Well, I'm going to start this thread off by saying that I am a Cheap-Ass. I will never buy anything unless I have to. I also generally obey the law (you know what I mean) so I was wondering if there was any game out there that was a free alternative to TF2. Pretty much a free FPS with sexy classes. Post your stuff.
(Half-Life 2 Mods are also acceptable.)

-Gang Garrison 2

the closest i can think of is microvolts, but even then there isn't 9 classes (It's like they took a weapon from every class and threw it into one) and its still in closed beta.

I wouldn't suggest attempting to play until Open Beta, the netcode is destroying the game. It's also extremely different comparing to TF2.
To be honest, the only TF2 is TF2. If you don't want to buy it or can't buy it, then you're out of luck.

Just go out and collect hats IRL. Same experience as TF2.
If you have at least 5 bucks, you can get Team Fortress: Classic.
It's only 5 bucks, not as "great" as TF2 is, but it'll do you good I guess.

Though classless, Teeworlds is one of the funnest free games I've ever played.
Honestly, I don't think their is any real alternative to Team Fortress 2. TF2, on it's own, is an incredible one of a kind experience in my opinion. You can't really have a shooter as intuitive as Team Fortress 2 anywhere else.
