Right now, if you buy a game from Steam, finish it and don't want it, well, you can...delete it. You can't go trade it in. But there are whispers that the digital purchase giant is considering implementing such a scheme.
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, taking a break from wildly speculating about the future of the industry, has actually gone on record to say he's heard Valve will soon be allowing those who download a game to trade it in.
"Steam is phenomenal, it's a great service," he told NowGamer. "Steam gives gamers enough other stuff so that they don't resent the fact they can't trade in their games. And you know, name all the Steam games that you've purchased that you've traded back in to somebody else for credit. Steam's about to let you do that supposedly, you know like trade and exchange, but they're going to take a fee from it."
Interesting. At the moment, if you delete a game you've purchased, you may not get anything back in return for offloading it, but you can download it again in the future. Giving consumers the option of forsaking that convenience in exchange for credit towards future purchases would, we'd imagine, go down a treat with most of Steam's regular users.
If they did implement it, I'd absolutely love it.
it would be even cooler if you could trade game licenses to other players on your friends list

Hey, that would be very cool, but I can't see it ever working well. Valve would never do it.
Anyway, this would definitely be cool.
Didn't Greenman gaming already do this?
Nice. I have a shitton of games I'd do that with.
I'd never do this. I don't like to trade games in.
Buy a pack of games for cheaper than individual value, trade in games.

valve will probably implement a system that notices if you buy a game from a pack or not
buy mw2 cd key for 20 bucks, flip it for 50 dollars on steam wallet.

I thought about that then got sad. :c
I imagine it wouldn't give you full credit for trading in the game. Otherwise I could spend $60 and, over time, play almost every game on steam.
Sounds like a great idea

If that is the third surprise then Ep3 will come in the year 2500.
Next up, "used" digital downloads!

Kotick would be so pissed :v:
This is a very good thing.
Finally, a way to get rid of Section 8 and Beat Hazard, among other "bought because they were on sale, aw crap they suck" games in my library. Hope it's true, though it would be a big move for Valve.
[editline]14th October 2010[/editline]
Not to mention they'd have to negotiate it with all the devs/publishers Steam does business with.
I wonder if we could take advantage of the Freebie shit like HL2:DM?
The free shit would probably be worth like $1
Though this is interesting, I don't think I could trade in any of my games. I could trade-in my Morrowind GOTY only to have a hunger for it a few days later...
That's pretty awesome. I'd probably trade in the singleplayer games I've beaten, like Mirror's Edge.
I'll trade in 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures because I got it because of a fuckup so it only cost 14c :v:
That would be awesome but I don't think it would make much business sense
i will trade in ricochet

Weird, Beat Hazard's a completely awesome game and in no way sucks like you claim.
His opinion != yours.

Wrong thread brah.
How come?
Anyone want Killing Floor?
That would be awesome, I've a load of games I'll never play. Most of the ID Superpack and the THQ pack I won't ever play, I just bought them for the Doom games, RF:G and a few others.
