[release] Sharp-eared music fans will have already found the haunting track “Exile Vilify” by The National in Portal 2. Clearly Rat Man is a big fan of of the song, based on some of the art decorating the walls of his dens. But as any museum fan can tell you, there’s nothing a fancypants painting can say that a YouTube video can’t say a hundred times better. That’s where you come in. “Exile Vilify” doesn’t have a music video, and we’d like you to correct this horrendous oversight with the Portal 2 Music Video Contest. Make the winning video and you’ll receive an Eastwood guitar, signed by The National. You’ll also win the ultimate box of schwag from Valve, including shirts, posters, and other stuff we’ll be grabbing off co-workers desks when they’re not looking. Plus bonus shirts from Jinx. Direct your video vision with live action, game assets, shots of the band, sock puppets, whatever you want. Just make sure you get it submitted with the tag PORTAL2NATIONALEXILE to YouTube by July 15th. For more information on The National visit their web site American Mary. For more information on Portal 2, here's a link back to the official website. But that’s not all! Are you a huge fan of long, tedious legalese explaining the minutiae of contest rules? Then your ship has come in, friend. Read on! http://www.thinkwithportals.com/videocontest/ There's also rules but its a fuckton long and boring.[/release] I also realize this was already posted in the Megathread, but this is just for the people who don't watch the thread anymore.
I hope someone with mad skills makes an animated version in the style of the rattman wall scrawlings/comic
Time to bring out the hipster bullshit side of me!
I want the rest of the OST released. But this is kinda cool
I hope someone with mad skills makes an animated version in the style of the rattman wall scrawlings/comic
thats actually a really good idea i'd love to see the history of aperture detailed through semi-animated rattman drawings
Am I the only who noticed that they forgot to post a download link for the song?
Am I the only who noticed that they forgot to post a download link for the song?
As silly as it sounds, I don't believe they can give out a link for free simply because it was just licensed out from The National.
Working on my entry right now, but I can't say it's anything spectacular. Just a few chop ups. And I think its beautiful. edit: It's a w.i.p but I still have 3 mins to go in the full thing. You guys are meanies. I'd atleast like to see you have a go. I did mention that I was going to IMPROVE.
I think you have more a chance to win if you make your own footage.
I did mention that on SPUF, but I didn't type it out here. Too quick to judge.
The winner is solely responsible for any taxes applicable to the prize.
That means the winner has to pay for the shipping, right? If so, I can't enter because I imagine the shipping taxes for Europe are sky high. Well, there goes my chance to win some Valve schwag. :C
I'm making a kinetic typography video with nothing but Sony Vegas AND MY BARE HANDS. It's going surprisingly well. Even if it doesn't win maybe I'll get effort swag. ...
this video was made over a month ago and it'll still at least be a runner up (not mine) even though it's just a run through the game it's still really nice
BEHOOOLD, my (shitty) video!
I just don't know what you're going for. Typography is fine, but that is just text with occasional font/color changes, on a plain background. Good typography portrays the emotion/emphasis of the song/whatever using the text.
you didn't do anything anybody could do that
I'm going to improve. I did say its a preview.
I'm working with two friends on an entry. All I'm gonna say is it requires a lot of greenscreening and a fake beard.
I was gonna do something involving this lab coat I have hanging on my door use your imagination

I really do wish we had longer than a month. It's hard to think of decent ideas that are easily achievable in that time frame, at least with available resources.
So I decided to try my chances regardless, and tried to pull two test videos together, using the Demo Recorder in Portal 2's dev console. ...But I abandoned the second test video after realizing that Demo Recorder was going to be pointless to work with outside of recording — well — demo videos. So unless Source Film Maker comes out next week, I probably won't be doing anything for Exile Vilify. v:v:v I still wanted to see how pretty I could make my footage, so I threw it into After Effects, slapped it with a little faked lens blur and chromatic aberration, and treated it with extra dust particles. My laptop doesn't support anti-aliasing in Portal 2, so there's nothing I can do about the aliasing despite my efforts. Ambient music is by me, I threw it together especially for this video.
Well I'm fucked again
So here's what I got right now. Please tell me what I can change. I want to make this as good as possible

I want to make this as good as possible
Well, for one thing, most of it was just a bunch of still shots of scenes. Maybe make the cameras slide a bit slowly, to keep it flowing? Though its fine as it is.

Uploading a WIP now, dunno what to think of it :ohdear: Sorry for low quality, wanted it to be a quick upload.

I want to make this as good as possible
On editing: There were a couple of spots where you'd fade to another shot, which felt out of place as the majority of your shots were simply cuts — Consistency was lost. And the rapid cuts (during the choruses) are paced too quickly, it's a bit of an information overload. On the ending: Invest in a tripod, or something to keep the camera stable. Try to color correct the shots as well, it's too yellow in comparison to the game shots. Personally, I don't like that the video shows half of everything throughout Portal 2. It means that people who have yet to play the game will have the reveal of these areas spoiled. I know it's a music video for a song in a video game, but there's little indicator that the viewer is going to see scenes from the entire game. I hope this doesn't sound too harsh, just thoughts and opinions. edit: I think it's worth mentioning this video below for everyone. It was done in April, long before the contest was announced. It's a very easy and accessible idea for everyone to create (It was the first "easy" idea I could think of, before I realized it'd already been done), and chances are there will be a lot of people making similar things for this contest, simply because we don't have the resources available to make anything else.
I don't think any ingame videos are going to work guys
