Brace for mostly copy paste. The website! Path of Exile is a free online action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. It is under development by Grinding Gear Games and is currently in open beta. Game features: - Completely free to download and play - A persistent online world capable of supporting hundreds of thousands of players - A dark and gritty game world rendered from a fixed 3D perspective - Battle dozens of foes across a variety of unique areas - Randomly generated levels and items for extreme replayability - Online ranking and ladders for every game mode - Visceral combat with dozens of combinable skills - Battle in PVP tournaments for worldwide recognition Classes: There are currently 6 classes within the game. The game differentiates from other ARPG character systems in that the only difference between the classes is their starting attributes and their starting location on the passive skill tree. Other than this there are no limits on what each class may become. Want a duel sword wielding witch? Go for it. Want a powerful ice mage and staff using marauder? No problem. This flexible character system allows you to create your own unique class. The passive skill tree is massive allowing for hundreds of different setups, but I will get to that later. The current classes are as follows: The Marauder (Pure strength), The Ranger (Pure dexterity), The Witch (Pure intelligence), The Duelist (Strength/Dexterity Hybrid), The Templar (Strength/Intelligence Hybrid), and The Shadow (Dexterity/Intelligence Hybrid) [t]http://pool.pathofexilewiki.com/w/images/thumb/Marauder_select.jpg/291px-Marauder_select.jpg[/t] [t]http://pool.pathofexilewiki.com/w/images/Ranger_select.jpg[/t] [t]http://pool.pathofexilewiki.com/w/images/thumb/Witch_select.jpg/477px-Witch_select.jpg[/t] [t]http://pool.pathofexilewiki.com/w/images/Duelist_select.jpg[/t] [t]http://pool.pathofexilewiki.com/w/images/Templar_select.jpg[/t] [t]http://pool.pathofexilewiki.com/w/images/thumb/Shadow_select.jpg/352px-Shadow_select.jpg[/t] The passive skill tree: Another unique feature of Path of Exile is it's massive, overwhelming skill tree. At first it will look intimidating, and then it will continue to intimidate you for a while until you try many builds. Each class starts on it's own spot on the skill tree. Every time you level up you get a skill point which you will put into lighting up a path of nodes in however fashion you would like your build. [t]http://www.theimgproject.com/static/the-skill-tree-in-path-of-exile-cant-wait-for.jpg[/t] Each node offers a passive upgrade or ability. Most are simple, such as 20% more spell damage, or +1 extra minion that can be summoned. every once in while you come across notable nodes, such as 40% more damage with duel wielding and 10% faster attack speed. Then there are the giant nodes on the ends of the tree. These are unique passives which can change up your build big time. One of these could be Blood magic, which makes spells use your health pool instead of your mana pool, or Chaos Inoculation, which makes your maximum life 1 but makes you immune to chaos damage. These are just a very few examples of what the skill tree contains. Skill Gems: The skill system in Path of Exile is very different from your standard ARPG. Instead of each class getting their own skills, skills come in the form of gems which can be put into sockets on items. There are 2 types of skill gems and 3 sub-types for both. The main types are skill gems and support gems. Skill gems give you a certain power, spell, or ability, and support gems give bonus's to skill gems when they are put in a socket connected to them. There are 3 sub-types of skills gems and support gems, red (strength), green (dexterity), and blue (intelligence). Lists of gems and the stats they use: (MCM is short for Mana Cost Multiplier, some support gems affect how much mana a skill costs to cast.) Currency: There's no coins or gold in PoE, you're stuck on an island full of undead, monsters and violent assholes, if it can't help you murder things it's worthless. This is (roughly) what these are worth, if you can barter in your favour that's always good. There's also a website that gives ballpark figures for how much gear is worth, but I can't find it, someone link me and I'll add it. Oh, and here's the text for the OP, for whoever's remaking this when it gets locked. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5636656/PoE%20OP.txt
I'm leveling my Duelist instead of my Shadow now, about halfway into A2 Cruel and I'm having a far better time. I actually do more DPS than my Shadow at this point, which speaks far too much about how crap my gear is on him. I'm going a tanky build that focuses a lot on charges. Right now I have four Endurance and four Frenzy charges. Should have five of each at some point and six of each when the build is "maxed". :v:
Badly in need of making my end game set on my necromancer, but too broke to afford anything really. I need to, at some point, obtain a 6L Astral plate with all blue sockets. That is going to be a right pain in the ass - I could re-roll the socket colours myself although it'd probably take about 200 to 300 chromatic orbs as astral plate is pure strength. I was looking at glorious plate as that's a higher level/armour value but astral plate can have +12% to all resistances implicitly so I figure that's worth losing 50 armour.
Well, should I worth playing now or would this be better waiting for the end of beta?
It's worth it to play now, especially because there will not be any more character wipes. (besides the fact that it's tons of fun)
And I don't think there's any ETA on the end of beta either.
Well, should I worth playing now or would this be better waiting for the end of beta?
The game will definitely get better as it goes on, but it's already one of the best ARPGs if not the best I have ever played. There's a major advantage to being a pre-content character, which is being difficulties ahead without completing the harder acts. For example, say they release act 4 in a year - the acts appear to be scaling unbelievably hard in difficulty, so act 4 is likely to be an evil from which only the dead can know peace from. Since you'll have already completed all the difficulties when there was only 3 acts, normal act 4 will probably be easy, cruel act 4 will probably be a bit annoying, and hopefully you'll be prepared to a much greater extent than you would have been otherwise for merciless act 4. I'm pretty well equipped now for merciless act 3 compared to when I first completed it, so I assume by the time act 4 arrives I should be able to take it on.
This game is good, and I like to play it. I finally got my first character to Merciless! My elemental cleave templar is romping and raving his way through Wraeclast, killing up monsters and generally giving no shits. I hit a bit of a wall in Act 2 with my crappy resists, but after a lucky drop or two I was back in action. It definitely helps that I've got a friend who plays this pretty regularly, too. We both happened to have Templars right around the same level, so we just started rolling together.
Yeah, I actually have a character for each group of friends I play with, so I'm always around their levels. If I'd stuck to one I'd probably be at the end game now :v:
Well, finally got around to playing it, surprisingly better than I expected, kinda reminds me of Borderlands. By the way, is it better to go solo or to try to get a party as often as possible?
Well, finally got around to playing it, surprisingly better than I expected, kinda reminds me of Borderlands. The rate at which you gain EXP stays about the same as far as I know, but the loot goes up the roof. For every player the monsters get 50% more health, but they also drop 50% more loot so with a full 6 player party the monsters have 250% more health and 250% larger loot droprate. But the thing is, when a valuable item (rare, unique, orbs, skillgems) drops for you, you have limited time to pick it up. After the time is up, everyone can pick it up and steal it from you. The amount of time you have is based on your distance to the mob when it dies. This wouldn't be so bad if the timer was like 5-10 seconds, but currently it is about 1-3 seconds so if you have the slightest bit of lag, everything that drops for you will be stolen. So if you go with a pubgroup, expect to see much more loot if your ping is good and you're a ninja (the scum of the deepest shitholes) and expect to see somewhat less loot if your ping is high. If you have real friends though, then it is entirely different when people don't steal from each other.

I joined a clan/guild 'cause I like to run maps with groups every so often, and all but one of my friends don't play PoE. They have a no-ninja policy when it comes to looting, and everyone in there is trustworthy. Running maps with them is great fun.

Sometimes when I played with one of my friends we would stand over each other's loot waiting for the timer to run out so we can steal each other's shit. 4/5 times we got to our loot in time, way better than the Diablo 2 system. Its more about if you're paying attention or not.

Personally I have had 5 uniques drop for me so far. 3 of those five I was in pub parties and manage to get to all of them on time. Yesterday I was doing a Piety run with a pub party and a Unique dropped for some guy (Aztizi's Mirror or w/e) and he wasn't there in time for the timer, Every person in the party was on top of it, clicking to their hearts content. I got it, and gave it to him, because I'm a bro like that. Now if that unique was something like Andvarius or Kaom's heart, I'd keep it and say it's his loss :V Give him like a couple gcps just cause haha
Yeah, the netcode needs a lot of work, between not being able to pick up items and enemies quite clearly not actually being where you see them, VERY fucking noticeable with traps, there's be a lot of times where I've thrown a trap in front of a group of enemies, and then someone a quarter way across the screen is the one who triggers it. Makes hitting the one rare enemy in a group with a conversion trap an exercise in frustration. [editline]1st March 2013[/editline] And getting hit by melee enemies who're seem to be nowhere near you and getting nudged fifteen feet back to where you were a moment ago is seriously fucking annoying as well.

I play in Australia with on average 370ms then 1100ms lag spikes and picking up my own loot isn't so bad. Sure the timer could use another second or 2, but the items don't count as stolen if the timer expires. I tend to keep to only parties that have FFA in the title so I'm not kicked for playing the way the devs intend it to be played for now. Loot options for parties would go a long way. I never join a 'No Ninja' party but I know plenty of other people don't do the same. It must suck for your groups. I find clicking and holding on an item will give me it before anyone else in the party, even the Americans I play with. That tip could help you guys. Won't help if you desync though.
my dagger crit shadow is finally working it's extremely fast paced, and i have to manage my potions really well, but it is really really fun to play. i activate blood rage, soften up a huge group with lmp and pierce lightning strke + critical weakness, finish them all off with flicker strike, and use dual strike sometimes for easy rare monsters, and viper strike for bosses i'll probably need to switch to a dagger + shield soon though, instead of dual wield, since it doesn't give much benefit for LS or whirling blades or flicker strike

I'll loot a chest, with my partner not even on the screen, and his name will show up on the rare item with a timer, making it so I can't get it even though I looted the chest. Which means he runs up and takes it. Or I'll be taking care of one part of a mob and he'll be doing another part, I kill a monster who drops a rare item and it'll have his name on it despite me doing the kill and all the damage. Which means he ends up picking it up, or I end up "stealing" from him if I am far enough away. It's retarded. They need to make it so the loot timer is longer, and make it so the drops are directly tied in with who did what damage. I.E. if you do 50/50 damage then half the rares that drop will go to you while half will go to your partner, if you do 100% damage then the rare will go to you on a timer first, etc. It's fucking stupid how its totally random if it goes to you or your partner, even if you did all the work, and that the timers are so short that melee characters pretty much always get the loot because they are going to be right next to it.

The only downside is if something really good drops it becomes rat race. Still, it's better to party unless you're farming for loot exclusively IMO. Being a higher level will allow you to farm better, so there's no point in farming items IMO until your leveling starts to really slow down.

If you enter a dungeon with your party, and then you pop a dozen quicksilver flasks and zoom ahead, you can loot all the chests while your party is killing mobs. Currently farming Normal Vaal with 240% Rarity, 3 alts and a friend. We get like 10+ Rares every run
Vaal on my normal maruader was rather easy, it seems like point blank is his weakness; as long as you run in circles.... Those lasers hurt like hell tho.

As long as you avoid the ice blasts, you can dodge his lasers just by strafing him at any distance. His most dangerous move is that wrecking ball, which will just about one-shot anybody who isn't very tanky, but again, it's easy to see coming.
I was worried mainly because I keep seeing in global chat bitch about how "hard" he was
I thought he was overpowered as hell the first time I fought him, but that's because I was trying to face tank the dude. This kills the crab.
