It seems like forever I've wanted to play some sort of open world zombie game and with zombies more popular than ever with Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising and books like The Zombie Survival Guide I know that I'm far from the only one.
It's pretty much my dream game right now where it would be either top down 3D or third person and basically have GTA styled gameplay but the city is torn apart with zombies everywhere and your basic goal is to survive by having to scavenge through bodies, buildings, cars, etc.
Of course there would also be side missions and stuff where you could help other survivors in different ways or find some sort of solution to the problem.
Not too long ago I was actually developing this dream game of mine on my own and had just gotten it to a buggy but playable state. It was top down but psuedo 3D like the classic GTAs. There was a day night system, constant zombies, survivor missions, hunger and stamina meters and safehouses. The gameplay, graphics and everything was more or less like I wanted but sadly my hard drive crashed and I lost everything... :saddowns:
If anyone knows of any games somewhat like these out there(probably indie) or any that are in development please post them here because I know there's probably people wondering the same thing as me.

They're still immortally in development.
Dead rising is probably the closest for open world and survival sort of things.
Isn't there some tropical zombie island game that was open world or something
and the zombies had like, dynamic layer damage and shit

Rockstar were planning to make one but they began developing Agent instead.

The last news I heard about Dead Island was that all was coming along nicely.

Nope, if it was canceled Xbox would've taken it off its game list (on the marketplace). It's still there even though there's only that teaser trailer from... what? 2 years ago?
Look at Dead State, while its unreleased, looks like it will fulfill your dreams, Fort Zombie had the right idea, but badly implemented things.

I really hope they port it to PC later though because I probably won't even have an Xbox by time it comes out.
Still, I'm surprised that no one has tried to do what I did and there's not at least an indie one out there.

You can't tell much from the screenshots but from what I can tell it looks like it would be awesome if they don't screw something up from now until its release.
fort zombie is open world enough plus it RULES.

When I played Fort Zombie it looked terrible, had terrible controls, and had terrible performance. Is it any better now?

It may be 2d and top-down, but it's pretty much close to what you're looking for. You spend some time in the stronghold, buying ammo and such from the totally player-based marketplace. You bank your cash there, get bandages etc.
Then you go out into the streets and kill zombies and loot the town. It kept my attention for a while before I decided to move on to better things.
You should try it.

The new Yakuza (Basically Japanese GTA) game is going to have zombies, but other than that I don't know much about it. You should look it up.

I've played Dead Frontier but wasn't a fan but I'll look into the other one though.
Also, after just playing it, I realized that Saints Row 2 should have had a zombie cheat put in. It already has the zombie npc from the video game and there's cheats to affect all the pedestrians so I think there should've been a cheat to turn the pedestrians into zombies.

Yeah I really loved Fallout 3 for being close to something like this, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if your own survival had more influence in the game like having hunger so that you would have to eat food and such.
I thought I heard they would have something like that in New Vegas but can't say for sure.
Fallout 3 would have been a lot more fun if random raids and the such on cities would happen. Also, more factions / Cities.
I tried Dead Frontier once. It has horrible hit boxes. You have to shoot directly at the head to score a hit.
I guess Dead Island is dead.

A Zombie MMO would be very innovative and unique I think. No one has released one yet I believe. There was one in development a few years back called Exanimus but it died unfortunely.
