• Nerf Arena Blast - The strangely addicting kid's FPS receiving a revival

http://www.nerfarena.net/ What the fuck is this? Nerf Arena Blast is an old game (dating back to around the 1990's) that, at the time, had potential for being a good FPS. It, in my opinion, was one of the few FPS's that at least tried to force your participation in battles that went on around the map, instead of just finding a sniper spot and camping; you got maybe 100 points for killing someone, but you got easily twice and a half that, more for killing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-placers, if you picked up the lozenge they dropped. Why should I care about it? Because the creators of ArenaBlast have given the game over to a community member to be improved upon and "fixed." Said community member has started a website, and a now official updater. All the pieces have fallen into place; all it needs is a community. I can't find this in any retail stores! Why? You know when I said the creators of ArenaBlast gave the 'game dev' title to a community member? That's because its copyright expired, and the game was basically unknown of in that year's definition of 'today's generation.' The mapping program crashes when I start it! / Nerf crashes after the intro movies! / Nerf outright refuses to start! The game was made for Windows 98. Of course it will have problems. Windows 7 seems to have the best chance at running the game right now if you start it without any emulation options and direct3D support, but I can't guarantee it. You only need to run the game once, then download and run the Community Pack v2.5(here) (and enable HD rendering) to fix Nerf and associated mapper so it runs properly. Don't even try using Nerf's 'safe mode' (VNerf) unless you want a game missing any form of nice looking graphics. Where's all the servers?! We have no dedicated servers. Nerf has an option for running dedicated servers, though - and the bots are intelligent enough to present a little challenge from time to time. Wait - this looks a lot like the Source engine! Indeed it does - when I revisited the game after almost 10 years, my first thought was "This looks like the Source engine!" Even the mapping program behaves and feels a little like Hammer. However, it's not. Nerf runs off of a modified version of the Unreal Tournament engine - in fact, if you poke around in a few INIs, you'll find options for enabling UT's menus. Hello! Anybody there? Yes - all 5 of us. This game is in desperate need of people to breath life back into it. I know this sounds like a plea, but I assure you it's not. This game is just fun and highly modifyable, (try this in the console for endless fun, once you install the community pack: open PM-CW8.nrf) enough so to the point there are at least 30 mods and around 200 maps.
What?
errrrrr uhhhhh what are you talking about :v: (I need to learn to research from Wikipedia...)
Lol.

Wait - this looks a lot like the Source engine! Nerf runs off of a modified version of the Unreal Tournament 2004 engine
Double lol.
Oh my God. This fucking game. nostaalgiiaaaaa
I loved this game. Also, it used the ORIGINAL Unreal Tournament engine, that's the one dating from 1999. This game rocked my world. It's not as childish as you might think - the arenas are clever and the hub world looks amazing. It's basically UT99 without the violence. [editline]1st June 2011[/editline] Also the weapons are awesome.

I love the space stage, the one with the asteroids. It's the best.
I love the space stage, the one with the asteroids. It's the best.
Nah, the Barracuda levels underwater were way more awesome than that.
My personal favorite level was, well, any level where the TripleStrike was easily accessible.
I run the community over at nerfarena.net, and I'd like to clear a few things up... Modifying values in your ini (configuration settings) rarely (if ever) breaks the game and would never require a reinstall of any kind. It is generally thought that the engine NAB runs on is a modified/patched version of the Unreal engine, in other words it is halfway between Unreal and UT, leaning more towards the gameplay of UT (though single player campaign-like games can and have been made; see Infiltration). We have one pretty constant server right now, he just needs to update it to the latest version. By the time you read this he probably already will be up to date and running again. I have plans with another member for another 24/7 server, and I do host a spontaneous server, so there's still plenty to play online. NerfEd, an Unreal editor client made specifically for Nerf, runs exactly the same as the original UnrealEd. Come on, its ten times more intuitive than Hammer. :P Don't open CW7, open CW8, its the latest version and runs better. But anyway, there's literally a thousand maps that I'm constantly bug-fixing with dozens of gametypes and minigames and modded weapons galore. Its good fun and younger siblings won't complain that they can't play with you, though I can't be held responsible if they cry when they don't win. True story. The game runs fine on all Windows OS's. The only time I have ever had to do anything special to the game to get it to run was on a 64 bit OS. We've got forums too, so any technical support issues you may have can be quickly and easily solved. Trust me, I've seen every error there is to see. So come on over if you'd like, you can find the game for five dollars on places like Amazon, or some other online stores. Do us all a favor and try to acquire it legally. It is worth the five bucks, you pay more than that for the DLC of newer games and the box art is literally hilarious. Well worth it for the nostalgia in my opinion.
Fuck yessssssss. I remember playing this game against bots before there was anything called broadband internet! :buddy:
So if the copyright has expired, this is abandonware? Someone get a download link all up in this bitch then.

Edit: I will edit the link out if I'm asked to, though. It IS being sold in a few places, and it's cheaper - or the same price as - a copy of Garry's Mod... Anyway, Amazon sells copies for $8-$10.
I had this game, then my stupid 13 years old self lost it. Fuck you past me. I still have the case, that beautiful orange case with anime chicks and dudes in the cover holding Nerf guns.
The name intrigues me. The name is pretty much the most fun I'll ever be having with anything Nerf-related (as in, those toy guns) though, so I'm outta here.
(as in, those toy guns) though.
It's really only called Nerf because violence (blood, gibs, that kind of thing) has been removed. There's still explosions, spikes etc.
Oh God, played the demo for this quite a bit back in the day. So much fun.
Oh God, played the demo for this quite a bit back in the day. So much fun.
The Championship arena is funner then the rest of the game, because it's basically like Metal Gear Solid - leap out into the middle unarmed and you will die period. The bots have far more skill in this arena then any other arena, because they actually try to team up - until their target is dead.
I sure am seeing a lot of 0s for people online.

I remember this was my first game I ever played. My dad set me up with a game with bots; I thought I was playing with other people. At the end when I won the game everyone was dancing and I was like "woah they're all dancing"
Holy shit Holyshitholyshitholyshit I remember this, I just couldn't recall the name.
I sure am seeing a lot of 0s for people online.
Those widgets are broken, I have to talk to the guy who wrote them.
Ahh, we used to have copies of this at my family's internet cafe. Shit was fun for LAN parties.
Ahh, we used to have copies of this at my family's internet cafe. Shit was fun for LAN parties.
Until a drunk guy walked in and demanded to play. 'SHIT! FUCK YOU STOP KILLING ME!!'

I can't seem to get it to work, it keeps saying I need to insert a CD. would I have to get the shit to get a mountable version of it?
I can't seem to get it to work, it keeps saying I need to insert a CD. would I have to get the shit to get a mountable version of it?
Find the line "CdPath=D:" in your Nerf.ini and delete it. alternatively... Run the CP once with ONLY the NO CD patch option, then run NAB once then run the CP with all the other options you want.
Chex Quest will always be my favorite blatant advertising game.
