• Brick - Now, I know what you're thinking...

Hello, people of Facepunch. I come to you humbly, for a reason that will be all too apparent soon. For now, I present Brick. Brick is a block-based first person sandbox of sorts. It's pretty low on raw content at the moment, but constantly growing. In terms of blocks, there are the staples: Dirt, stone, various ores, trees, etc. In addition, items can be crafted such as a knife, formal wear, and tools. The main 'appeal' of Brick is the fact that it has been designed to be entirely expandable. New blocks, items, recipes, and events can be made with nothing more than a text editor and an image editor that can save Targa files. It requires no programming experience to do, and the design goal of Brick is for it to be powered by user content. Now, the title of the thread is referring to Facepunch's everlasting love of Minecraft. I am aware of this, and I am aware of how similar the two games appear, and I have already been criticized by some anonymous internet-goers for that. ("Why copy Minecraft?") The reason I'm posting this here anyway is that Facepunch is the only community that I feel somewhat a part of, and is the only community I know that I feel would appreciate IRE for what it is. (IRE being my name for the item-recipe-event engine.) That being said, I also know that I will receive some flak for the aforementioned similarities. In my defense, Minecraft began as an Infiniminer clone. Anyway, as far as I know, only a total of about eight people have played Brick. I wanted a bit of exposure so I thought this would be a good place to start. On to gameplay. WASD - Move Space - Jump Left Click - Primary equipment function, (When nothing is equipped, places selected block.) select item in inventory, trigger crafting. Right Click - Destroy targeted block, move selected item to a different inventory/crafting space. I - Open/Close inventory Ctrl - Mass modifier (Moves entire stacks at once/Crafts as much as possible) To craft, left click an item in the inventory to select it, right click a crafting space to place a block there, and then when you have the necessary ingredients, left click the green box. Certain recipes don't consume some of their ingredients, leaving them in the crafting table. You can return an item in the crafting table to the inventory by right clicking it. I'd like people to try and figure recipes out on their own, but two metal ore of the same type, side by side, will yield a metal block of that type. I should also mention, the table is location-sensitive. So that same recipe won't work one row down. When you successfully craft something with an item in each space, it will upgrade your crafting table. As for any questions, comments, complaints, I'd be happy to respond to them. So, care to give a link to your game so we can test it ?
So, care to give a link to your game so we can test it ?
You're a bad reader. There is a link. Perfect example of peoples who doesn't read the OP.
Sounds like Minecraft...
Sounds like Minecraft...
And plays like a really early version of minecraft.
Fuck, that link is barely visible, I read the entire OP and didn't even notice the blue words.
I shat bricks when I saw this
Well the game looks like minecraft's evil deformed siamese twin. You should try making something different or you will just finish making the exact same game.
Fuck, that link is barely visible, I read the entire OP and didn't even notice the blue words.
Riiiighhht...I scimmed over the OP and it took me about a half second to find it, you need to get your eyes checked buddy.
Its okay, but it has no original features. You might aswell play minecraft, as it has everything this have and more.
I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know what I think. From what I've read, it's basically a more easily editable Minecraft, so you'll have to figure out something to really separate yourself from it. Stuff like adding more RPG elements (think skills, etc.), or whatever. As a lot of the Minecraft fanbase is pretty "hard-core" you'll have a hard time convincing them that it's different.
Well you can't catch up to minecraft but you still can do something interesting with it. Physics, mounts, airships, machines, earthquakes reshaping the land, volcanos, advanced water and magma physics.... Notch is starting a company you know...
Zip download link plz
Awesome. This is more of a reaction than I expected. "Lack of features" - I'm well aware of this. I've lately been focusing on adding more functionality to the event engine, so I'll be making things that will really take advantage of that soon. I'm also going to be making programmable actors/AI that use z-sprites, and rather than infinite worlds, multiple, finite worlds that are connected via crafted portal block, where the recipe influences the shape of the new world. RPG Elements have been considered, both in an RPG gamemode, and in equipment granting different effects on the wearer. The original features that I already HAVE is IRE. Graphics-wise, I know it looks terrible, but I have no talent with art, and I'm looking for artists. Some of the 'unique' new content I want to make would involve logic gates, simple machines that do things like autonomously lay blocks in a line, machines that follow instructions according to the block below them, etc. IRE seems very underwhelming, but I think it deserves a little more credit.
IRE sounds cool. I think it could work in a lot of different games, but making a game this similar to Minecraft probably won't go well.
Why not just use the same mouse layout as Minecraft? It'd confuse me to have two games with such similar themes use reverse maps.

I've tested it a bit and I gotta say it really is basically like a old version of Minecraft. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing. I like the way it looks and feels, though if you've played a lot of Minecraft before the mouse controls feel pretty awkward. Anyway, keep working on this, I think it's going in the right direction. And yes, I do think that those will be substantial additions. I expand IRE on a need-to-have basis, and right now, I 'need' to have wool, so expect actor framework in the future. I also want gamemodes to be very much possible. In addition to an RPG one, I have a city-esque mode in mind where the camera is at the top of the map and even though you place blocks in the same way, they would 'unfold' into buildings. (The unfolding is technically already there. It's how trees are made.) I love suggestions, both for new content and for new functionality, so keep it coming.
I suggest you try and head in a direction that makes it substantially different to minecraft pretty quickly unless you want the whole of the internet on you. The infiminer clone excuse doesn't really work. I don't really care myself but just saying, if you clone it people will come after you. The city-esque gamemode you just mentioned is a great idea.
I will play it when it's not rar
You can download winrar from their site and the trial never really runs out
Why the hell would you use WinRAR when 7-zip is completely free, open source and doesn't clutter your right click menu (It's a sub menu). It also opens a lot more than the standard RARs and ZIPs too.

You can disable shell integration in the options. Also, I just straight up don't like 7z. It's like Chrome vs. Firefox vs. Opera. They're all great, you simply can't go wrong, the argument is pointless. Some people are just looking for different things.
Except it's, if I remember correctly, illegal to continue using WinRAR after the trial's ran out.
No, it isn't.
Well, technically you must buy or remove it from your computer after 40 days are over and you've figured out that it does run on your computer.
The purchaser should test the RAR Software during this test phase to determine if it meets his requirements and needs. In particular, the Customer must determine if the RAR Software runs under his operating system and in his desired hardware and software environment. He promises to acquire a Licence for the RAR Software only if and when he has assured himself that he can answer the above-mentioned questions with "yes".
No, it isn't.
Add a sky and ill play it.
