[release]Morrowind is an open-ended single-player RPG that was released around 2002, and it's first and second expansions Tribunal and Bloodmoon were released and had their final patches in 2003.[/release]
[release]What do you do in this game and what is it about?
I'm glad I asked. It's about a lot of things. There is indeed a main quest but I don't think in my 50 hours (so far) that I have put into the game ever completed it. I would always get side-tracked by the trillions of side-quests that are floating everywhere. Anyway, the game is simply about you, a prisoner, who was recently released from the Imperial Prison and sent to the province of Morrowind. It's all open waters from there. There are quests to do, dungeons to raid, people to talk to, and places to explore. The world is fucking huge.[/release]
[release]Factions
There are many factions in Morrowind, however some of them are not joinable and are there for the sake of quests and events. I'm only listing the joinable ones. Take note, that once you join a "house" faction on a character, you cannot change houses as that is permanent (on that character atleast) and it will determine a lot of stuff. Like your disposition towards other NPCs, what house-only quests are available and so on.
Houses
House Hlaalu
House Telvanni
House Redoran
Imperial Guilds
The Blades
East Empire Company
Fighters Guild
Imperial Cult
Imperial Legion
Mages Guild
Thieves Guild
Other Guilds
Ashlanders
Morag Tong
Tribunal Temple
Vampire Clans
Aundae Clan
Berne Clan
Quarra Clan

Items
There are a huge list of items. Like huge. Here's the list:

Spells and Alchemy
Once again, the amount of legit spells is huge. However there is an awesome feature that lets you find different kinds of "effects" and you can use those to craft your own spells. Say you wanted a Fire Spell that also Slowed your target, you could probably make that. Since there are different "schools" of magic, those being Destruction, Mysticism, Conjuration, Restoration, Illusion, and Alteration. There is some complex algorithm to determine how effective certain effects are with each-other, but unfortunately I don't know it. There is also Alchemy which is similar to Spell-creation except you buy or find ingredients and mix these to create potions and in essence it's just like Spell-making except with liquid and not magic.

Hey! I've played Oblivion and want to check this out. What's different?
For one, there is no fast travel. Yep. You have to walk everywhere or get transport like a silt-strider (a giant bug that acts like a sort of giant vehicle), a boat or some other kind of transport. Or you could walk. The exploration is more fun than opening a map and putting your finger on a place and just being there. That's just silly.
Number two, if you don't have any skill in a certain weapon you will not do well in combat. You should be at least level 30 or so in a weapon to be able to use it properly and hit things at a consistent rate. This is why you pay attention when gearing and making your character.
Number there, there is virtually no voice acting. It's a sad but true fact, the whole story is in the text and so are conversations. The good part about this is, there is none of this shoddy stuff that you see in Oblivion when you have a mod that uses custom dialogue, and when you talk to someone they stare at you blankly while line after line of text appears.
Number four, (this actually applies to all new players) unfortunately you can't wait for anything to grab you, you have to hop up on it and dive in yourself. Like in Oblivion, there was always someone telling you what to do from the start, in Morrowind you are dumped in a port village with no instruction. I suggest you look up a "Morrowind Beginners Guide" if you feel lost.
Number five, the world is bigger. Much bigger. Like five times bigger than Oblivion, and there is more diverse stuff in it. Like in Oblivion it would be like every 2 feet was a castle. Or just plain trees. Which is boring. I'm not beating on Oblivion, it was a great game its environments felt rather dull and lacking compared to Morrowind. I'm getting off-topic. Whoops.
Anyway that sums up what you need to know.

Mods
There are a huge amount of mods for this game. If you happen to own the PC version that is. (Sorry Xbox users!) The ones that should be vital to your copy of Morrowind are the "Ultimate Morrowind Anti-Mod" as this reduces tons of lag from the game and the Unofficial Morrowind Patch as this fixes tons of problems and improves performance as well. You want to improve performance because the engine Morrowind uses is dated and seems unsuitable for modern hardware, therefore these mods will help. I'd like to note that both mods, although they increase performance, take no toll on the visuals what so ever. Cheers.

Thread music! :3:

Discuss your thoughts on this game. After all, that is what this thread is for.
I will update this thread with more information if needed.
This game is available for:
Xbox 360 (It runs like shit, don't get it)
PC with either a boxed copy or through Steam (Get the "game of the year" edition as it has the expansions)[/release]
[release]
Foot Notes
If you want to complain about how you can't build your character correctly and can't hit things for shit because of this, then get out.
Morrowind is an RPG. Your skills matter. Unlike Oblivion.

I actually got this for the Xbox because it was like 2 bucks and I love it but it takes like 15 minutes just to load a saved game and the other loading times aren't short either.

Instead of making a new thread, you could have gone back a page or so and found the TES series megathread.
I hate the combat in this game
Instead of making a new thread, you could have gone back a page or so and found the TES series megathread.
Fuck. My bad. :smith:
I wish that when TES V gets released it will have all the good stuff from both morrowind and oblivion, and atleast not too much of the bad stuff.
I hate the combat in this game
Mods.
Sell it and get the PC version. You will be much happier.
I bought it for $2 so how much do you expect me to sell it for?
I hate the combat in this game
It's either shit your pants at anything tougher then you/you can't hit for shit, or the horrific leveling system they had for Oblivion.
I've never really had problems with the combat system.
I've never really had problems with the combat system.
Same, you just have to actually be careful where you go, lest you encounter a Daedra Lord at level 3 :ohdear:
Or cliff racers... Oh god the cliff racers...
I've never really had problems with the combat system.
I'ts only annoying in the beginning levels, but if you get past that then it's pretty much smooth sailing.
The combat system really only sucks early in the game when you can't hit anything. I started playing this again 2 days ago.
fucking cliffracers
It's either shit your pants at anything tougher then you/you can't hit for shit, or the horrific leveling system they had for Oblivion.
Oh god. The leveling system in Oblivion was horrible. This is how alchemy works.
Since it's impossible to get a potion wrong: Make one, you're level six. Another, level seven. And another, level eight, and here is where it gets tricky, two more you're level nine.
The combat system really only sucks early in the game when you can't hit anything. I started playing this again 2 days ago.
fucking cliffracers
:D
Morrowind's setting is still miles better than the generic European fantasy stuff of Oblivion, I hope Bethesda does the same sort of "foreign land" thing for TES V.
Apparently I had left off around Ghostgate. The amount of Cliffracers there is astounding. And Infuriating.
I've lost count of all the times I've finished this game, and it's still got replayability.
Sadly neither my main nor laptop can run it well, as one is too new and the other is too weak (and runs Linux)
I remember filling an entire 20GB harddrive with just Morrowind back when Bloodmoon had just been released. I still have that harddrive lying around here somewhere, packed to the brim with addons.
I recently found out about the OpenMW project and though they're quite a while away from a fully playable game it's still amazing to know that the Morrowind scene is very much alive and kicking.
Also, I'm just curious, but can anyone run this game smoothly? I always found it weird that I could never get it to run smoothly with a decent view distance on any of the computers I've played it on. I've just gotten used to playing with 20fps or so, but I always wondered what it was like for people when this game first came out.
And my specs are
Nvidia 9800M GTS 512mb
4gb of RAM
Intel Core2Duo T9300 @ 2.5ghz
and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
And I do know about the FPS optimizer, but I'd rather have a good view distance.
I love Morrowind but I've yet to beat the main quest. I've beaten almost all the guild quests, though. The difficulty of the first main quest (go into the dwemer ruins) really put me off the first time I played the game. I mean the dungeon is HUGE, and the thing you need is right off of the first room on a path you probably won't even know is walkable. I must have explored the whole thing before I found it.
Also, dwemer ruins>>>ayleid ruins.
Morrowind was leagues more interesting than Oblivion, I just couldn't get into Oblivion at all. Everything felt so much blander and watered down.
Anyone ever figure out why morrowind always ran like such shit?
I don't remember Morrowind running like shit, and I played it on a shitty family computer
I don't remember Morrowind running like shit, and I played it on a shitty family computer
when everything else runs at 20fps then it wouldn't be very noticeable.
Hey everyone-who-said-the-game-runs-like-shit. Well unless you have a seriously bad-ass gaming rig, you'll probably get the same slow-downs. The reason for this is that Morrowind's engine isn't optimized for modern hardware, and therefore doesn't seem to run very well. Honestly though I play this game on these specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
Intel i5 2.4 GHz x4
4 GB RAM
ATi 4570 512mb
I don't really check my FPS, but when I do I usually have the normal 60 FPS. There are several places in large cities (like Balmora) where I'd be looking at the whole thing from across the river with like 10 NPCs and a bunch of buildings that my FPS would drop around 27.
Now, how do I get such good FPS compared to you guys? Mods.
Get the "Ultimate Morrowind Anti-Mod", this gets rid of a bunch of useless static objects that are hidden underground and takes nothing off of the visuals.
Second, get the "Unofficial Morrowind Patch" as this corrects tons of dialogue problems, improves performance and pretty much just patches a lot of stuff.
Happy adventuring!
