 so it can even compare with multiplayer
Diablo has far more content than torchlight, a little less grind like too, my vote is for Diablo. And add a poll
Diablo 2, bar none. Torchlight got boring for me personally quite fast.

what
diablo 2 has more grinding by far

How? I see no Poll button in Advanced or Simple edit mode.
I really enjoy Torchlight. Great graphics and the addictive item collecting RPGs never get old.

What?
I agree with you that the Diablo 2 world is more expansive, but to say that there's more grinding in Torchlight is like saying that Freddy Krueger is nicer than my mother and gives out teddy bears.
Diablo 2 has way more grinding. Really.

This, pretty much.
I personally like Torchlight better, but it's not really my favorite kind of game anyways.
Oh, there's also the fact that, when they came out, I'm assuming Diablo 2 was 50-60 dollars or whatever, and Torchlight was 20, Just a thought.

that doesn't really matter because you can get Diablo 2 and LoD for like ten bucks.
Torchlight has had some awesome sales on Steam though, so I expect Torchlight 2 will have similar sales.

That is a stupid and completely irrelevant fact that has no place in this comparison.
Diablo's story is significantly better, hell Torchlight doesn't even compare, Diablo.

It's fourty dollars.
That is a stupid and completely irrelevant fact that has no place in this comparison.
No, it's not.
Also, why are you comparing Diablo II with Torchlight? I thought that it was more similar to the first game.

It only does that to me when I hit the windows key. Also diablo 2 is like 12 years old.
They both have something the other doesn't, Diablo 2 just has more somethings than Torchlight
It only does that to me when I hit the windows key. Also diablo 2 is like 12 years old.
my copies tell me it's 11 years old, Diablo II itself being released in 1999, and the expansion 2000. also "Stunning 800x600 graphics!"
I don't know if it's nostalgia, but I enjoyed Diablo 2 more than Torchlight. Leveling up and killing things with my friends is a really cool experience I miss doing. Torchlight's cool for being easy to mod and fixing some of the things I found annoying in D2, but lack of multiplayer is something that disappointed me.
Part of the team that worked on Diablo II made Torchlight.

Both are addicting, I'm not hardcore, just like plain casual fun and shit.
Also, Torchlight got boring really quick for me. There is just constant grinding and grinding and more grinding. Very minimal and forgetful rewards.
800x600 is pretty normal for 1999.
Diablo 2 + LoD, imitations just can't replace the original.
Also I don't know about you guys, but I'm enjoying D2 in 1280x1040.
Torchlight for the win.
Fuck it, Torchlight. Even without multiplayer.
Not that diablo 2 isn't good, I just happened to like Torchlight alot.
I would have liked Torchlight a lot more if it had MP. Looking at the times, though, I like it better. Easier on the eyes, and smoother playing. It's dumb to love a classic just for the sake of it being a classic.

Fuckin' THIS ^
I hate how some people are so stuck-in-the-mud about diablo. It is good, but jeeze.
That said, I expect Diablo 3 to beat the utter crap out of Torchlight.
