Why does minecraft make my pc freeze on both the launcher and the browser, then freezes and breaks my sata HDD?

Does it take a complete supercomputer to host a server? I have an okay one that can run minecraft fairly well with a little lag, but I was just wondering if I got the server software, would I be able to host a server well without my computer spontaneously combusting?
