Q: What is VAC?
A: VAC is Valve Anti-Cheat. It stops people from editing the game's important dll files and the exe. It is a delayed ban system.
Q: Which games are effected by VAC bans?
A: There are different groups of games you can get VAC banned from:
Goldsrc engine, all half-life games.
Source engine, All Half-Life 2 games and mods, except for Left 4 Dead games, which are in their own category.
Left 4 Dead engine, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
There are other games which use VAC, which are separate categories, such as MW2 and Killing Floor.
If you get VAC banned from one group of games, you can't play on VAC secure servers on the rest of them in that group. If you get banned from CS:S, you can't play on secure servers on TF2, DOD:S, and other hl2 sourcemods. You could, however, play GoldSrc games, and Left 4 Deads.
Q: How does VAC work?
A:
VAC detects changes in the game's important files. If you edit any of the important DLLs, by changing them, or injecting some sort of hack, you will be VAC banned. If a Valve employee catches you doing something that you shouldn't be doing, like exploiting, they can ban you, without the delay.
When you are automatically banned, the ban can take place between a week and months. This is to prevent hackers from knowing if their hacks are undetected. VAC bans are permanent.
Q: What is IS VAC bannable anyway?
A:
Things that are bannable:
Third-party hacks.
Messing with game DLL files or the EXE file.
Injecting code into the hl2.exe process.
Game exploits which a Valve employee deems unfair.
Things that are NOT bannable:
Skins
Models
Sounds
Scripts
Plugins

Why did we need this thread?
Because some people don't know that L4D is separate from other source engine games. Some people don't know that you can be VAC banned from exploits which normally are not VAC bannable.

It's a separate ban system. You can get VAC banned from L4D and L4D2, or HL2 engine.

Yes, you do get VAC banned in GMod from any HL2 game. VAC does not work in GMod, though, despite what Garry says, because I am VAC banned in GMod but can join secure servers fine.
You won't get VAC banned for using any type of cheats in Garry's Mod.

Pretty sure the OP is basing his "you can be banned for exploits" statement on the guy who made a RAGE thread about being VAC'd for using the SourceMod speedhack exploit, which requires (and is an exploit in) SourceMod.
They said that 2 years didn't work, okay, yeah, that's fine. It's only two years.

That's 7 out of 12/13 years? That's over half. How can 5 years not be enough? They can't test that shit.
I still say it's unfair for life banishment.
I am aware of the consequences, but I say remove every vac banned person from the ban list, and instate a new 6 year VAC banning system. This way even if they buy the latest games they can't play them unless someone is stupid enough to host a non-vac server :v:

If you're smart enough to make your own hacks (by coding, not by using stuff like Cheat Engine), as long as you don't share them you are safe.
VAC can only detect what it is taught to detect, they need to know about a hack before they are able to detect it.
Not that I approve of hacking, just from an informative point of view.
Rumor says that some skins can get you banned.

this was the story of how VAC was concieved, by noobs with no skill whining about the occassional hacker that server admins could ban on their own. the creation of vac however created more problems then it fixed.

later that year, he finds himself vac banned.
"WHAT THE FUCK?"
said gamer now pirates all of his pc games.
this as the story of why VAC sucks.
VAC also exponentially increased account hijackings.
"i love this weed man"
a gamer, high on weed, decides to play some cs
after the game, he recieved a message from someone under the username of "VAC Moderator Alex", this user was a player who was VAC banned for hacking, he only had one thought in his mind, hijack a non vac banned account to continue hacking.
VAC moderator Alex: "hello, it appears that your account has been illegally accessed, please provide me with your username and password so we can confirm you are the legitimate user of this account"
the gamer, too high to figure out what to do, provides the credentials
VAC moderator Alex: "OWNED N00B LOL"
the account was hijacked the next day, and 3 months later, when the account was finally reclaimed, the account was VAC banned.
1 gamer whom this happened to hung himself, another gamer whom this happened to now pirates all of his pc games.
this is the story of how VAC increased account hijacking rates.
i hope you guys rate me informative on my huge post about why VAC was valves biggest mistake.

Yes, a skin can, if it isn't a normal edit of a texture file and instead is some kind of strange and malicious .dll edit.

By the way, I'm the guy who got VAC banned by the Valve employee. It wasn't a rage thread as much as it was a "Look, valve VAC bans people manually as well, for exploits"
