What is it, and how do you kill it? The only thing that we could hit it with was the hammer, and when we tried to do so, we lost 42 HP and it didn't hurt it.

I believe you have to throw 3 peices of dynamite at it, whilst walled in close to it. I hear it makes some sort of portal.

You just have to keep bashing it with the hammer, I don't think it kills you after it drops you to 1hp.
It's a Demon Altar, it's used to summon a boss. You can't kill it, don't bother trying. You hit it with a hammer, you'll lose half your current health.
