• Why is video game music better then most other music today?

I swear, nothing gets me more excited then hearing something like the Morrowind theme. Why are all the good musicians moving onto video games? The only artists I've found that can do better then video game music is E.S. Posthumous.
Please compare these two pieces before you disagree.
Yeah those tracks on fallout are great. Shame none of those people know that their music has become even more famous in the 21st century.
This is what I consider music.

One of them contains about as much music as Metal Gear Solid contains gameplay.

How can you forget classics like: It's just that these are for the more sophisticated fans of musical composing, while the mainstream shit like Britney Spears and Justin Bieber is for those who don't actually give a fuck about the music. Game soundtracks need to convey a feeling to you about the situation you are in. For example, remember when in Half-Life 1 you are getting up that elevator, awesome music starts to play and then you go ape shit on those marines with your MP5? Yeah, that music made it all worth it. That's because it had a fast tempo, exhilarating instruments and some rad beats behind it. Combine that with the action on-screen and it was triple the experience it would've been without music.
Unless the music is made from Nintendo or some company that isn't a piece of shit then yes it can be better
OP I think you just hate singing, unless it's some form of gothic choir .
I listen to some European shit like Gogol Bordello or the Pogues. [editline]16th October 2010[/editline]
I like video game music myself because it's sort of meant to provide an ambient mood to anything For instance, you can listen to the above song without really focusing on the music at all so I find videogame music to be great for working as you don't have to focus on the song to appreciate it

Proof that the gaming industry is better at music than most musicians. Sort of how half life did it. "Got the HEV suit? Epic music!"
I opened this thread while listening to some Legend of Zelda music. I have to agree I really like video game music more then other mainstream shit. I guess I just like the ambient feeling of it so I can do other stuff while it plays in the background. But I'm not saying I hate all non-video game music. Its just it makes up the majority of what I listen to. Take music from Mother 3, it fits the mood perfectly from a Monkey delivering packages to the final boss of the game. Its so perfect and really sets the mood. Hell even the Hotel lobby music is awesome. (New pork bossa) (Monkey's Delivery service) (Master Porkey's theme) and my favorite ("Isn't this such a utopia?!") Almost forgot, heres one from fighting the main antagonist force. I hate having to tell people I'm listening to "Videogame music" and more so when they tell me to listen to "real music".
wonder if the op would like this

From what some composers have said, it's because they're given more leeway than in the traditional music or film biz. They also seem keen to throw enough variation into their tracks that they take a long time to get old, if indeed they do. Makes sense when you're probably going to be hearing that track a metric fuckton throughout a game, eh? They're also usually ambient tracks, so you don't have to 'get in the mood' like you sometimes would for metal or other genres. For me, it's mainly because vocals are so rare in VGM. Aside from a few exceptions (Rage, Rap, House), I find them distracting, especially when they're trying too hard. To use a recent-ish example, I can't listen to some otherwise fine pieces like Coldplay's Viva La Vida because of the damned singing. If it wasn't for that, I'd be dandy adding it to my playlist. Since we seem to be posting tracks anyway, Threads of Fate/Dew Prism and Dark Reign deserve all the love they can get (for their music at least; DR2 was weak as a game). I personally prefer Video Game music over most music these days (with some exceptions) Mainly because I love how Video Game music set a mood or atmosphere.
You have no taste in epic music if you rated the Suicide Mission OST dumb.
Music for video games is usually orchestral. If it's not then it probably wasn't originally made for the game. Take Borderland's intro and credits; "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" by Cage The Elephant and "No Heaven" by DJ Champion. Both great songs in my opinion that really worked for the feeling of the game, but weren't technically "video game music." So if you're saying that video game music is better than today's music, you should probably be comparing them to other orchestral pieces. @Novangel I was sad that Mass Effect 2 didn't have an epic song like M4 (Part II) at the end. 'Cause I love that song!
Bionic Commando (the 2009 remake) had some awesome music: The "Beyond Dark Skies" one gives me goosebumps every single time I listen to it.
