No idea how much of facepunch actually plays Warcraft III, but here goes. I recently got the idea for a warcraft III map. I have been mapping for a while ( I enjoy mapping a bit more then I enjoy actually playing the game). I do have a good thorough understanding of triggering and terraining. Basicly my idea for the game is an RTS map based on minecraft - it would have common features in minecraft, trees, mining, ect, but made into a none first person and less individualized RTS. Instead of being able to choose from a variety of tools, you would be able to make a tool and assign that tool to someone. After an amount of attacks the tool would break and he would resume to the origonal. Building would be very lackluster in terms of buildings, walls would be the most creative form, I might even add floors for creative purposes, but since the only buildings that would be added would be crafting tables, chests, probably furnaces, and mabye even rails, besides the walls that would be in the game, roofs would most likely never be added. But the point of the game would be more PVP based instead of creativity based. I'm not quite sure how additional steves would be found, I might make them spawn randomly in areas and be rescueable and then can be converted to whatever you need with tools, or trainable, I'm not sure. Also, I think I may have a solution to the mining aspect of the game that it would be surely lacking. Half the map would be lanes of solid rock that the player could mine through, and occasionally spawn minerals that can be used in the crafting table to make stronger tools, but I need more ideas for more uses for the minerals. Resources would basicly be wood from harvesting and stone. Mainly for building purposes and some crafting. Items like Rails, walls, doors, ect can be crafted with such and put into inventory and placed. I don't need direct help in triggering and such in itself, but if i ever hit a bump I'd like some help, or if I need someone to help with ideas, go ahead. Ideas/Suggestions Need -Mineral Uses -How Steves are Found Trigger Bumps -When Saplings grow into trees, the trees do not drop the wood and sapling that the trees pre-placed in the game would have. Here are the two triggers I am using for the tree and the sapling if it gives insight on why newly grown trees do not drop the items. No screenshots worth showing.
I don't see how this would be fun, but it looks cool from a technical standpoint I suppose.
i had an idea for a map like legion td, but your units are giong after other players units. but too lazy to make it happen. too lazy to learn.
I remember most custom maps trying to implement features like you were describing being no fun to play at all. Harvesting wood/minerals in WC3 works perfectly fine as a RTS, but isn't really fit for something like Minecraft, I'd imagine. Also, you'd completely lose any landscape creativity, and so all you could do would be building walls and the interior of a house, which would both get boring quickly and look awful. And lastly, making a WC3 map nowadays might be wasted time. If you really want to, I'd suggest making it on SC2, but still, I doubt it would be any fun. Sorry to be such a buzzkill.
The Hive workshop is a somewhat active warcraft II community in my opinion, and I've seen the warcraft III battlenet still being active
Sadly, w3 custom maps hosted on bnet now are all DotA or some sort of crappy map, and bots everywhere
Pretty much what the guy above me said. DotA in 75% of the custom games, and all the other ones are hosted by bots. Nothing inherently bad in that, but you can be glad if you get 4 people for a TD. WC3 custom maps may still be staggering along, but WC3 mapping is dead. I wasn't trying to destroy your idea, I was just offering criticism. :unsmith:
W3 will still hold a place in my heart, it's the second game I've wasted the most hours on, playing with friends, meeting friends, and the maps just never ended, there was always a sweet map to play and if you didnt know what to play, just check the gamelist and youll eventually find a new cool map! Can't say the same for sc2, and sc2 has more mapping potential, but I do believe Bnet2.0 and the way custom maps are hosted is awful and just makes it easier to see the same 5 maps all the time, and most importantly, only be able to play without friends.
Even if it does turn out bad, and if warcraft II is dead I do love these projects and I have gotten good games together with past maps I've made
