Do you think it's possible to make a map set on a halo or ring world that's completely open world? Like you could start walking the length of the ring world's interior circumference and eventually end up in the same place you started.
One of the things to consider is gravity. Can you even program gravity to work on the interior of a ring world? I guess you could make the map work sort of like a hamster wheel. Like having a gravity well beneath the character model and having the ring world rotate in the opposite direction the character is walking.
I know there are games that have massive, open world games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and World of Warcraft. But I'm not sure how much computational strain dozens if not hundreds of square kilometers of land would cause. I suppose there could be loading screens, but it would be heart breaking if you couldn't travel the ring world seamlessly
I'm not sure how you would make a sky box for such a map. I suppose you could just make a box or sphere. Or you could make cylindrical or ring shaped sky box and put the ring world in there.
Some pictures for your viewing pleasure and to make it look like I put more effort into this thread then I did:

That's disc world. Don't confuse mega structures with each other.
Kinda like the Citadel in ME?
The game Shores of Hazeron has Ring Worlds in it.
that sounds quite tricky. hacky visual tricks would probably used to make it easier if this was in a game.

Yeah, sounds like Hazeron.
I loved this book and read all its sequels.
I guess I'll go get the book from the library tomorrow. Just checked and they have one of them available for reading.
Like an above poster has said, Shores of Hazeron has Ringworlds in them. Not those tiny halo ringworlds either. These things wrap around the sun, just like OP's first picture. My empire has a ringworld and has 2 of its most bustling cities on them.
Seems possible, you only have to have so much showing at once, the rest can just be scenery in the distance, much like how most open worlds work, if I'm not mistaken. Would it be possible to pretty much fall off the side of the world? The biggest constraint would probably be optimizing to make load times invisible between cells or whatever.
