Before you ask, Kutta's a programmer with a crazy surname, who led the PS3 port of Source.
A quick summary:

They unapologetically dodge all Half-Life questions. When mentioning the next game off-hand, however, they always say "Episode 3".

Valve are working on bringing Steam services to mobile platforms, while thinking of what type of game they could make on those platforms that isn't either a bad console port or a clone of FreeCell.

No movies or e-books on Steam - That's Netflix and Amazon's job. They did try convincing the Audiosurf guy to work on something that would "make music more interesting" with them, though...

Portal 2 Mod SDK is leaving beta soon. No plans for releasing the mod source code, though.

It would be very easy for Valve to open-source the Goldsrc engine, but based on past history they're worried it'd make it easier for hackers to ruin online play. Never say never, though.

No news on Portal 2 DLC. Go bug Chet about that.

Portal 2 ARG was a success in that everyone involved had lots of fun and it wasn't a bureaucratic clusterfuck.

Bringing together a bunch of communities - an ARGcon? - would be more exciting than a Valvecon where everyone stares at "the tables where Episode 3 isn't".

Negative effects of PSN downtime won't be known for a while, but it's basically bad for all digital distributors as it shakes consumer confidence.

Gabe wants to tackle hardware and "improve the whole consumer experience".

News on comp-play features for DOTA2 by year's end.

Kutta worked on DirectX, so he talks a bit about DX10 and 11.

The origins of the Half-Life crowbar: It was just a realistic, believable melee weapon, not something macho.

Shout your ideas for Valve merch at Arsenio and they might get made!

Gabe's learning to be a machinist.

They should release an old build from 2000 before Half-Life 1.1 was released. This update went from the Quakeworld netcode to Valve's lag compensation netcode. Doing this won't only make it harder to hack in multiplayer, but it will also be easier to merge with Quake!
I just hope they invest their money which they've gotten from Steam and Hats and TF2 gimmicks wisely.
So far, I don't know what to think. Portal 2 advertising burned a lot of money I'd imagine.
What about the development of the next generation Half-lives and the likes? :saddowns:
Read it all, thanks a lot OP this was quite interesting!
Thanks for sharing

Make a portal device for us, Gabey.
They mentioned Episode 3 every time they referenced the next game?
Naw, that can't be right.

It is. My favorite part was where he regretted saying that they were moving away from single player games. Turns out, that's not what he meant at all, he said that he was only trying to say that he wants to make single player games more engaging. Read the transcript, that bit's really early on, as is all the HL2:EP3 question dodging.

Hell I bet he is related to the families of Shoota, Smasha and Loota.
obviously not doing jackall on any next installment of half life. All their time and energy is on other things.
I don't see how that's "obviously" the case. I don't think that's the case at all.
All they've done is simply not answer questions about it, and look at us... We each have our own unique theory that is based entirely on what we think they're saying. I don't think they've even said a single thing about EP3 other than they're referring to it as EP3, and not HL3. That's ALL WE KNOW. Yet somehow everyone is bloody CONVINCED that obviously [insert your own theory here].
Then we each talk about our theories as facts, completely oblivious that our imaginations conjured what we think we know. Sooner or later, someone reads someone else's theory, assumes it's truth, then becomes either excited, or disheartened, and/or integrates this new fiction into their own.
It's ALL speculation. We know nothing. The sooner we recognize this, and stop trying to insert fictional EP3 facts into places where there are none, the calmer we'll all be.
PC17: "You've said previously Gabe that you've moved beyond the episodic model. As such there’s two
specific camps in the community: the “Episode Three“ camp and the “Half-Life 3” camp. Which
camp are you in?"
Gabe: "I'm in the “Entertainment as a Service” camp I guess, which just lets me dodge
the issue totally"
:v:
" We’d just rather continue
not talking about Half-Life 2: Episode Three more than not finish open sourcing Gold-Source"
:v::v:
Yeah. That's all they've ever said, really. We know nothing other than they're not talking. We can speculate on why they're not talking; my insignificant opinion is that they have something to hide, or else they would not dodge questions, but again, there's no proof of that.
“Let’s all stand around and look at the tables where Episode 3 isn’t.”
— Gabe Newell, on the idea of a Valve convention.
Can Gabe please be every gamer's dad? I think Gabe would be the best dad.

Actually Portal 2's advertising probably wasn't as expensive as you think seeing as it was all done in house without the use of an advertising agency like most companies.
I read machinist as masochist...
