I simply don't get it... Soo every one has been talking about half life 2 and how amazing it was since the very first day it cam out. I ignored all of the commotion for a little while but then i suddenly felt the need to find out for myself what's so good about this game. And since i had the orange box purchased a long while ago nothing prevented me to do so. I launched the game played for 5 hours and i didn't get it. Several day's later i played it again. Still didn't get it. Launched and played the game today for several hour's and i still don't get it what's so amazing in this game! Sure it looks beautiful and it has a decent physics engine. But rly? Dare i say it, but when i was playing the game it got really repetitive. All you're doing is going from point A to Point B throwout the whole game. I didn't find the puzzles fun, i found them as a pathetic attempt to make the game less repetitive. And the least fun sequences were the one's where you travel by car, boat etc. And these sequences take up 40% of the whole game. Am i the only one who thinks this way? But hey, it's just my opinion, i can be wrong.
You didnt play it right.
You're just playing it 6 years late, it was amazing back then. Now it's a mediocre game compared to other stuff out there. The story is still awesome, though.
You played it too late, compared to other games from when it was released HL2 dominated. By the way, you should have played HL1 first.
granted the game is 6 years old but isn't the object of every game to get from point A to B
It was fantastic in 2004. It's really not aged well to be completely honest.
First, HL2 is pretty old and gaming has developed a lot since HL2 was released. In my humble opinion, HL2 has a great story, it's fun to play and not too challenging. It's a great game in overall. I think you played it wrong or simply can't enjoy it because it's not your kind of game. Remember that this is my opinion :colbert:
You're just playing it 4 years late, it was amazing back then. Now it's a mediocre game compared to other stuff out there. The story is still awesome, though.
I don't expect Episode 3 to be any different. It will run on the same engine and have the same formula as the previous games. But i do expect people to love it like the previous one's.
Because when it first came out, it was cutting edge. It was the Crysis of it's day in terms of the game engine. Plus it continued the story of the first Half-life, which was one of the first shooters to have a story with substance. While it's true that the game is beginning to really show it's age, people need to remember it was of the first "Next Gen" games.
If you played it 6 years ago it would have been the most amazing game ever. Now it's... not so amazing. It's still cool, it's just that physics aren't exactly special anymore.
You're playing it for the gameplay, which is 100% not what it was designed for. Think of it as an interactive novel, only it's actually interactive.

Need clarification, did you also play Episodes 1&2?
And because it was so new and incredible at the time, they have primitive physics puzzles every 15 seconds.
pretty much valve sort of saying "hey look we have physics" and reminding you why the game is so amazing
You're just playing it 6 years late, it was amazing back then. Now it's a mediocre game compared to other stuff out there. The story is still awesome, though.
I don't understand the story. :crying: No, I didn't play HL1
the story of hl1 and hl2 aren't really related all that much besides a few similar characters you never really see any of the "returning" characters from hl1 in hl1 since they all the doctors and security guards used a small selection of models
It has a perfect story and great game play, you can`t be playing the actual HL2 if you don`t get it.
After a while HL2 got old for me, but then I played EP2. Mind was blown at how much it improved. IMO at least.
The stories for HL1 and 2 are related, bepassley, you just have to go deeper. Since Freeman opened up a pathway to Xen, that same pathway allowed the Combine to come to Earth.
I don't understand the story. :crying: No, I didn't play HL1
At first I didn't, but the context in Half Life 2 was enough for me to understand what happened in HL1. Then I bought HL1. You should, too.
The stories for HL1 and 2 are related, bepassley, you just have to go deeper. Since Freeman opened up a pathway to Xen, that same pathway allowed the Combine to come to Earth.
not knowing that still shouldn't inhibit you from understanding the plot of half life 2
I didn't like HL2 that much either and to be completely honest i got bored with it, so I just dropped it and tried episode 1 and 2 and had an awesome blast. This is how I confused myself.
You find it overrated, yet you played it for seven hours?
It is an older game, yes, but it still has some awesome moments. And especially a cool atmosphere. What with the drained ocean, Ravenholm, and City 17 as a whole. And graphics IMO are still pretty decent I'd say.
Like everyone is saying, you're late, back when it was released HL2 was the best game in terms of storyline, the awesome Havok physics engine and also the faceposer, when the tech demo was shown at E3 everyone came buckets at the GMan doing various face expressions.
the story of hl1 and hl2 aren't really related all that much besides a few similar characters you never really see any of the "returning" characters from hl1 in hl1 since they all the doctors and security guards used a small selection of models
I do like how they kept the models relatively the same. Like Klinier looks a lot like some of the scientists. Also Barney looks like the guards, and how the beer all the guards seemed to owe you. And the soup stuff in the microwave in HL1 was metioned by Magnusson in Episode 2.

Oh, and btw. Try doing it again from Eli's lab only using the gravity gun. Loads of fun.
I bought HL2 for gmod, I saw him playing gmod in his house and I thought "I have to get this" so I bought some bundle of hl1 hl2 and css, and played hl2 out of curiosity, I thought it was alright, but it grew on me like fuck. Now when I play it I fucking love it, and despite the fact that the graphics are outdated by today's standards, it just feels so real to me.

Loads of fun.
references and homages are not ripping off if singularity was a complete half life 2 rip off then they wouldn't have even bothered with the whole time manipulation part of the game
I played HL2 back when it was still new and amazing and revolutionary and whatnot. I fucking hated it. The visuals were boring and bland, the physics puzzles were predictable and easy, the characters were annoying as shit(I felt more hatred for Alyx Vance than for any antagonist in any other game, ever), the gunfights were slow and unexciting even when using the gravity gun, the story was pretty mediocre and the whole game lacked soul. I felt(and still feel) that Half-Life 2 is one of the most overrated, soulless pieces of shit ever made. I tried playing the episodes as well but decided not to finish them due to the fact that they were just more of the same. I'll take Far Cry and Doom 3 over HL2 any day, thank you very much.
