The studio is opening Steam up in terms of formats this year - promoting Steamworks on PS3 and transferring the service to Mac. However, the firm has quashed any suggestion that it may be looking at another windows rival. When asked if it was working on a Linux version of the digital game sales platform, Valve's Doug Lombardi told GI.biz: "There's no Linux version that we're working on right now." It doesn't get much more comprehensive than that, folks. However, Lombardi was very excited about Steam on Mac - predicting that 2011 will see lots of games released simultaneously on PC and Apple's rival format. He added: "People are looking at their titles for this holiday and saying 'a Mac version would screw with my schedule or I'd have to ship it late. Neither of those is super-desirable. But the titles that I have in Spring of 2011 or in holiday of 2011, let's have a discussion and let's see those numbers and start to figure it out.' "So that's when folks can really start to see the advent of simultaneous releases on new Mac releases really start to kick in, now that the foundation has been laid this year if you will. You'll see some new releases coming in 2011 - including our own one, Portal 2."
And that just sucks.
Well that's a major disappointment...
This wasnt a triumph
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Expected, they never confirmed any work on the Linux client past that leaked Proof of Concept client. People just assumed that they were working on it.
Dont the really hardcore Linux users hate anything thats not free and open source? They'd bash the shit out of Steam on their forums on something
Dont the really hardcore Linux users hate anything thats not free and open source? They'd bash the shit out of Steam on their forums on something
Umm no. While we appreciate free and open source stuff, we don't mind if its not. Seriously, if a linux user comes into steam expecting everything to be free, then thats pretty stupid.
Bummer.

For example I am aware of people so set in their "principles" that they will not install the relatively well maintained Linux nVidia graphics driver, choosing instead a sub-par open source alternative driver.
Some linux people can get a bit crazy about open source and other things at times, but now I'm stuck on windows permanently.
This might sound stupid (I don't have much experience with Linux.), but what about Wine? Would that work at all?
It does, but it's slow. I haven't tried running a source game with wine yet.
Aww. I wanted a TF2 Penguin hat.

Just think about it for a sec. linux only has about 3% of the market share and how many of those people are gamers? Supporting linux along side pc and mac versions will double their development and maintenance cost (and time) for a non-existent market.
You know, it'd be very hard to code Steam for Linux, since there are so many distributions, all differently coded.
Valve, you just broke my heart. And Yoces, no. You're wrong. They just have to use OpenGL for graphics and something like OpenAL for sound and it'll work on any distro that has proper graphics + sound drivers. It's packaging for each distro that is hard. -.-' But I think valve could work around that just fine.
The entire linux community is a small minority. It's a vicious cycle that valve can break. It's a real shame they're not going to support linux yet. I'm sure there are many linux people here forced to use Windows for gaming, I know I am. Also, it's only extremists like Stallman that care if it's not open-source. Those people give linux a bad name. It's actually a very secure and efficient platform. No wonder it's used by pretty much EVERY major film studio in the world. Titanic, LOTR, Avatar, All animated dreamworks + pixar films since 2001-ish, star wars ep2 + ep3, etc. All made using linux desktop machines + linux servers.
It's only 3%
I bet a million dollars you just pulled that number out your ass.
I bet a million dollars you just pulled that number out your ass.
Incorrect. I pulled it out of aydin690's ass. Scroll up, he posted that number, not me. I'll accept paypal.
Incorrect. I pulled it out of aydin690's ass. Scroll up, he posted that number, not me. I'll accept paypal.
You therefor judged what he said. You indirectly pulled it out your ass, because you don't have a chart. Get out of here.
Get out of here
Chill out. You were wrong and you got corrected. No need to get pissy about it.
