• When will DVD/Discs for PC games die?

I was thinking, with the release of USB3, and USB3 flash drives, couldn't retailers just sell games in flash drives? It takes a lot less space and a lot more portable. Of course this is when USB3 is widely adopted.
When there's a better option that isn't too expensive to manufacture it will be replaced.
And then retail games will cost $200 in Australia as opposed to $100
Usually after wide adoption the price would go down. I think right now, a 8GB flash-drive is around $10 where I live.
Well it's already going pretty strong on the digital side. I'd say we give retail another couple of years at the most. My local gaming shops don't carry PC games anymore anyway. I usually have to shop at a bigger store like Best Buy.
You could probably get 8gb in DVDs for a fraction of that.
You could probably get 8gb in DVDs for a fraction of that.
But the speed of flash drive is faster and it physically takes up less room. But like Alyx said, it will all go digital.
I'd prefer a shelf full of DVD Cases than a shelf of USB Drives that I would most likely end up losing. But heck, that's just me.
Retail games in USB drives would be cool simply for the fact that they could be shaped different depending on what game is released on it. It would be much easier to spot the game you're looking for if you'd know the shape of the USB drive.
I think SD cards are more likely than flash drives.
I think they will go over to bluray discs.
I think all video games should go digital like steam and be sold online. Not only will you save the environment and the space of your cabinet, you don't have to worry about finding the game should you wish to reinstall again
When something better is made? DVDs are ridiculously cheap, they are portable, everyone has players, and one disc usually has enough capacity for any game. There is no reason to change.

They're not going to switch to another 'hard' form of storage. It'll just be all downloads in the future
I hope discs are used till I meet my grave. Steam is nice and all but I honestly really prefer hearing my PC do the 'ol disc spinning when installing a game, maybe checking some screenshots or listening to the music that's sometimes on the installer.
I went into my local game shop the other day and the PC section had about 9 games in.. I think Digital downloads have already destroyed the PC hardcopy market..
I don't think DVDs will be going any time soon, publishers will simply use more and more discs instead of risking losing a large portion of the market until Blu-ray drives become commonplace

How about No Thanks, i prefer buying a disc so the game is mine and i can access it on my premises. Imagine if your one account got banned/hacked/whatever and you could wave goodbye to years of content. If you're gonna counter this with "derp, keep a backup" then why the fuck even go digital at all. Wave goodbye to game purchases and ownership. It'll be rentals and limited licences you have to re-buy every month. I say, don't give them the means to pull bullshit, Steam may be genuine and honest (god bless valve for that) but Activision, EA and Ubisoft sure as shit aren't and wouldn't hesitate to pull a bullshit "re-buy" heist on our collective to be former-gamer asses. /paranoia
I like having boxes along my shelves, its like displaying what i bought rather than looking at a list on steam.
I like having boxes along my shelves, its like displaying what i bought rather than looking at a list on steam.
to be honest I like this idea, I'm just too lazy to walk down to the shops and buy games.

Flash is many times more expensive in comparison. I wouldn't be suprised if some companies tried selling games on flash drives, but the majority will definitely stick to optical discs. And USB 3 has exactly nothing to do with all this. Do you even have any idea what you're talking about? I agree with you, I would like to regain my right to have the game regardless of backup and such. It's not even that, all games won't be nostalgia no more. Collecting the games will become something of non-existance. I don't want companies to do this, please remain with the discs and just improve them.
I think they will go over to bluray discs.
I think they will go Digital
When companies stop using dvd's?
I haven't used a CD/DVD in forever. People still use those? I just buy all my games on steam, and back up all my stuff on flash drives.

Get banned and you lose the whole game AND they sue you. Talk about getting raped. And what would you, Facepunch do if Valve went bankrupt over night and forgot about their promised countermeassure that would enable us to keep our games? What if any of the other Digital Distributors went down? I love boxes... GAME boxes that is. Buy online, receive by package. No shipment fees either.
Eww, cartridge media for PC games? No thanks, son. [editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
And what would you, Facepunch do if Valve went bankrupt over night
Stopped reading there because Valve are pretty much rolling in money.
