It does but it happens really later on in the game.

PC version of FF7 sucked massive dicks because the music was replaced by midi versions.

The PSX-version also used Midi (same versions as for the PC). It just has a different midi engine.
But I agree, the PSX music is much better.

I should add that you can replace the music with [url=http://www.sylphds.net/f2k3/php/programs.php?category=ff7]Ficedula's FF7 Music program[/url] for anyone who has the PC version. You can just find a download for the PS1 music. All of the songs are less than 5kb and they sound way better. ".minipsf" format.

Ah, beat me to it.

I use this with a .ogg remastered version of the soundtrack, sounds awesome. The hi-res models out there also make the game look a lot nicer.
