So I want to work on a mod that pretends to give you back to past when your games didn't have super tactical weapwns, hyper realistic gameplay, in terms of graphics: bloom rape/super high poly models, etc.
I have a problem with one of the features that the nostalgic videogames give to me: the graphics.
With GoldSRC i could kind of give the same feelings, but in Source i have a lot of more features, like (maybe lighting), particles or some shaders like water, and physics, but i would have to improve the models in the game, and goodbye the nostalgic 1998-2001 fps feeling.
So make something like Half Life: Source, GoldSRC or fuck outdated graphics?
Wow, you did that quickly. Well done!

I believe you don't get what I mean.

So what would it fit low-poly in Source?
He's talking about having VVVVVV-style graphics. As in VVVVVV was a blocky 2d indie platformer, he wants to do a GoldSRC style model thing. You know, low-polys and stuff.
Sounds like a good idea man.
You want to make a game that intentionally looks and feels like an older game, but you think that a modern engine like Source would ruin the effect. Is this correct?
Because if this is the case, I don't see what's stopping you.
edit: :ninja:
Sounds like something I'm currently working on.
Use Wolf 3D engine
Use pong's engine.

Yeah, that sounds like waht he means. And it actually soudns kinda cool.
The classic look of low-poly models of, say, Half-Life, but without sacrificing the limitations of an old engine.
Feature: Tactical cigars that you can smoke, but they don't do nothing to the player, It's just a tactical cigar you can collect and smoke, even while shooting.

While there is a lot of existing documentation on making stuff with GoldSrc, ive noticed a fair amount of it is disappearing rapidly (I can't count how many went down with the geocities ship) and it can be a challenge tracking down some of the old tools/utilities.
As much as I like GoldSrc you will have to learn all its quirks and deal with various limitations; for example I really find the material system a real pain (indexed colour pallets, .WAD files, and textures that have to be compiled with the model) and the old hammer has lots of issues.
Id probably suggest going with source with low-poly, small textures, particles/sprites with 1-bit or threshold transparency (or additive blending), bone-controlled facial/mouth animations and no special shaders of any kind . I went with goldsrc for video purposes only because I really wanted to match my videos to the 1998 HL universe.
