A new interpretation of the classic Rainbow Six, the tough-as-nails tactical shooter that asked gamers to carefully plan out the nuance of a breach like a choreographed dance, is in the works, a source familiar with the unannounced Ubisoft shooter tell Kotaku.
We've also heard that the game will in many ways be a departure from the sameness found in Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel, and a return to what helped separate the shooter from others of its ilk.
It's unclear if the in-development game will be shown at E3.
The original Rainbow Six is more tactical and focused on stealth than on weapons. Before each mission, in those early games, players were asked to view a briefing and then build a team, pick their weapons and equipment and finally create waypoints that the secondary members of the team would follow. Once the mission started, players had only control of one team member at a time.
Rainbow Six will be a far more story-driven game than previous iterations of the Tom Clancy branded title. The game is meant to take a step in a different direction, telling a bigger, much more gritty cinematic story than previous versions of the game.
In this still-to-be-titled Rainbow Six, players will be tasked with stopping a homegrown terrorist group operating in America. The group, fed up with the greed of Wall Street and the government that acts to protect them, decides to target New York City.
While the gameplay is based on some classic Rainbow Six mechanics, there is a brand new cover system that takes you out of the first-person perspective and into the third.
A new icon-rich graphics style helps to highlight members of your team during a mission and other pertinent information.
Contacted Thursday, Ubisoft declined to comment.
This could be quite good, I hope we get scenarios where the terrorist take over a skyscraper/office block and we have to repel down to different floors.

But please take it back to stealth and tactics.

Oh god a choice between a rooftop and an underground insertion would be even awesomer

Breach in a floor, find a lift shaft. Scale down it, sneak in through lift doors.
Damn it. I got excited thinking we'd be getting a new cover system with none of the third person bullshit, but apparently we're not.

"No, it will be nothing but a maze of ambiguously placed *cover* and doorways"

a cover system in First Person wouldn't really work.
They'd either have to remove the cover system completely or make the game completely third person.

Can't wait till RO2: HOS resets the standards of cover systems. None of that third person bullshit.
I hope the PC port will be more decent than Vegas 2's
UH OH
The third person cover system for Vegas was also pretty much there because of the customization system too.
I am one of those people who loved the old Rainbow Sixes and thought Vegas 1 & 2 were petty in comparison.
bigger, much more gritty cinematic story
That plus the image does not bode well to me. :frown:
It looks like it's taking a Splinter Cell Conviction route. I loved Conviction, but you guys know what I mean.

Looks like it's taking the ever-so-popular NYC invasion, too.

No one plays R6 games for the story.
Please for god's sake PLEASE have an option for subtitles. The reason I didn't understand what was going on in RSV2 was because I could barely hear what the characters were saying.
Other than that, keep the customisation similar, I enjoyed looking like an armoured ninja.
grainnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Well there's nothing wrong with story..
I never played the Old Rainbow Six games but if the transition between the old and new games is anything like the transition between Ghost Recon 1 and GRAW then I can imagine why people would be pissed off. Still though, being story driven isn't bad as long as the gameplay is good and traditional.
I guess I'll keep sticking with Raven Shield then.

Is it me or did anyone else find stealth really difficult in Vegas 2?
Is it me or did anyone else find stealth really difficult in Vegas 2?
It was stupidly hard. They could spot you from a mile away, then if you tried to 'hide' they'd send every mother fucker after you.
When I saw the thread I was like "Oh great they are gonna continue milking my favorite series". But then
"We've also heard that the game will in many ways be a departure from the sameness found in Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel, and a return to what helped separate the shooter from others of its ilk.
:woop:
Putting a lot of salt on this one.

Stealth?
More like kill one guy stealthily and the entire group of the terrorists with a mile fucking radius storms you.

No, Cover in first person would be awesome, peaking around corners, and no more corner camping where you just get popped by someone you can't even see.
Killzone 2&3 did it fine from what I hear.
Isn't the new Red Orchestra including a first person cover system too?
Isn't the new Red Orchestra including a first person cover system too?
yep
Why do you need a cover system in first person, what happened to the old Q and E and crouching and standing? Is that too primitive?
Sounds good, The Story sounds quite different. I like it.

Was great, it worked fine, just got phased out somewhere down the line, damn shame really.
they already said it won't be like Vegas 1 and 2 "We've also heard that the game will in many ways be a departure from the sameness found in Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel, and a return to what helped separate the shooter from others of its ilk."
but i guess it's too much to ask people to read the OP
oh and by the way, how is a NYC invasion (which this isn't even an actual invasion, it's a terrorist group) "common"
just because 1 video game did it doesn't make it common

Consoles don't have enough buttons for leaning.
that, and leaning just adds to the 1 pixel showing, but can still shoot the enemy just fine, style of gameplay, which outside of singleplayer, isn't great.
