Has anyone noticed that most CS:S maps are a lot less wacky and innovative than 1.6 maps? In 1.6, I'd remember maps like de_rats, scoutzknivez, woohoocars, or maps with huge city streets and vehicles. This all seems to be gone in CS:S. All the maps seem to try to look slightly realistic, and they don't have any launch pads or vehicles or weird stuff. What happened in the transition between 1.6 and CS:S that made everyone drop doing what they were doing with CS 1.6 maps?
It's also strange, because, from what I know, the GoldSrc SDK was much harder to use than the Source one, yet maps were much more creative...

But I see your point, because nipper maps are better on 1.6

that james bond theme doesn't help hehe
I am not sure, but I think cars on maps don't exist because the coding doens't exist.
HL1 had the vehicle scripting which was simply "Press use key, press forward key to accelerate" and in HL2 the scripting was completely difficult.
Boxes?
With no previous knowledge of GoldSrc mapping, I'd say it's because CS 1.6 maps are less detailed and mostly just flat surfaces, as compared to Source which "demands" detail to be pretty.
*_*rats maps have to be one of my favorite map types in cs 1.6.
1.6, is the only good Counter-Strike game.
1.6 used to be awesome. woohoocars and similar maps could bring tears to your eyes with how funny they were.
as_crazytank maps were all good too, never seemed to live past 1.6/Condition Zero.
the de_rats maps were good too, and there were heaps of random maps with wierd gameplay and hidden secrets. I remember one map where there were just loads of huge things, like one was a huge chicken you could drive around, another was a massive robot which was really too tall and tons of fun stuff like that. Could drive a floating cloud too.
What happened to them all :(
Isn't GoldSrc SDK just Hammer with less features?
Yeah, but a friend of mine was a regular user of the GoldSrc SDK, and when he switched to Source, he was amazed at how easier everything is to do.

Just gotta find the right servers to play on.
CS:S is actually where I started off gaming
I didn't really play much, but CS:S dragged me in.

I remember playing on a Nipper only server. It was the best one around; Big_city_2 was always my favorite.

Doesn't CC:S have more irritating players?
GoldSrc vehicles were alot easier to use and were not reliant on physics.
Src vehicles are physics reliant and are as such, buggy to hell and back.

Were the GoldSrc ones just on a track like the one in Half-Life, or could you actually fully steer them?
Im pretty certain that you can make "cars" in CSS, unless for some reason Valve didn't include func_tracktrain in the css database then making these could easily be done. It wouldn't really be a car but it would be similar to the plats moving in the video.
You can basically make anything in Hammer. Some things just require more work and knowledge of entities than others.

Wait, what are you taking about? Hammer does have them. Func_tracktrains are used for alot of moving brushes and props.

how long have you even been playing css

Yeah, basically all the moving "cars" in that video are just brushes made in the shape of a car (or whatever you want to mold them into) and then made into a func_tracktrain and set on a path. So its weird that not a lot of people do these maps anymore when its just as easy to do them now as it was then.
People, keep doing them.
Actually, the tanks in the video aren't function_tracktrrain and some other vehicle function.
Oh, and moving brushes in source are just... even more buggy than in GldSrc.
i don't like wacky maps like that one tfc map where you had to hunt down homer simpson. i figure they were funny at the time, but nowadays they just feel unfunny and considering the sheer amount of people who play tfc nowadays, it was actually a bit scary as i was playing with bots.
I prefer the de_ maps, Inferno, D2, Nuke and Cbble.
In 1.6 of course
