The old thread for this game is gone so I decided it needed another one. The old one was out of date anyway. This might be a slight wall of text, but it will be worth the read. Anyway, for starters, here is the website's description of the game.
Fight in the theatre of war that changed the world forever. Battle alongside your compatriots on some of the most inhospitable environments of the Eastern Front in Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 RO places you in the most realistic WWII first-person multi-player combat to date on the PC, allowing the player to fight through some of the most intense combat of the war. You can play as infantry, using a wide range of infantry weapons, or crew one of the many armoured combat vehicles available in the game, from half-tracks all the way through to the most famous German and Soviet heavy tanks. You can engage the enemy with everything from your bayonet at close quarters up to the massive 122mm cannon on the Soviet IS-2. And if that isn't enough, find an officer and a radio to call in thunderous artillery strikes to shake the enemy loose. Key Features * Fight intense battles on 13 authentic Eastern Front combat environments * Crew 14 fully realized vehicles with highly detailed exterior and interior models * Choose from 28 authentic infantry weapons * Full 64 player online Multiplayer Support * Unique Setting – the only FPS to focus on the WWII Russian Front * Engage enemy tanks at 800 metres and more with the Simulation-level armored vehicle combat * Fight the full range of combined arms infantry and vehicle combat in detailed environments based on real-world data, from city-centre to deeply rural settings * Realistic bullet and projectile ballistics will make you duck for cover * Coordinate strategies with your team-mates via Voice Over IP * Authentic Immersive Sound FX and 3d Positional Sound System * 3d “Iron Sights” and unique 3d scope system * True weapon deployment system including resting rifles on support * Historically accurate artillery system * Distance-based sound system dynamically creates the battle ambiance * Advanced player movement system featuring diving over obstacles and leaning * Custom 8 way animation system for highly realistic player animations
Now, every game out there boasts to be this and that and what not, but this game actually delivers. Red Orchestra was origionally a mod for UT2k4 and the developers (Tripwire Interactive, same guys that made the new game Killing Floor which was also origionally a mod) won a contest that gave them funding and rights to the new Unreal 2.5 engine to make their own full scale game. What they made was Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 and my god it's badass. This game in my opinion is the best WWII game ever made just because they put so much detail in it. The game is extremely accurate historically speaking and in realism. The ballistics system is the best I've ever seen in a game, shells from tanks will literally bounce and ricochet off heavy armor and things and so do regular bullets (not just the tracer rounds you see) which you can see from the tracers in this trailer. I'd like to go on and on about all the features but I don't think I could fit all the cool stuff in this game into this thread without making it a huge wall of text that no one wants to read, so instead I will point out some of the stuff I really found impressive about the game. Weapon Support and Weapon Features Now this is one thing where they hit the nail right on the head. The weapon resting/support system. For those of you who don't quite get what it means, it basically allows you to prop your weapon up on anything to support it without having to deploy something that makes you unable to move. This actually gives you an advantage other than protection from bullets when you use cover and makes the game much more tactical. That is my personal favorite feature and they're the only game to have done it that I know of and were the first to do it. Aside from that, the other thing that impresses me when it comes to infantry combat is the weapons themselves, most specifically the machine guns. The MG42 for example will shred infantry like a wood chipper but the barrel will overheat extremely quickly. Sticking to its great historical accuracy, you can extract the hot barrel from the right side of the gun like in reality and replace the barrel and keep shooting. Fixable bayonets, realistic recoil on the Russian SMGs, and the feature of actually having to click to work the action on bolt action rifles are also very cool. This guy lags because of his recorder but it shows the stuff. Hitboxes and Gore Another thing they did really well in this game is the hitboxes and how they did gore. The hitboxes are specific to parts of your body and when you take a hit in them you actually react in different ways. If your legs are hit you may fall, and youcan't sprint for as long, if your hand is hit, you drop your weapon, if your arm is hit the weapons recoil more unsupported and are less steady. On top of that, the game does have gore, and lots of it. Grenades will leave you as a bloody mess and can remove limbs if they're close enough. Things like a HE tank shell can completely disintegrate people, turning them into a cloud of blood and body parts but that is pretty rare. It's not over the top and it adds to the feeling. This is what grenades do: (Warning: big pic) ARMOR Ok, finally, this is the thing that they did the best job on probably. The armor combat in RO is amazing. It's basically simulation level, and it's extremely good due to the great ballistics system they made. Tanks and vehicles, like players, have a lot of hitboxes. This makes the armor combat very realistic when combined with the awesome ballistics and makes different armor shapes and weak points play major roles in taking down armor. The lack of bazookas and things like that (The Russians use a PTRD Anti-Tank rifle or satchel charges for anti armor, the Germans have the disposable Panzerfaust) means that taking down armor, especially big stuff, is very much a matter of tactics and outsmarting the enemy. You can't just shoot the front of a tank X number of times and its health reduces to 0 and it blows up. You have to flank and hit the rear or magazine (specific points generally around the middle above the track) or disable it and get in close enough to put a satchel charge on it. Tanks can have their engines and guns damaged or destroyed and tracks can be blown off so knowing how to position your tank so these areas aren't vulnerable is important. It's very smooth and realistic and extremely fun, and even though it's complicated it's not that hard so pretty much anyone can get in a tank and play. Ok, that concludes that. I seriously recommend picking this game up if you don't own it, and if you have it uninstalled, reinstall it. It's only $15 on steam and it's very much worth it. The game's online community has gotten very good here lately and is much better than it used to be. So join in. I have a steam group set up for Facepunch (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/facepunchro) and you can add me as killer_pizza (Nickname: Linelor) on steam if you want to play a game. See you on the eastern front! Also, this game just got some awesome steam achievements to keep you busy as well and has a bunch of mods and stuff for it. Darkest Hour Darkest Hour is a mod for RO that adds the western front (Britain and Unites States vs Germany) and a lot of neat features to boot. For example, just with the last update: * Suppression system: Now an MG can have an enemy squad cowering in the trenches - try drawing a bead on an MG 42 who is firing at your squad and you will see what we mean. This is a combination of blur, shake and flinching when you are in the immediate vicinity of a lot of flying lead. * New tracers: These are not quite as bright and visible as the standard. You can see them but, combined with the suppression, it is less easy to trace back to an MG who is firing at you. * New vehicle damage - Engine fires: These are no laughing matter - they kill your engine and, may also lead to ... * New vehicle damage - Hull fires: If one of these starts you may only have a few seconds to bail out.... or you may have a lot longer. Do you feel lucky with all that burning fuel inside your tank? * New vehicle damage - Crew kills: hit the right part of a tank and penetrate the armour and you might destroy one of its most vital components - the crewman. * Canister shot: Fired from the Stuart's 37mm cannon this is best described as ‘God's own shotgun'. Any infantry near this had better look out. Not a whole lot of special stuff to it other than nice new vehicles and weapons and some really good map design. Carpathian Crosses I don't really know a whole lot about this mod, but it focuses around southern Europe and was the first mod for RO. Here's their description.
This mod brings the next new nationality to the game. The Romanians, who provided the single largest contingent of Axis troops on the Eastern Front, after the Germans themselves. The player will get to experience a completely unique setting, that has never been done before! On top of that, they are also adding the famous Russian Black Sea Naval Infantry - the "Black Death". The mod features new maps, new models, new vehicles and weapons including the first playable mortars. Here is a short summary of the new features included: # 5 new maps, including close-quarters infantry combat, combined arms and wide open tank maps # 2 new tanks: the Romanian Renault R-35 and the Soviet T-26 # 9 new weapons, including anti-tank grenades, the ZB-30 machine-gun # and playable mortars # A detailed mortar crewman and spotter system to support the mortars # Romanian player classes with appropriate gear and uniforms; plus the Soviet Black Sea Naval infantry # New tank system features # Full support for custom mappers # And the mod is integrated directly into the original Red Orchestra game
This game looks extremely badass, Ive always wanted to play it, just haven't got around to buying it.
Looks very good, I might have to pick it up.
I love tank combat in mah panther, or getting a sniper and popping the tank commander surveying the area with binoculars.
More fun to decap the guy poking his head out of the driver port with a tank shell and watch the little red puff.
I've had this game since it was $5. I suck terribly at it. Is there some option you can set to make movement and aiming smoother? Turning off mouse smoothing helped a bit. Also tank maps are awful.
Lots of fun, this game is. It takes a bit to get used to, however, as the mouse controls are a bit iffy. But fantastic game, nonetheless.
RO was an amazing mod and I bought it when it first became a retail game. A lot of learning and a lot of patients is involved, but it is fun.
I never got around buying this game, I played it during the free weekends and it was fun but i dont have money atm
I had no idea you could blow up tank parts. You just got me interested in this again, brb reinstalling
I have gore turned of because it is so unnecessarily brutal and violent.
That Normandy mod they made for it is awesome, too bad no one plays it. I wanna do Omaha Beach in a full server.
I have gore turned of because it is so unnecessarily brutal and violent.
War is brutal and violent
I have this and the "Darkest Hour" mod. I've never played it, though. :v:
War is brutal and violent
I'd like my war games to remain cheery and happy.
One time I was behind a friendly tank, and a bad guy tank shot at it, and the shell ricocheted off and killed a guy behind me. I have a lot of brutal stories, in fact.
Why does this shit never happen to me. When I played RO it was just BF1942 centered around the Eastern front of Europe. Seriously, IT LOOKS JUST LIKE BF1942.
Why does this shit never happen to me. When I played RO it was just BF1942 centered around the Eastern front of Europe. Seriously, IT LOOKS JUST LIKE BF1942.
It's nothing like 1942 other than being WWII
I remember one time on the map Odessa I was in the tall tower. A sniper shot off the last remaining guy except for me and I single handedly held off a wave and a half of Russians with my StG44 before they decided to grenade spam me.
Brutal Story #2: On stalingrad, we were holding the last bridge. They were coming over the rubble shit in waves, with at least 2 tanks. We had 1 tank shootan at them. Naturally I'm hiding behind it shootan germans. So our commander has the brilliant idea of throwing smoke onto the bridge. Some tank shot at ours, it ricocheted off and killed our commander.
Linelor, mind if I add you for some RO action?
Go for it. My favorite brutal story. In a full halftrack, going along, it's dead quiet and all of a sudden an MG opens up on us. We continue through it and our MG34 is blazing away. About 3 seconds later a round from a PTRD rips through the side and the guy in front of me's head disintegrates and the guy to my right gets a gaping hole though the chest. Everyone flips shit and bails, and takes cover behind the halftrack and starts shooting at the Russians on the ridge right ahead of us. Just then, a tank shoots a T34 on the hill, the shell bounces off, falls back down, and lands on top of the halftrack, killing the only guy left in it, the gunner. Then we all got raped by grenades and machine gun fire, but it was hilarious and intense none-the-less.
Do people still screw around with the BA-64 "Clown Car"?
I remember I once killed like, 4 Germans under smoke cover then ran into a room with like 5 German riflemen in it and they killed me firing squad style.
I have gore turned of because it is so unnecessarily brutal and violent.
Now, I'm sorry, i hate calling things "gay" or "fag" just for the sake of it, i think it's stupid... but in this case it applies perfectly. How gay!.
All servers should be 50 players or above. Smaller servers makes me waste my time . I just started the game again, haven't played this in ages. When i look in the serverlist theres a load of servers with like 220/50 playing.. what the hell is going on with those? Edit: Nvm, the numbers fix themselves when selecting the server. Guess its a cheap way of advertising the server.
Angelangel, I didn't know you were such a pussy! Also, I played this game when it was free weekend shits, but never got around to buy it (because I dunt have a creditcard =( )
