• HOWTO: Quake III Arena on x64 WinNT

Quake III players with a steam version will find no use of this post. Heard about "Quake III: Arena / Team Arena not installing on 64-bit machines"? This is bullshit. The reason why this happens is indeed because 64-bit versions of Windows do not support running 16-bit binaries. The truth, however, is that Quake III Arena and its expansion is a regular 32-bit program. The only "16 bit" part is the stupid autorun file on the CD, which launches DEMO32.EXE and passes in the install file parameter to be QIII.DBD. Method 1: If you MUST have a classic QIII/Q3TA installation Instead of launching SETUP.EXE, just run DEMO32.EXE and a file open dialog should appear. Point it to QIII.DBD on the CD. Done. You should now be on your way to installing Quake III. After using this method, I had a properly installed Q3 1.11 (I would recommend patching your Quake III to 1.32, though). For Quake III Team Arena, follow the exact same procedure (make sure you have QIII installed first, though). The only difference is that the DemoShield data file is called Q3TA.DBD Remember to apply the 1.32 point release AFTER installing both Q3A and Q3TA. The official 1.32 point release is available from the official ID Software site - www.idsoftware.com Method 2: Using ioQuake3 There is an engine update called ioQuake3. It's less buggy and more efficient than classic Q3 1.32 Install ioQuake3 first (http://ioquake3.org/get-it/) and then from the same page, grab the data installer as well. It will unpack your CD for you. Hope this helps the original non-steam Quake III fans out there. Please not that this post is in no way "warez". You must be a legal owner of a Q3A CD and/or a Q3TA CD.
When I installed Quake 3 again recently on Win7 x64, I just ran the setup.exe in the "Quake3" folder.
Or play Quake Live.
Or play Quake Live.
In my opinion, it just doesn't have the same feeling as Q3A did, also mods and fan/community maps unlike Quake Live.
I still play this with my friends over LAN every so often. I'd love to play with some Facepunchers sometime.

I never really got to play many matches on Q3A online, did loads of botmatches, but it was still fun.
