Pikmin is an RTS series, focusing on directing a horde of plant-like creatures called Pikmin, which are used to collect items, destroy obstacles, and fight giant monsters. The Pikmin games all focus on exploring an unknown planet (Earth, sometime after the extinction of the human race), controlling a crowd of Pikmin creatures. Pikmin are intelligent multi-colored plant-animal hybrids that willingly follow the orders of their leader, Captain Olimar,, a tiny alien from the planet Hocotate. Pikmin are directed to perform a number of tasks, such as fighting monsters and retrieving objects. Because individual Pikmin are small and weak against most predators, it is the responsibility of the player to direct the Pikmin away from hazards and launch attacks that quickly put enemies into submission. Game time is divided into single days, in which the player is encouraged to accomplish as much as possible before sunset. There are a total of 2 in the series currently released, with a third game coming out soon.

Pikmin (2001/2009, Gamecube/Wii)
In Pikmin, the main character is Captain Olimar, a tiny extraterrestrial from the planet Hocotate. The story starts when Olimar is taking an intergalactic vacation in outer space. However, during his flight, a comet hits his spaceship, the S.S. Dolphin, which is then pulled into the gravity field of an uncharted planet. Parts of the spaceship fall off as it plummets to the ground and crashes.
When he regains consciousness, Olimar finds out that the planet's atmosphere contains high levels of oxygen- an element deadly to his people- and he can stay on the planet for only 30 days before his life support system stops functioning. Olimar must retrieve many of the spaceship parts so he can rebuild his spaceship and return to Hocotate. Although Olimar initially states in his journal entries that he needs all 30 parts, as the game moves on it is hinted at that some parts might not be actually necessary to lift off, and, indeed, one can win the game without said parts.
To help Olimar are indigenous creatures called Pikmin, which are nearly extinct and unable to survive in the environment without his leadership when he arrives. As this element of symbiosis develops, Olimar discovers parts of his ship and travels across the Pikmin Planet. The game has three endings depending upon how successful the player was in recovering the ship parts.
There are only 3 types of Pikmin in this game: Red (Invulnerable to fire & strongest attack), Blue (Invulnerable to water) and Yellow (Invulnerable to electricity, can be thrown high and can pick up bomb rocks)

Pikmin 2 (2004/2009, Gamecube/Wii)
After escaping the distant planet in the first game, Captain Olimar returns to his home planet Hocotate to learn that the company he works for, Hocotate Freight, is in severe debt, after a payload of golden carrots was supposedly stolen. Because of this debt, the company was forced to sell everything, including Olimar's ship. Shocked, Olimar drops the bottle cap that he brought back from the planet. The nearby Hocotate Ship determines that the bottle cap Olimar retrieved from the distant planet has a considerable value of 100 pokos. The company president, hearing this, decides to send Olimar and his co-worker Louie to seek out the planet where they quickly reunite with the Pikmin creatures, who help in scavenging the treasures, in order to pay off the debt.
There is a vast difference between this game and the first one. First of all, there is no time limit of 30 days anymore (a big plus in my book), you guide around two characters instead of one (meaning you can split up your group in order to be more efficient or complete tasks that require you to do this.) You're also accompanied by the Hocotate Ship's artificial intelligence, which gives you hints and input (as well as annoying tutorials over and over again, or snarky remarks whenever you bring it a dead body.) In addition to exploring the surface of each locale, there are underground caves scattered throughout the landscape in which you, your Pikmin horde, and the ship's AI can enter. Caves contain multiple treasures and enemies spread across multiple sub-levels. While inside a cave, time does not pass on the surface due to a time warp caused by a strong geomagnetic field, allowing the player to explore for an indefinite period of time before sunset. However, the Pikmin Onions do not follow, meaning that the player can only utilize the Pikmin brought with him. Caves are also home to larger, stronger enemies that serve as the game's bosses, which upon defeat often award treasures that bestow new abilities to the player characters.
There are 2 new Pikmin types brought in this time around: White (Run faster than other types & are immune to poison, can also poison enemies dealing a large amount of damage when eaten, as well as being able to see treasures buried under the ground) and Purple (Not immune to any hazards and are also the slowest moving, but count a lot more when carrying treasures & deal a ton of damage when thrown onto an enemy directly.)
There has also been added in a Piklopedia/Treasure Hoard, a sort of Wikipedia containing numerous entries about the wildlife/treasures you have come across/collected in your adventures. Worth quite the read if you want some delicious lore. There is also a versus mode and a challenge mode. The versus mode has you fight a friend of your choice in split screen, playing a sort of CTF gamemode utilizing marbles. The challenge mode can be played either solo or cooperatively, taking place in various caves. The objective is to locate a Key treasure, used to open access to the next sub-level, within the specified time limit. The player completes the level upon finding the exit out of the cave, and is scored based on the treasures collected, the number of Pikmin surviving upon exit, and the time taken to complete the level.

Pikmin 3 (NA - August 4th, EU - July 26th, Wii U)
The planet of Koppai is facing an inevitable doomsday due to a lack of sustenance. Because of this, a Captain named Charlie, a scientist named Brittany, and a boy named Alph, have departed their homeworld in search of a reliable food source.
Due to an accident, the trio crash lands on a familiar planet, where they meet the Pikmin creatures. After a reunion, Brittany calculates the planet is covered with fruit. However, because the fruit are gigantic compared to them, the 3 explorers must rely on the Pikmin to help them retreive the gargantuan fruit and take them to their ship, which will convert the fruit into various types of juices for them to use as food, while the seeds are stored to be brought back to Koppai in hopes of ending the food crisis.
Pikmin 3 will give a complete overhaul to the series' battle mechanics; rather than simply throwing Pikmin at targets, the player must analyze a target and determine exactly how it should be brought down. For example, some walls will be more easily broken if Pikmin attack them from the top and work their way down, and some enemies may react differently if attacked in sensitive areas, such as their eyes.
Pikmin 3's graphical design will be much more realistic thanks to the enhanced resolution and processing power of the Wii U console, and will also sport a slight exaggeration to character designs. Unlike in the past games, the Pikmin will be slightly larger and each one is capable of moving individually, making them stand out more and making them seem more "alive".
Basic gameplay will retain most of its recognizable features from past games; the game revolves around the player controlling an army of up to 100 various Pikmin, which can be directed to perform a variety of tasks to harvest salvagables. In this game, the players must harvest fruit for use as food to help their starving homeworld.
In addition to these, a new action can now be performed by captains, which will cause them and their Pikmin swarm to quickly drop and roll side-to-side, which can be used to quickly move out of the way of a stampeding creature. Captains will also be able to throw one another like Pikmin. It is unknown if Olimar and Louie will be referenced at all.
There are two other modes to play besides the campaign: Mission and Bingo Battle. Mission has you run around on a level that you select, trying to collect as much treasure, fruit etc. as possible within an allotted time (~7-10 min.) to score as much Pokos as possible in the end. Bingo battle has you play as either Alph or Olimar, with a 4x4 bingo card on the lower portion of each player's view, containing various objects in the level, ranging from enemies to fruits to treasures. The player that collects all of the objects in a row will win, similar to bingo.
There are currently 2 new known Pikmin: Rock Pikmin and Winged Pikmin.
Rock Pikmin appear to be able to carry the same normal capacity as any other Pikmin. They carry objects faster than the average Pikmin due to their strength. Despite their increased strength, they have a setback; Rock Pikmin cannot latch onto their targets, as they bounce off and roll back. Instead, if left occupied, they will repeatedly attack enemies and obstacles by charging headlong into them. Rock Pikmin also occasionally unleash additional damage to targets they hit by causing a "thump". Which can stun an enemy for a brief second. This also can stop an enemy from performing an attack. Rock Pikmin cannot be crushed by enemies or projectiles. When they have been hit by a heavy object, Rock Pikmin will stay buried in the ground and eventually pull themselves out once the object is removed. They can get eaten by small enemies like Dwarf Red Bulborbs and Dwarf Bulbears but it is believed that it will take longer for these enemies to grab one in their mouth then other types of Pikmin.
Winged Pikmin are capable of flight, and are always flying in the air. They can carry items above the ground and also appear to be able to automatically dodge falling objects. Winged Pikmin are small and fast, allowing them to keep up with the captains at a steady pace. Due to their constant airborne status, they can follow captains even if they're walking in an area inaccessible to most Pikmin types, such as a small pond or other body of water. It is currently unknown if there will be any way to cause Winged Pikmin to become grounded temporarily. Due to their constant flying, they must be called by holding the whistle button for slightly longer than normal, which will summon a cylindrical beam of light that will call the Winged Pikmin.

So uh, did Olimar and the President forget about that whole Louie incident at the end of Pikmin 2? You know, when Louie [sp]supposedly takes over the Titan Dweevil's brain and tries to kill them?[/sp]

So excited for Pikmin 3! I'll be honest and admitI'm not so sure on how I feel with this food system. I guess I'll have to wait and see.
Pumped for the game, but behind on the knowledge. We'll be collecting fruit instead of parts this time?
Yep
The best game about exploiting animals for your own personal gain since Pokemon.

Oh what the hell
Did it JUST get unlocked for blues or what? I'm so used to it being Gold only
Something about that Onion in pikmin 3 looks off. It looks more like it was an artificially made one, perhaps based off of Olimars description of it, but made to hold multiple types of pikmin at once.
Pikmin 3 is one of the sole reasons I want a Wii U.

That's pretty much a given at this point, there seem to be bolts in it and everything, and in every shot it shows only colors of pikmin you have with you, AND there's only one spot for pikmin to land onions anyway in all the maps shown.
