TERA is a fast, action-based triple A title developed and published by En Masse Entertainment and Bluehole Studios. The game was released in Korea in late January, and has thus far (2/07/11) been a general success. Some players from NA/EU took part in Korean beta events, and have even been playing the Korean release. The game does not have a set release date for North American or European markets. A community play event was announced to take place in March, earlier today. (2/07/11)
TERA doesn't seem to have a strict PvE or PvP focus. TERA offers traditional roaming mobs, tough world bosses of all levels, dungeons, raids, and likely other events - for PvP, there is open world PvP, duels, and battlegrounds. (5v5 and 10v10 formats, 15v15, 20v20 etc are rumored to come later on)
More importantly, TERA has a fleshed out political system, where players can hold positions of political power, changing aspects of the game such as experience or gold rates in certain areas. TERA holds a heavy social aspect, there is a guild system and guild warfare/social drama is expected to be part of the game. How popular you or your guild-mates are may actually matter in this game. So be nice.
The main way of leveling in TERA is questing. There is a conquest line of quests that follow the main storyline, and other less important quests that offer needed and decent experience. The quest system is fluid and will allow you to move throughout the game's zones with ease. Mobs also offer decent experience, and simply grinding is not unheard of. There are several types of crafting and gathering within TERA, there is an auction house and even personal shops.
TERA runs on the Unreal 3 engine, and possesses perhaps some of the most beautiful graphics ever offered in an MMO. The game can be set to run decently on lower-end machines, but it is of course recommended that the game be played with sufficient hardware to fully experience TERA's beautiful visuals.

AMAN
http://www.tera-online.com/node/78
Enslaved by conquering giants and freed by the goddess Kaia with the help of the castanics, the amani value freedom above all things. They are naturally watchful and slow to trust, but having earned their trust, you will have it until you prove faithless. You really don't want to do that.
Amani are direct in speech and action, honest, candid, and somewhat imperious. They are usually respected, often admired, sometimes feared. No one doubts they will say what they mean, do what they say, and make life very hard on their enemies.
Created by the god Amarun, the amani are fierce soldiers. They once fought a protracted war with the devas (and their goddess Zuras), which only ended when Karas (patron of the elves) enforced a peace and forbade both gods from interfering further with their battles. Weakened by the conflict, they were absorbed and enslaved by the expanding empire of the giants while Amarun looked on helplessly.
Eventually freed from slavery by the intervention of the gods Kaia, Lok, and the ingenuity of the castanics, the amani learned quickly the value of cooperation. They came to the defense of Essenia during the incursion of the high elves, and later joined the fledgling Valkyon Federation during the Argon war, dedicating themselves wholeheartedly to the principles of racial unity.

BARAKA
http://www.tera-online.com/node/79
The baraka are related to giants, but in turning their backs on the giants' wars of conquest, they avoided their progenitor’s doom on the Day of Flame. Baraka value knowledge of all kinds. They maintain libraries of the accumulated learning of their own people, as well as that of all the world’s races, in every city where they make their homes.
Despite their gentle nature and generally pacifistic philosophy, it would be a great error to suppose baraka are weaklings, for their other great hunger is for balance. Balancing mind and body means that every young baraka learns the arts of combat alongside the arts of knowledge. They are distinguished among all the world’s races for their fierce defense of the weak.
The race of giants was created by Tithus. The baraka clan had gone their own way long since, having chosen to walk a more peaceful path in the pursuit of knowledge. When the gods punished the giants for their ambitions with total annihilation on the Day of Flame, the baraka were spared. Since that time they've been welcome guests in the lands of many other races. The amani have traditionally kept their distance from the baraka because of the unhappy history between amani and giants, but with the new spirit of friendship fostered by the federation, even those old wounds are beginning to heal.
THE BARAKA CAN ONLY BE MALE.

CASTANICS
http://www.tera-online.com/node/82
Castanics inspire more conflicting emotions than any other race in the world of TERA. Clever and skilled, castanics are also opportunistic and hot-tempered. A castanic never forgets a friend and never abandons an ally. They're also notoriously quick-tempered and have a tendency to decapitate first and accept apologies second.
The clan is famous for the skill of its artisans and crafters. They are also adept merchants—cunning negotiators who love the interplay of bargaining, and strive to come out on top in every deal.
Originally one of the clans of devas, the castanics fled their pitiless goddess and the necromantic overlords of the devan empire. Since that time, Clan Castanic has forged its own destiny, lived by its own dark code of honor, and carved out its place in history. Betrayed into creating an artifact that caused the death of a beloved god, most castanics have spurned the gods entirely, believing them not to be worth the trouble they cause, and that those who depend upon the gods are too cowardly to seize their own destiny. A small minority revere the amani goddess Kaia.

HIGH ELVES
http://www.tera-online.com/node/83
The elves once lived lives dedicated to venerating nature and the gods. The "Children of Karas" maintained their forest homes in peace, but that changed when the conflicts of immortals destroyed their civilization and split a proud and powerful race into two factions.
Now, only the "High Elves" remain. After three thousand years of war, they withdrew from the world after a devastating loss against a force of allied races. This century of seclusion ended when the gates of Allemantheia opened to refugees fleeing the argon invasion, and the world took notice when the gates stayed open and produced an army to fight for the lives of all mortal races.
Though the elves bought their seat at the Valkyon Federation table with the blood of soldiers, many do not trust the "New Way," believing that their walled desert city holds many more secrets, and that the elves never gave up their conquering ways.
A hundred years ago, the high elves invaded the human territory of Essenia. The amani, poporis, and baraka stood with the humans, and the elves were forced to abandon their conquest. It had been three thousand years since they had lost a war, and this defeat reverberated through the elven culture in a way thirty centuries of victories had not. They formed a new strategy of accommodation to the changes sweeping through the world, and embraced membership in the Valkyon Federation.

HUMANS
http://www.tera-online.com/node/28
Cursed by their god to wander without a homeland, the humans turned their adversity to advantage by using their long exile as a learning experience. They studied the culture and crafts of other races, and forged their own destiny without guidance from their neglectful deity. Now, as creators of the Valkyon Federation, they are admired and respected by all the nations of the world for their role in bringing together the coalition that will defeat the argons and return the world to peace at last.
The race of humans was created by Gidd, who turned his back on them when they petitioned him for a homeland. When the first humans conspired to steal Gidd's priceless treasures, he cursed them to wander forever. As the Divine War drew to a close, the curse on the humans lifted. Velik, goddess of the hunt, took pity on the humans and granted them the homeland they’d long been denied. Their capital today is the beautiful city of wheels she created for them.

POPORIS
http://www.tera-online.com/node/28
The popori nation is made up of two distinct races. The elin—small female humanoids—were created by the goddess Elinu out of her own divine essence. The popori are non-human beasts awakened to sentience by the elin. Both are small, and accustomed to not being taken seriously. Both are curious, candid, uncompromising, and utterly ferocious. Both are resolute and tenacious defenders of nature. They are quick to learn, and quick to judge. Losing a popori’s respect means you may never get an opportunity to regain it.
The Amanic War created deep scars on the continent of Arun. Elinu—the youngest dream-daughter of the Titan Arun—wept for her father’s pain and determined to protect him. From her own divine essence, she created the elin. When the task proved too much for the elin alone, they in turn awakened animals to create the popori. Together, they have worked to repair, protect, and preserve the world they live in.
Looks like a neat game - too bad there's no armor for female characters.
Yeah it suffers from typical Eastern design failures. That's just the art style though - some people bring up the argument that's simply a game and it doesn't matter, but I really would prefer some more modest clothing for many of the race/class combos. There seems to be very few pieces of gear that female characters won't look like sluts in. :downs:
I thought this game wasn't gonna be that too much anime bunny suit stuff.
I guess i was wrong.
Looks nice, but its Korean.
AKA; Grind central.
Holy fucking shit that looks pretty goddamn awesome. Some of the race's look silly, but awesome nonetheless.
[editline]8th February 2011[/editline]
looks like vindictus but done better
Nice graphics.
But, I bet it'll be a boring grind fest.
Looks kind of decent. Also what the fuck at the furry race...
God I hope you're all wrong, but honestly it probably is going to be that way. Every other aspect looks awesome though.
Will probably be a grindfest. It's part of the Worst Korean gaming culture. They all think its fun to grind there, they're crazy about it.
Males are huge and biff, check
Women are light clothed and tiny, check
Looks nice, but its Korean.

You are terribly wrong. The grind in the Korean version was hilarious. There are many level 50s running around already. It takes less than a month to reach max level. It is not really grindy. North American players are asking for the XP rate to be slower!
I want to try this game out... can't wait for beta, and a invitation.
I want to try this game out... can't wait for beta, and a invitation.
Sign up for the beta, sign up on the forums, and get active. There's absolutely no way you will be invited to the play event in March without being part of the community. It may be a little late for you to join and expect to get in, but the next one will be larger, and if you have good post quality and you're noticed, you could get in.
Looks really good, Hope I can get into it ~:D
Yet another Korean MMO. They've just got to the DX10-11 level of graphics these days.
Yet another Korean MMO. They've just got to the DX10-11 level of graphics these days.
What's wrong with Korean MMOs?
I have to elaborate because I know what you'll respond - I mean, what's wrong with an MMO that was originally developed in Korea? is there something wrong with the geographical location of the game?
No, of course not, you just believe the game will be like all of the other MMOs out of the West that give the idea a bad taste to you. In unbiased defense, the game really steps away from what you may think it could be. There doesn't seem to be any grinding, the gameplay feels solid and polished, the graphics are beautiful, and the entire game is quite unique. A political system doesn't seem like something that would be in regular shitty Korean MMOs, to me.
I'm actually waiting for an MMO that doesn't have "ey ima gurl i got liek BIG TITTIES and NO CLOTHING BUT +55 ARMOR POINTS" shit, I mean nothing against naked skin. But I don't need it in every game on every female character.
I saw people in Guild Wars offering stripping. Seriously?
[editline]9th February 2011[/editline]
Oh god. "ha! heya! he! ha! hy! hu! hi!" If that is the general combat ambience... come on. How can people play without muting the character voices?
I'm actually waiting for an MMO that doesn't have "ey ima gurl i got liek BIG TITTIES and NO CLOTHING BUT +55 ARMOR POINTS" shit, I mean nothing against naked skin. But I don't need it in every game on every female character.

There are titles for the PSP, the PS2 and for the Wii.
There is also one coming out for the 360.
Yeah the oversexed females in video games thing is getting a little annoying. I enjoy attractive characters, but a good example is: I would play a Human female Lancer, but they don't have any armor that I like - almost all of it has open chests, midriffs, and I fear that the final endgame gear is no different. The set on the character creation is really nice, but it still has the unneccessary cleavage.

from Korean open beta.
Rift seems to have more modest outfits for female characters. (or some at least, not really sure)
Too bad Rift isn't very good, in my opinion.
TERA was designed to be a mature game, and yes, they did indeed design it with sex in mind. It certainly doesn't stop me from playing the game, but I just wish I had a choice. Some of it is tasteful, but I rather not always have to wear such items when playing a female character.
I also wouldn't play a Human male, though - they're too big, too unrealistically buff, and since there are no body customization options, you must look like a body builder. I usually kind of create male characters after myself (I'm tall, thin) - but it's impossible to do so in TERA. As for female characters I usually just make them attractive to my eye.
I really don't think the subject is a real "do I subscribe or not?" issue. After playing the game, I rarely noticed what the models were wearing. I'm pretty open to it. Some of it is actually pretty awesome.
I'm not a big fan of Korean MMO's. And I notice that the gameplay is just instances completely avoiding the real gameplay factor of questing and grinding. But like every Korean MMO it ends up in the dictionary under disappointing.

I don't see much point in making a list of people following the game. People always make lists in these megathread things so you could catch up with people or see who plays. If it's some sort of common trend upon release, then sure.
And stop being all "do I want to play - do I not want to play?"
You'll try it no matter what.

Okay, sounds good with the list.
Also, yes, I will play it, but I meant that I'm still undecided on what server I will play on.
Since Frogster has bad rep, and it's in Germany that loves to censor out stuff, even simple stuff like a red pool in League of Legends, they turned it brown.

There are no restrictions on EU players playing on NA servers, or NA players playing on EU servers. Besides the ping, you're good to go. But I played this game with somewhere around 250-300 ping and it still felt pretty solid.
