Cant play HL2 anymore because of achievement update
83 replies, posted
When valve updated HL2 for achievements they also updated the source engine in it which now i cant play the game for like 5 mins until a B.S.O.D. comes up telling me it has shut down my computer.DO NOT POST"oh just buy a new driver or graphics card for your computer".If ur going to complain about this thread, do it in another. So i really think we should have a option to play the engine before the update or the achievement engine.
If your computer is that old, I don't really think we can help you.
What are your specs?
Really, if you can't run the OB engine at all on your computer, it must be pretty old.
clean your pc, that will help.
All that can really be said is to get a new computer.
Buying a new PC for sake of playing games which you could play before but can't play anymore is stupid. Valve should always give a choice to play the older versions, or keep it at least basically compatible with the original hardware which ran it.
Try running it with -dx_level 81 argument in "Advanced Settings" or how is that option in Steam named..
Email gabe to complain.

wat
i can play source engine 7 fine without any B.S.O.D. and i use 3d analyze to make the game to look like i have a modern graphics card, but my specs are
OS:Microsoft Windows Xp Professional (5.1 Build 2600)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Graphics: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
Sound: SoundMAX Digital Audio
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
Graphics: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
How about no?
Just get a better computer. Integrated graphics cards are awful.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about too much, but please, the running it with the -dxlevel 81 option, as I told you.
OP can't type or use grammar or spell, if you want help you have to do these.

ill give it a try
I agree, I seem to run HL2 shit now, but ep2 is fine on max. Maybe it's because of the shitty fakefactory textures I'm using.

yes, but that basically is your only option, if your computer is THAT old.
running in direct x 8 might help, but besides that, upgrading is your only other option
Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller

There's the problem.
Seriously, that PC is virtually unupgradable. It probably only has AGP 4x.

Please, "You" is a three letter word, and "D" and ' aren't very hard to press either.

And besides, you didn't even post in the right section.
You have an ATi Xpress 200M series card, don't you?
It has problems with the Orange Box engine. There's an older set of Catalyst drivers that'll work for you. You don't have to buy them, either. Drivers are free.
Edit: Oh no, you don't. Regardless, hit up Google and look up some newer drivers, and if that doesn't work, roll back to some older ones. That might help you some.

nope, just tried it and just got a blue screen of death

Buy a new driver for your graphics computer.

you need a new computer then. there's not much else you can do
oh yeah by the way my computer cant run portal or TF2 because it gives me a error say i need pixel shader to run it
You are incredibly lucky that PC was able to play HL2 in the first place. Most games developers wouldn't bother trying to support hardware that underpowered.
Your CPU is 10 years old now. You cannot expect us to not suggest an upgrade.

I wonder if it means you should upgrade your computer like everyone in this thread told you to.
Just, get some low-profile 9500GT for PCI, they're like $60 and runs a ton of games.
You guys are assholes. It's not like he brought the game knowing that his PC won't run it. Imagine you are buying a game that your PC can barely run, and then, suddently, the game becomes unplayable because developers updated it.

If I remember correctly, that happened to Gmod too, and now we're the bad guys?

It's a miracle you survived that long on integrated graphics.

That sentence should continue with 'because developers updated it with features that require better hardware than the one you're running how'. Besides, he's running an INTEGRATED GPU, it's a fucking miracle he could play it in the first place. Stop acting like we're dicks, his computer just sucks.

Funny how HL2 didn't support his GPU before the orange box update, it's still his fault for buying a game that isn't even supposed to run on his pc.
