Short guide on how to model swap.

Before I start, I no longer play WoW but when I did I model swapped [i]extensively,[/i] meaning I hardly played the game without model swapping my race/mount. I model swapped for two years and was never banned, even when (over a year ago) you needed to launch a third party .exe to get it to work, now it's a lot safer and again, me and others I know have model swapped for years and have never been given a warning, model swapping does not give anyone an advantage, it just makes your character/items look different.

Model swapping, in short simply swaps a model in-game for another. And model swapping is ONLY client only, meaning no-one but you will see the difference. When I model swapped I only swapped my race, I had been playing an Orc for two years and I didn't want to re-roll to another race just to get a different feel, so I model swapped, being a Human Shaman was fun and I looked a beast.

[b]Due to the nature of the game only certain things can be changed, you cannot change stealthed targets to be unstealthed or change the size of Mine nodes/Herbs as the game does not allow this therefore model swapping is generally not cared about by blizzard as it gives no advantage. The changes are only visual and do not change any hitboxes in the game, if you change from a Gnome to a Tauren, you will have the exact same hitbox as being a Gnome and only you will be able to see the change. How to model swap;

[highlight]Step 1[/highlight]. Navigate to "Program files\World of Warcraft\Data".

[highlight]Step 2[/highlight]. Go to [url]http://www.mmowned.com/forums/world-of-warcraft/model-editing/[/url] and look for a swap you want, the website is heavily moderated and you shouldn't have a problem finding what you want. If you want to Race swap (most common sort of swap) use;

It has most if not all of the race swaps, find the race you currently are in-game and choose what you want to change too, for example, if I was human and wanted to change Night Elf female, I'd find "Human Male to Night Elf Female!" click the link.

[highlight]Step 3[/highlight]. Download the file in question (the specific thread I linked is safe and all the files are .rar'd out of security) extract if needed and you should be left with a .MPQ file.

[highlight]Step 4[/highlight]. Renaming the file is crucial for it to work, however sometimes the downloaded file can be the correct name. Have another glance at the Data folder in step 1. and inside you should be greeted with many ".MPQ" files, you want your new ".MPQ" which you downloaded to be called;

"patch-5.MPQ"

If you are using multiple swaps you will then need to use;

"patch-6.MPQ"

and etc. The more you use, the larger the single digit number must be. It's capital letter sensitive, so it must look exactly like that.

[highlight]Step 5[/highlight]. Put the file in the "\Data" folder, it should look like the others.

[highlight]Step 6[/highlight]. Launch the game as normal, enjoy the swapped look. Sometimes model swap files are outdated and as such will give you an error and the game will crash, to revert the model swap simply delete the file you you downloaded, renamed and dragged into the "Data" folder. If it doesn't work you may have to download a newer model swap depending on the version the game is on, when the game updates the model swaps [i]sometimes[/i] go out of date, this is common.

[highlight]If under any circumstances you are banned for using this guide or model swapping, I do not take responsibility, it is very unlikely as stated at the start of the guide, but as told by a friend, I'm writing this anyway.

As you can see it's safe apart from a few people reporting malicious downloads, which is true as even though it's moderated heavily, idiots still post Model swaps that are in-fact unhealthy for your computer, be smart, download only .rar's (only good contributers upload .rar's anyhow) and you'll be fine.

If you use the Race swap thread as linked in step 2. you will not get banned, if you use other swaps from the forum make sure to read the thread itself and see if anyone else has stated as having problems or that it might be ban worthy, swap smart.

Just for future's sake, this will no longer work in Cataclysm due to the new MPQ system, you'd have to edit an existing MPQ which the streaming system probably overwrites when the hash check fails.

And remember, some file swaps will still get you banned.

Thanks for list, I'll add them to the OP with credit, I remember seeing this a while back but didn't bother to look for it and put it at first, the ones listed are removed from the "mmowned.com" due to the nature, but thanks.
If you're an idiot and download every file you come across without having the common sense to atleast check the thread before-hand, then you're likeliness to get banned to go up ten-fold, but I trust facepunchers to play it smart, it's their own fault for downloading and using silly model swaps like these in the first place, and in the website I linked they're under a completely different board to keep the safe from the un-safe.

depends on whether the affected file got updated in a patch, character models for example get updated almost every patch
