Hello, Everyone.
I'm not too sure how to word this, but here it goes. I've never played pen and paper rpg before, but I think I know some of the basics. I am also a fan of the Warhammer 40k Universe. I've heard of people playing these rpgs and I'm not sure which one to get. I have some friends that said they would play. I know of two rpgs: Dark Heresy and Deathwatch. Which one should I get? Are there any others?
I Have just been informed that there is also Rogue Traders.

There's three WH40k pen and paper RPGs that I know of. Rogue Traders, Dark Heresy and Deathwatch. From what I've heard, Dark Heresy and Deathwatch are about space marines and Rogue Traders is about (you guessed it) rogue traders.
I believe Dark Heresy is the most popular one and it's the one I've been wanting to buy for a while. I'll keep an eye on this thread.
Cool, thanks for the info. You bet I'm gonna be watching this thread!
Most people here aren't gonna be knowledgeable about table top games, especially a money sink one like Warhammer 40k. But, your best bet is to check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000_Roleplay.
Well, I'm hopeful that the few who know what it is can give me some help. Thanks for the link. I think I'm leaning more towards Deathwatch.
Darh heresy is about the inquisition and you play as acolytes, Deathwatch is about spess mehrens and it's horrible and broken and rogue trader uses pretty much the exact same rule system as dark heresy and is about rogue traders.

Don't it's horrible and broken and unbalanced.
Isn`t there a new pen and paper RPG coming out about space marines or something?
I play dark heresy about once a month with a group of friends and I must say, apart from one of the newest rulebooks (ascension) being a horrible unbalanced broken mess it's quite brilliant. Just remember to check out the errata from fantasy flight games website, it corrects a lot of shit.

There is one coming out soon called Black Crusade which is like dark heresy but you play as chaos, quite looking forward to it. Especially if it the rules can merge with dark heresy/rogue trader

By the way, Fantasy flight games owns the right to make all warhammer related board/roleplaying games.

If you are gonna get into Dark Heresy (which I wholeheartedly recommend) I seriously do suggest you buy the Inquisitors handbook in addition to the core rulebook, it adds loads of background stuff and equipment and I could seriously not see our group having have as much fun without it.
Most of the fluff books (creatures anathema and Disciples of the Dark Gods in particular) are a bit of a waste of money. The Radicals Handbook though has some great stuff.
Well now I am torn. Is Dark Heresy a game that could be played by a bunch of people who don't know shit (the basics at most) about pen and paper games? Also, thanks for the link.
I like playing deathwatch it's just having a nid player as a DM sucks. My friend had a double barreled rocket launcher, fired 3 krak missiles (buddy next to him reloaded a barrel for him) in a chaos marine and only did 2 damage and one of them shoots a bolt pistol into me and KO's me.
Contrary to what Chipset says, Deathwatch does not suck.
It's a different power-level to Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader, in which a Hormagaunt is likely something to be feared. It's oriented more towards combat but is only a pure "combat game" if your players lack the creativity and ingenuity to Roleplay an Astartes.
Deathwatch demands being able to do the most retarded things, and yet keeping it realistic enough. A good GM can help that.

I would say so yes, while there is quite a bit of faff in the rules (as there is with any rpg spanning more than one rulebook) most of it can be fucked and just improvised on the spot if the GM is on his toes.
It's all based around a D100 with bonuses and penalties of 10. So I wanna shoot this bastard over here, I have 47 ballistic skill (goes from 0-100) and he's close (less than half the guns range, 20+) so I have to roll under 67 to hit him (47+20).
I do recommend printing out a sheet with shorthand explainations and rules for commonly used abilities (mostly combat moves) and just whatever so you don't have to dick about searching the rulebook making everybody wait. Having 1 or 2 papers with this shit written really keeps combat flowing so much better.
But basically the short of it is, I've been playing dark heresy for like 3 years and while the system is far from perfect, FFG has done an excellent job with the rulebooks and background and I really could not see myself going back to D&D for many many years, if ever.
As long its not D&D, it can't suck that much.

Roleplaying an Astartes: See stuff, shoot stuff, kill stuff, rest of day spent meditating and practisinb combat drills.
If you lack imagination then that's all there is to it. Space Marines are people, just like you and me but with certain facets amped up to the Nth degree. Just because they're built for combat doesn't mean that's all they can do.
Not to toot my own horn, but I'm GMing a game of Dark Heresy for FP here:

Sorry about the pictures, they used to have Mediatags.

Yes it does.
Space marines literally spend every waking moment going from place to place killing things. That is literally all that they do.
That's like saying that Blood Letters don't just kill things, yes, they do just kill things. That's why they're called fucking Blood Letters.

Becoming an angel of death isn't something you just do on the side. You don't get shore leave, you don't have nice chats with your family in between fights, you spend every waking moment fighting, practicing for fighting, or contemplating the codex. That's it.
It's boring to role play, yeah. It would also be boring to role play a Necron warrior, or an Eversor assassin.
If you think Space Marines are all boring, monotone, unemotional superdicks then you need to read about the Space Wolves and the book Brothers of the Snake. Until then, you're dumb.
Shit, even the book Helsreach makes the Black Templar's, of all chapters, look like people.
