So, after being kicked out of my house and blah blah blah I ended up at my moms house with a pretty decent computer. While it may not be a giant gaming rig, it still works for me. So, for the first time ever I can actually play MMOs. I've looked around, tried a few (Shiya... Oh god) and I just can't seem to find one that I like. I've been to many review sites, and browsed this sub-forum with no success. I just can't tell what is 'good' or 'bad'. So, Facepunch, I want to hear in your opinion. What MMOs don't suck? I guess I'm looking for something in the fantasy area, or Sci-Fi. I would LOVE to play WoW, but I can't afford the $15 a month fee. Thank you!
Try LOTR Online, Warhammer Online. I enjoyed those and both are 'free'
You can't afford $15 a month?
You can't afford $15 a month?
He got kicked out of his house and lives in his moms basement, those 15$ goes to pizza obviously. [editline]7th May 2011[/editline] Try out Runes of Magic and LOTR, seems to be the only half decent free MMO's. They're still not good though.

Anywho I'd suggest checking out the WoW thread and all. If you're in EU there's a guild with alot of facepunchers on Vashj horde side.

[editline]7th May 2011[/editline] But I will check out the WoW thread, thank you!
Guild Wars has no monthly fee and it's very good in my opinion.
Pirates of the Crimson Sea, Global Agenda, Guild Wars, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Vindictus.
Dungeon Siege 1, 2 and 3.
lord of the rings online [editline]9th May 2011[/editline] guild wars is good as well
Most MMOs are going to cost you $15 a month, unless you play a free one like Guild Wars or LOTRO.
MMO quality directly scales with how much the users pay to play. People have to let go of the idea that they can find a A+ MMO thats free.
WoW private servers have come a long way (especially if you play old patches like 1.12.1 or 2.4.3). I would suggest checking those out as a low cost, low system requirement option. If you've never experienced "Vanilla WoW" I would suggest giving it a whirl.
Dungeon Siege 1, 2 and 3.
Hey another Dungeon Siege fan, woo! Maybe I should re-up my DS1 server and have some FPers join me on an epic quest over vent.
MMO quality directly scales with how much the users pay to play. In fact most titles these days are F2P. I would say if you look hard enough you can find many very good games, maybe even A+ for free. Black Prophecy and Lord of The Rings Online comes to mind. APB is also a solid, innovative MMO that is F2P. I wouldn't say Darkfall, Mortal, or Xsyon are any more polished than any F2P title these days.

Very few F2P games are going the route of wow with its giant MMO play area. A lot of F2P games have shared cities or a few areas and thats it. I have played Black Prophecy, Lord of the Rings and APB, and each one has their downfall, big ones at that. I havent played Darkfall, Mortal or Xsyon though, so I can't talk about those. Also, Private servers are amazing if you haven't played WoW before. But I started playing Retail when I saw my friend doing a dungeon where the siege engines actually worked, and that looked fucking fun. For a Private server, magicWoW is pretty good as I used to play there. The deal with these Private servers is you can either go for functional gameplay, or larger playerbase. And theres a chance that the servers could get shut down. http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/29936/Blizzard_Wins_88M_Judgment_Against_WoW_Private_Server_Owner.php This was an operator of one of the biggest Private servers back in the day. Each server had a higher population than the servers on Retail. They were plagued by bugs all the time, and they even ripped off their main Dev, and he quit, leaving behind a huge mess of code for her to fix.

It happened shortly after she shut the servers down even tho she had enough money and to stop the shitstorm about her spending and also scamming various people like 1 guy who made the website but never got his payment.

Guild Wars was excellent in its prime and it was free and Guild Wars 2 is going to be even bigger and is still going to have no monthly fee.
