[release]
Feel like organizing some DoD games?
Check out the steam group!: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/fadod Make an announcement if you want to start playing! [/release] [release]
Day of Defeat
"Day of Defeat is a 3D multiplayer shooter that simulates squad-level infantry combat between the adversaries of World War II's European Theatre; the Allies or the Axis Powers. The goal is to complete various mission objectives. Players can choose between the Allied armies (American and/or British armies, depending on the map) or the Axis armies. A round begins with two opposing teams starting simultaneously in their respective spawn area of a map. A round ends when one team accomplishes all of its objectives." Gameplay is very much like the above!) "Day of Defeat: Source is a team-based first-person shooter multiplayer video game developed by Valve Corporation. Set in World War II, the game is an updated version of Day of Defeat, moving from the GoldSrc engine used by its predecessor to the Source engine. Players choose to join the forces of either the United States Army or the German Wehrmacht and compete against each other in a variety of game modes. Players select from one of six classes to play as, each with its own role within the team.[4] Player characters cannot take much damage, and in some circumstances can be killed by a single bullet, forcing players to make use of cover to stay alive.[5]" Store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/300/?snr=1_5_9__13 [/release] Both Day of Defeat games have been popular Steam games, and I was curious if any of you guys would like to play either games together on Steam. I use to host a DoD Steam group a few years back for an old community I was a part of, which still boasts about 70 players. Back in its heyday, a friend of mine even hosted a GoldSrc server where we use to have a few modest games going. I'd gladly post the link to the group if there's enough interest! Just as an FYI, however, it's harder to find pub games on DoD GoldSrc than DoDS; DoDS still has a somewhat active community.
People still play this? Not wanting to upset anyone but I never was a fan of DoD.
you must be some kind of bitch then
GoldSrc is one of my favorite games of all time, Source was pretty good too except it got stuck between other Valve projects and they barely gave it any attention. The guy who did the last set of real updates (other than bug fixes) for Source is the father of one of the original team members, so that should give you an idea of how much the devs wanted to work on it. He did a bunch of map fixes but inadvertently left in some clumsy mapping errors (like the nodraw'd bit of the wall in Anzio), which I can remember pointing out on the forums a long time ago. I believe he fixed everything, and possibly even compiled the maps, but for the past two years Valve hasn't managed to scrape together enough people to look over his work and throw it on the content servers.
I tried joining one of those "units". Serious as shit. I mean it's ok to be serious when time comes but they were like strict serious about their units. Reason I dont play DOD:S anymore.
only thing I ever do on DODS is run around trying to melee people, KDRs of like 1:15 I'm a pro.
People still play this? Not wanting to upset anyone but I never was a fan of DoD.
Yes and no. It's not like L4D2 or TF2 where the community is an active force, but there's still plenty of servers and players for DoDS, for instance. It's still a great game though, and a faithful transition to the Source engine. Also, that's pretty interesting about DoDS updates. Never heard about that.
DoDS looks really active to me.
DoDS looks really active to me.
It is pretty active, it currently sits at #28 out of the top 100 games played on Steam (at least recently, anyway). It has about 1,000 more players on than HL2 Deathmatch, for instance. But the game isn't as active as it could be; there's still plenty of servers available for a good game, but the community isn't as strong as other games.
I wish I have DoD:Source I had so much fun playing it
DoD:S is my favourite Valve game of all time.
Added the group into the OP incase you guys wanna play sum <:
only thing I ever do on DODS is run around trying to melee people, KDRs of like 1:15 I'm a pro.
I just run around with a grenade trying to suicide bomb. :v:
DoD Classic master race. It had more cool weapons, which were left out of Source for no apparent reasons. :saddowns:
Classic DoD is ok but it's not played enough :c.
Who the fuck is crackodile and why is he rating everyone dumb? As for DOD, it's a good game, but doesn't get the deserved attention.
GoldSrc is one of my favorite games of all time.
What are you smoking? GoldSrc is an engine, not a game.
He's talking about the actual game man, not the engine.
I wish they'd add all the different forces and weapons into the source one. The classic one has different kinds of units in almost every map, while the source one just has the same stuff on every map.
I've heard that a lot from people who played and loved the original DoD, to be honest. Lots of complaints about how the British were left out, certain units and maps, etc. I think the fact that DoDS uses the physics engine and object cover really wells sort of makes up for the lack of forces and weapons. DoDS feels much more fluid because of the Source engine, so the replayability lost by not having those units is sort of made up for in how DoDS has a gameplay system which flows a little bit better.
I occasionally play DoD:S I'd play with some FPers
If you guys want to work out some games, be sure to join: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/fadod There's already a good chunk of members from the previous DoD games I use to host, and I and a few other friends have been playing DoDS regularly <:
A large group of us have stuck together over the years because of Day of Defeat (themesshall.net, if anyone was an avid forum member years ago, you'll be sure to notice and remember the members on TMH). Some of us were there from Day 1 beta (myself included) and others joined up along the way. 99% of us feel Day of Defeat: Source was a huge step back and really did not fit the whole DoD feel. In came the bright colors, clean maps, individualism among classes was stripped away. We helped test DoD:S beta and all of our ideas or concerns were ignored. Of course we did not expect to be the ones in charge but we all could tell that the game was heading in a different direction. I am sure there would be a huge following for DoD if the game received an overhaul and had some attention given to it. He's the father of one of the original members who dropped out early, Fuzz. Yea Fuzzdad did some map packs (CAMP I believe they were called). Mugsy one of the original devs did some minor updates to DoD:S, achievements and such.
I stopped playing because the community. For a start, half of the community were foreign, so I couldn't understand or have communication. The rest were either little kids, people who generally didn't communicate. And if you did encounter people who spoke English and could communicate, most of them would ignore people who text completely. Some would be in Units, who are very serious with how people play. So I used to see people arguing usually and a lot of raging in the Units. Its hard to find people to play with that didn't make you feel left out unless you were in a Unit. At times I'd just play normally, but I could never get used to the gameplay as it started to get boring. After a bit, I sorta quit the game and never really played it again.
Hmm, a lot of the pubs I regular on generally have responsible enough players. You get the occasional troll or kid, but I've come across more mature players than non-mature as of recently.
i played both goldsrc and source competitively. also realism is a good concept, just not done right because of how uptight people are and how bad it plays out in an action-y shooter like dod. it works better in games like resistance & liberation and red orchestra.
I don't play this much, never quite figured it out but I'd be happy to join a game with youse.
Edit
orange maps are more frequent in goldsrc than they are in source, but even then there are a few orange maps. try to find servers that are run by a RP group or something, those always have stock maps and good custom maps.
Day of defeat could have became a strong WW2 FPS but now it lives off community maps (Ugh orange maps) and mods. Dod_strand was a great map
