Can anyone suggest some fun, multiplayer games that can be run on almost any computer? I would prefer they be free, but it's not a necessity.
My friend and I are looking for something to do instead of Minecraft.

Seriously? My friend bought TF2 a year or so ago but his computer is about 8 years old...
Red Eclipse
Doom 1 & 2
Quake 1, 2 & 3
Unreal Tournament
If you don't have them (WHAT) and you don't feel like buying them there's demos that can provide a good amount of entertainment on their own.
Also, for Doom and Quake 1 you might want to look for some source ports for them. To make them a bit more current day user/computer friendly.

I bought my computer in 2001. TF2 and most properly optimized modern games run like a wet dream on it.
Fallout: 2238. It can get addicting if you have time to spare and a large group of buddies that are willing to try it. Though you need some files from Fallout: 2 to run it, other people just find them online.

My 6 year old computer can run most source games on medium to high settings but it was pretty top of the line for its time.I would try it out on fairly low settings because you might just be able to.
Battlefield 1942,
Counter-Strike 1.6,
Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory (free),
Urban Terror (free),
Gang Garrison (Free, TF2 demake),
Ace of Spades (free).
Spiral Knights is fun, co-op only goes up to 4 players though.
Also check out Warsow - it's a pretty cool free FPS
