Activision strongly considers monthly bill for portion of Multiplayer
Consumers are used to paying $60 each for videogames that run on consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now the publisher behind the industry's biggest videogame franchise— "Call of Duty"—is about to find out whether it can get them to pay a monthly bill, too.
Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.
Activision executives said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix Inc. movie subscription. Portions of the service will be free, including features inspired by Facebook Inc. that will let "Call of Duty" players meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests.

Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations at Sony's U.S. games division, said only a few games have the audience loyalty and size to support a subscription service like Call of Duty Elite. Mr. Dyer said he is "very confident" other publishers will follow Activision's lead. "There's money to be made there," he said.
Unfortunately it's true, all the 12 year olds will continue to stay loyal to Call of Duty and pay as much money as Activision wants. I'm so sick of Activision, MW2 was when all the greediness started, but this just takes the cake.

i'm not getting MW3 if it turns into a pay to play game
I mean think about the shit you have to pay for already
Using an Xbox as an example:
Xbox 360: $200
Internet: About $40/mo for decent stuff
Xbox Live Gold: 12 months is about $40
The game itself: $60
Pay to play: say $8/mo like the Netflix price they mentioned
A mappack: $15
Total that up... you'd have paid $363 for the game. For just the game itself, it's still $83. For one fucking game. That has less content than some of the $20 shitty games you can get off Steam.
Fuck you, Activision.
According to Joystiq it isn't pay to play online, it's just an extra service right now that will grant you the map packs and keep track of your stats.
You're still an idiot if you get it though

I have an idea,
nothing!
and yet millions will sell.
Yeah. I remember when the gaming industry had advances, new gameplay mechanics, increasing graphics, that sort of shit. Then consoles came around. They got better and better until recently.
Let's take a look at some shit.

Over these past 6-7 years, things have gotten a little shinier. That's all. Before that, we were making HUGE leaps and bounds with technology and gameplay.
The only way I'd get MW3 now is if it was really really good and actually had innovation. But that's not going to happen.

We still are, it's just that we started out from nothing so it's less noticeable.
Creativity and gameplay was drowned in the sea of "better grafix pls" crowd. Graphics aren't going to increase beyond this current state as they've pretty much got realism down. Remember when this was realistic for its time? (In terms of graphics)

Look back at it now, it had what we needed, gameplay. Now? Now everything needs to shine like its been dipped in oil to be considered good. :sigh:
Fuck off Activision. All you want is money. You don't care about the consumer. All you care is what money the consumer forks over to your greedy hands.

That's halfway what i was trying to say, we started out with shitty graphics with really fun gameplay because people wanted to play those games, then graphics got better so the need for better gameplay went down, and now we have neither decent graphics nor gameplay for a more expensive price. It's ridiculous.

Considering the "staple of modern gaming" has been on the same engine for 4 games in a row, I don't think so.
I mean we do have Crysis 2 but did that really improve on the first?

Oh god, I love Deus Ex, I played through it the first time during last summer, and I say it has still been a better experience than any other FPS I've played since.
I don't care to be honest, I haven't played MW2 in forever. My ONLY concern in the matter is that it'll spread to games I actually give a fuck about. Then i'll be pissed. As it is the CoD franchise is already a lost cause.

The flaw of Crysis is that it prides itself on having an extremely pretty landscape and junk at the cost of having a majority of players not being able to play it at a steady framerate and questionable gameplay. Sure it looks nice, but the gameplay is subpar. Crysis 2 just made things shinier.

I bought it last summer and I've played it 7 times :unsmith:
But it kills me a little more inside that gaming is turning into this. Movies started out the same way: Made to entertain and amaze people, turned into something to get money off of. Pretty much all art forms, too: Started off to get a message across or for the artists to express themselves, and now people are selling paint splatters for $7000 a pop to make a quick buck. It's disgusting.

Crysis was pretty generic other than the graphics.

Eh Activision doesn't really claim to. Case in point

Banksy auction where the text says "I can't believe you morons actually buy this shit." Sums up my feelings on quite a few things in the Video Games business.

I've yet to beat either crysis, played both. However I find myself constantly going back to games like Dwarf Fortress or tycoon games. Sometimes I'll play some text based games. Graphics mean very little to me nowadays. I'm all about gameplay.

Even though I've only beaten it once, I actually found Crysis to have a lot of re-playability. I usually stop once I get to the aliens but killing the koreans is fun.
Didn't play the second at all
Honestly, I love Call of Duty; it's a fun party game and I seem to be the only person in the world who thinks the campaigns are epic and well-made. So yes, I will probably buy MW3. But a subscription service? No way in hell.
Wow, I'm so surprised that a company that has consistently proven itself to be incredibly greedy due to it's remarkably blind core fanbase is strongly considering doing something incredibly greedy due to it's remarkably blind core fanbase.
Now to write 20 paragraphs explaining how little we have progressed technologically as if Call of Duty is the only game in existence or something instead of just ignoring it and letting it inevitably die out in a few years while paying attention to actually important games that might do something to advance games in the right direction of storytelling and/or technology & Gameplay.
No.

you're just as bad for writing that post and if you have any common sense I shouldn't have to explain why

Anyone have that HA HA HA, OH WOW picture?
A monthly sub for a game that uses someone in the lobby as a host, and not any dedicated servers? For any game other than an MMO that would be absurd, even with dedicated servers

Literally just searched for ha ha ha oh wow on google
I'm literally only turning to look in the direction of CoD just to see if they set examples for other companies which I hope to God they don't.
