DotA and HoN can best be described as session based Player vs. Player RPG's. Ten people play on two teams of five and each person controls a champion of various ability, utility and strength. As you play in a game your hero will level up, you will gain gold, you'll kill opposing heroes and buy items to become stronger. The ultimate objective is to kill the enemies main structure in the back of their base. This takes teamwork and coordination, not something you can do by yourself as the base is also protected by AI controlled creeps that constantly spawn to defend it and towers meant to hold you back. Matches take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and when you're finished and start a new game, you pick a new hero and start all over. Nothing is persistant when it comes to something that can affect each game. If you're previously familiar with DotA they have an awesome comparison page: http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/DotA_vs_HoN What does Heroes of Newerth have that makes it better? Matchmaking - Matchmaking was recently remade and reimplemented! You can solo queue by yourself or queue with a team of friends. Matchmaking earns you Goblin Coins with you can spend in the shop for cool things, but we'll get to that below. In-Depth Stat Tracking - HoN has OCD stat tracking. It tracks your kills, assists, matches played, won lost, damage done to heroes, damage done to creeps, xp earned over a lifetime, APM, and then individual stats with each hero. Like stats? HoN has them. Diverse Heroes - HoN has a large cast of heroes, a good handful which stem from DotA itself. All of them have unique abilities and you should be able to find one that fist how you like to play. Ladder Rankings - Players and clans are automatically ranked in a worldwide ladder so you can see how you match up against other people. Custom Map Editor - With the release of HoN 2.0 (to be elaborated below), S2 announced their custom map editor will be coming out soon! It's in beta at the moment and will be released when ready. Game Reconnection - Dropping from a game back in DotA meant you were screwed. In HoN, you can easily reconnect and not have your game ruined. Leaver Protection - Lobbies can be restricted so that people with a high leaver percentage can't join. Matchmaking is locked if you have a high leaver percentage. Don't play with leavers again! Client-Server Netcode - Back in DotA, despite being played over Battle.net, last was still an issue because of local hosting. Never a problem in HoN and you won't lag either because of one persons connection. Re-Bindable Hotkeys - Don't like how your keys are setup? Change 'em! Built in VOIP - You can talk directly with teammates over HoN using a microphone. Don't delay attacks or missing calls because you need to type it out. Heroes Heroes of Newerth has about 75 heroes to play with now. All of them are seperated into two teams (Legion and Hellbourne) and three catagories (Agility, Intelligence and Strength). You can find all the heroes here: http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/heroes.php Agility heroes are usually what are refered to as "carries". These heroes are known to get very powerful over the course of the game and win games for your team. They need support however because they are very vulnerable early in the game. Intelligence heroes are there for big, quick damage and support abilities. Intelligence are nuke heavy and normally have some kind of disable (slow, stun, silence). Some have heals or team buffs to support during big fights. Strength heroes are sort of a mixed bag. A lot of them are initiators, heroes that are first into the fight because of certain abilities. A handful are carries and a couple are even support heroes. The latest hero: Emerald Warden Game Modes There are two game modes: Normal and Casual. Normal is the standard mode of play. Casual is new, introduced in the 2.0 update and replaced Easy Mode (which was a lie anyway). Here is what is different about Casual mode...

Exp range from 1000 to 1300
Removed gold loss on death
Increased hero bounty
Hero base gold bounty: from 200 to 300
Hero gold bounty per level: from 5 to 10
First blood bonus: from 200 to 300
Gold bounty per streak: from 50 to 75
Hero assist gold totals 50% of kill amount, split between all assisters
Radius assist gold base: from 30 to 0
Radius assist gold per level: from 5 to 0
Respawn time per level from 4 seconds to 3 seconds
Denies no longer deny experience
Uphill miss chance removed
Creeps give 1.25x of average normal mode value, no gold fluctuation
Buildings give 1.5x of average normal mode value, no gold fluctuation
Towers give global experience when killed, even to dead people, (by tower level): 150,200,250,300
Tower last hit gold bounty: from 470,520,570,620 to 300,350,400,450
Tower Team gold bounty: from 200,240,280,320 to 300,350,400,450
The amount of experience required to reach the next level increases as the game goes on. This means that at the beginning, players level up a lot faster than in Normal Mode, but in the mid and late game they level up at about the same rate as in Normal Mode.
Buyback costs are at 1.75x normal mode values
Towers' armor scales with number of players alive; Buildings have 100% of armor when all are alive, scaling to 0 armor when your entire team is dead
Casual mode is, all in all, less punishing than Normal but close enough to it that going from Casual to Normal isn't a gigantic leap. Pick Modes When you get into any game of HoN you will need to pick a hero before it starts. There are several different modes of hero picking that you should be aware of. All Pick - Standard hero selection. You can pick any hero from any faction as long as someone else has not picked that hero already. Random Draft - Limits hero selection to 20 heroes then alternates picking between players. Single Draft - Each player is given a hero selection of one agility, one intelligence and one strength hero. Banning Draft - Identical to Random Draft except Blue and Pink take turns banning 4 total heroes first. Banning Pick - Blue and Pink take turns banning 6 total heroes and then players alternate picking from the remaining hero pool. Q's and A's Does this game cost anything? Yes. It's $30 for the game. All future updates are free, all champions are unlocked. You have access to everything. Does it have a trial? Yes there is! It's limited to 10 "no stat" games and unlimited practice games but it's still everything HoN has to offer. http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/trial.php So I got the game. Now what? There is an in-game tutorial. Start it and play it through. Learn the basics! Feel free to look around the in-game hero compendium too. You'll get all the information you need about every hero in the game. Start a practice game to check out heroes. Play games marked "no stats" so you don't get into a real game, do terrible and you're stats are ruined or you caused a loss because you didn't know what you were doing. Find a champion that fits you. I heard this game has mean people... That isn't a question but it is true. Generally any DotA related community have their share of really vocal assholes. It's the nature of the game. If a teammate is doing badly, it's buffing the enemy and bringing down your own team. The best advice I can give is to ignore these people. It's not hard to with the in-game ignore function. There is a report function as well. Use it to report people who irrationally never concede, ward spam, are blatantly not participating in the game, generally ruining your good time, etc. I heard this game is hard to learn... Still not a question but also true. In HoN you need to learn every ability of every hero, every item, possible item builds, how to level your hero, map awareness, how to lane correctly, ability combos, etc., etc. Do not be intimidated by all this. It will come with time. There are guides to help out with these ideas too. The HoN forums have an entire section devoted to getting people to learn the game (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/forumdisplay.php?f=43). Read up, check YouTube or just play games. Skim the HoNwiki (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). Something that was added in the May13th update are in-game hero guides!! If you click that book next to the "Categories" button you'll open up the guide window. It automatically displays the highest rated guide. You can find more from the drop menu at the top. This is one of the best features they've added to the game. To get you started, here is a pretty good tutorial on the basics of HoN. What is the Goblin Store? The Goblin Store is new with the 2.0 update. Anything in the Goblin Store is purely cosmetic and has no affect on gameplay. Things in the store range from alternative avatars for heroes, which can be anything from a skin swap to full animation and voice changes, announcer packs or just silly little icons that will show up next to your name. You can shop in the store using Goblin Coins which you can buy with real money or by playing games using the matchmaking feature. Buying coins will get you Gold coins. Playing matchmaking will earn you Silver coins. They're pretty much the same but when you buy something with Gold coins you'll dip into your Silver coin pile for some of the price if you have any. Some items are classified as Premium items and you can only buy with Gold coins. Helpful Links HoN Guide Index - All of the in-game guides are also on the HoN website. Prodex - Maintained by Nigama (S2 Community Manager) and Cawk (Graphic Designer at S2) it's a good place to check out builds and rudimentary info on heroes. HoNcast - An almost daily video site for match commentary from tournaments and a weekly podcast. Good way to watch high level play and get insight. The Bro Code of HoN - A great intro to solo queuing in matchmaking. Could use some more links here. Referral Link If you're thinking of signing up for Heroes of Newerth and would like to throw a little love my way (because I made a good OP or you think I'm cool or something), click the link below. It's a referral link and when you buy and account using it, I get 500 Goblin Coins. http://heroesofnewerth.com/ref.php?r=SQXKM50M If not, just sign up normally via the website. In-Game Channels HoN has an IRC-ish chat system and people can set up channels easily. Some are even worth being in! Clan Face Punch - Our "main" channel. Most people from this thread can be found here. Facepunch - The other channel. Not as many people in here. Reddit - The Reddit channel. Lot's of people in here. Great for finding pickup teams. RedditClass - If you're brand new to HoN and want some punishment free learning, join this channel! People from Reddit will teach you HoN stuff. Facepunch Players Join the Facepunch channel in game. You can find most of us there. Just type /j Clan Face Punch and you're in. Some people also hang in /j Facepunch. :siren: [I]If you want to get on the list, PM me like so: "Facepunch name - HoN name". I started playing on trial account. Can you make multiple trail accounts for "unlimited" playing? And does the 10$ offer will be tommorow?
I started playing on trial account. Can you make multiple trail accounts for "unlimited" playing? And does the 10$ offer will be tommorow?
It will infact be over tomorrow, but no one knows if it will be today after 23:59 or 26th December 23:59! What's the point in playing on trial accounts, you are bound to no stat games where people tend to leave after they get killed.
I started playing on trial account. Can you make multiple trail accounts for "unlimited" playing? And does the 10$ offer will be tommorow?
Sure, but you might as well buy the game after a certain point but keep playing no stat games.
i play this and i'm fairly new to it all switched from LoL to HoN my in-game name is NomadicNinja
https://www.heroesofnewerth.com/gift.php buy me hon
I just hope custom maps on HoN take off as much as they did on WC3. Warcraft 3 had like a million tower defences, DoTA, Pokemon RPGs, Final Fantasy RPGs, LOAP (sort of an MORPG), RISK, DoTA but with boats and pirates and hundreds of upgradeable cannons, rockets and lazers, DoTA but with tanks and airships, with hundreds of upgradeable guns, lazers and epic rocket launchers. Not to mention Lord of the Rings where you go through the story from the Shire to Mordor, Lord of the Rings RISK, Troy and 300 movie games, Helms Deep defences, Poker, fucking Resident Evil. The best bit? New games were hosted every second, you could join and download all the maps and custom content in about 20 seconds. I shit you not, all of these were fucking amazing and some of them even worth their own games, which people would certainly pay for.

I never played any melee, only the mods. Unfortunately i am getting some glitch that doesnt allow me to connect to bnet :sigh:
I never played Single Player, Campaign or Traditional Multiplayer on WC3 or TFT. I bought WC3 and TFT and only ever played custom games for the 1000+ hours that I played. Shit was fucking addictive! Lord of the Rings LOAP was pretty good, Battle Tanks was epic (DoTA but with tanks). I liked Life of a Peasant too, where you play as a peasant and get jobs to earn money to buy houses and can get married and shit if you chose, in some modified versions you had Resident Evil zombies as well. Parasite was cool too, you were on a massive space station as a marine, and one player is a secret zombie who has to fuck everyone up.
http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/forumdisplay.php?f=190 Maps in the making!
http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/forumdisplay.php?f=190 Maps in the making!
Someone requested Battle Tanks!!! FUCKING EPIC Battle Tanks and lots of other custom games were more well-played and more fun than DoTA, but DoTA was more refined and had competitive aspects so it was made into real games. When shit kicks off I can see the player base massively expanding to include all of the WC3 custom game players (millions) who just didn't like DoTA.
Been playing since beta and I enjoy the game from time to time. I play both this and League and I have to say I like the variety of spells in HoN.

Fucking awesome!
We can probably get a match going later on, gonna watch a movie now. Everyone get on the FACEPUNCH channel, so we can gather and such!
Ign: amgoz1stgs
Facepunch in-houses, sounds amazing. I love playing non-official, but still competitive games.
Add me to the list; Ragestealer And if you want to win alot, join me and thebadboy :) Also, i've been playing since the beta. About 1500+ games now. My main was 1700+ but left too many games. So i decided to create Ragestealer for MM
Just bought it, been playing League of Legends for a while so I'm going to give this a try.
The editor has such powerful capabilites? Fucking awesome!
I hope it does! Maybe someone will reverse engineer it back into an RTS like Warcraft. Custom Games took a while to get going on WC3, but now the stuff that is made is so damn cash. Two more custom games I remember: Hungry Felhounds: You and the other players spawn in an arena, a ball gets thrown out of the portal and the felhound appears, it chases down the player with the ball, but it has wierd movement, it kinda drifts sideways like you'd expect a drift car to do, and accelerates awesomely, which is plain cool. Every second you hold the ball, the higher your combo builds. When you throw the ball to another player, I think a longer combo might stun them. You can also teleport. It was very fun to play. Footman frenzy: Couldn't find a good video for this one. You get a troop every 3 seconds and you send them out to support your hero. You get gold for killing other troops which you can use to upgrade your own to archers etc. [editline]25th December 2010[/editline] By the way, my ingame name is Wing
I didn't think the map editor would be that awesome. I got the impression earlier that you could only make maps for the original modes. Erection engaged. PS: PM me your ID's else you don't get on the list. PSS: You'd know that if you read the OP.
Beardy you begging bastard just buy the bloody game.
