• Overhyped : The Last of Us

I've been watching someone play The Last Of Us for hours now, but I still don't get how this game got so hyped up. Its basically a linear shoot-em-up, with bland stories. Don't even get me started on gameplay, its basically just a clone of Uncharted. It brings nothing new or wondrous, gameplay and story-wise. At first, I really wanted me to be to be wrong, and tried to convince myself that the game will get better, but when I started to fall asleep in 10 minutes after he plays, something must be wrong. Its not my intention to whine here, its just that if these kind of games are the ones who got hyped up the most, I'm worried for better games that didnt get much attention will get buried under all the ruckus. It's sad to see a good game got cancelled, or a game company closed down even after they produced a good game just because they dont get much attention (examples: Clover studio's Okami, Irem's Steambot Chronicles). We'll be missing out big time.
By watch, do you mean let's plays on youtube or at someone's house watch?
Something like that. Since games are expensive nowdays. Wasted money on several overhyped games - FF13, Uncharted that makes me sleepy in the first 10 minutes. Great that they are doing a lot of lets plays
Playing the game is a completely different experience than watching let's plays on Youtube.
Yeah, you can't meaningfully call a game boring after watching someone else play it. That doesn't make sense. Why didn't you post this in the game's thread?
Making an conclusion based on watching someone ELSE play? What kind of a fucking moron......

I've been playing my share of games since 2 decades ago, so i can discerned their qualities, although not perfectly. I understand that a lot of people like pretty-looking games like these, and its a good thing that they can be entertained by that. Its just worrying/sad to see other games got obscured by these overhyped games, that was made mainly to cash in on popular trend. Well, I dont have much to say about this lol. gonna get a lot of hate for this lol
Making an conclusion based on watching someone ELSE play? What kind of a fucking moron......
How is that any different than people watching gameplay videos for a new game that just came out and deciding whether or not to buy it based on the videos. That's how most people decide is it not? Or by playing a demo.. But I know if I can tell if a game is good or not by watching gameplay so I'll have to disagree with you.

Seems like one of those games you have to play for a better experience. Wait, that's kind of like all of them

Sometimes, games are better judged by playing them, raher than wathing lets plays. This is especially true for games that have strong/original/unique gameplay, and not so much on graphics. But, as for games that depends on graphics for its charm, but mediocre gameplay such as TLOU, I don't think having first impression based on the videos are very misleading
IMHO The only "problem" with the game is that is linear , for that type of game should be a bit more sandbox , but on other hand , it deserves game of the year

What makes The Last of Us good is the strength of its characters. If you don't play and build a meaningful relationship with those characters then of course it'll look boring. I'm sure there are people who truly did not like The Last of Us after playing, but so far every person I've talked to that's thought of it as a bad game made no attempt to watch the cutscenes or listen to the in-game conversations. It's the equivalent of texting for 3/4 of a Tarantino movie and then whining about how it's so boring.
yeah maybe so. like the walking dead and heavy rain. I really hope such a good-looking games would be developed with more original gameplay lol. I can't say that the story is very original either. Maybe its because I'm not playing it, so i didnt develop emotional attachment to the characters lol. But its kind of sad to see that million dollars development money went to create a clone.

It is understandable why you don't like the game, as obviously not everyone will enjoy this game, but god damn, you haven't even experienced it for yourself.
A clone of what exactly? I didn't see it copying anything really.
His example would probably be The Walking Dead, which somewhat makes sense.
His example would probably be The Walking Dead, which somewhat makes sense.
If he is talking about focusing in history , i agree , but gameplay is totaly different

They open a lot of doors that a simple controller or keyboard wouldn't be able to handle.
As someone who played the whole thing all I can say is this thread is bull shit; you couldn't be more wrong. The game was far from over-hyped. It got a bit of attention near the end from the reviews but that's all the hype I ever heard from this game since it got announced, and those reviews by the way, are well fucking deserved if you don't consider a 10/10 as "the perfect game". And to say the gameplay is a replica of Uncharted? What a fucking laugh. Sure the fundamental 3rd person cover stuff might be there, but the game plays nothing like Uncharted at all - in fact playing it like Uncharted will probably get you killed fast assuming you're not at the first couple of hours into the game. It's a game. Not a film. A game is supposed to be played, not watched.
Its basically a linear shoot-em-up
I don't think that word means what you think it means.

The abundance of games nowdays might make coming up with original ideas a little bit difficult, but sometimes the companies themselves didnt want to explore new ideas, because they wanted to stick with what proven to sell. Some developers also complained about this, like Keiji Inafune.
I Agree with you , kinect and playstation eye can bring some cool stuff , but i've only seen horrible games for them
Because there is little reason to do anything with them. Not every user has them so either you make a game that grows vastly simpler without it or you make a game that no one but kinect/eye owners can use, and they bomb pretty damn bad, so its not worth it to even try.
You're not going to see what everyone's ranting and raving over unless you play the thing yourself. There's so many small conversations and moments that I've hear let's plays are missing out on anyway, a lot of story building, emotional stuff. Naughty Dog created a game that is perfect with a linear story. The levels are perhaps a bit too guided and linear in some parts, but perfectly open in other areas, so I can see where people wanted a sandbox game. But the TLOU tells the story of a human being making human decisions. And when you first read that, it may sound bland, but it's done in a way that I have never seen in a video game, at least not to the degree that Naughty Dog pulled it off. The characters have realistic emotions and what not, to the point that you can become attached to them and question their actions, even facial expressions. When I finished the game I sat through the credits analyzing the decisions made through the game and the characters personalities, much like one would do in a book or movie. I can honestly say I haven't done that in a game for a long time. Maybe a bit in Heavy Rain, but not quite like I did in this. I'm not saying the game is profoundly deep or anything bullshitty like that. It's quite the opposite really, it's a story of humans making hard, emotional decisions and fighting for their lives, and that's the beauty of it.
