Yesterday, Notch posted an image of a massive mountain on his Twitter feed. But that’s not all. Look closely at said image. See the bar that looks a bit like an XP bar? It is an XP bar, but it also brings something extra – permadeath. In a forthcoming update to Minecraft, not only will you be able to gain levels. You’ll lose your levelling progress if you die.
“I’m a big roguelike fan,” explains Notch. “It’s really fun. The idea is that you level up really, really fast. You can grind away and level up fast if you want to, or you can just play as normal and level up that way. The longer you play, the bigger the risk of dying becomes. It’s the part that really works. If it feels like it’s too harsh, we might make it half or something like that. But the fact that you lose everything – you lose all your inventory anyways.”
The Minecraft developer is still figuring out how players will level. “I’m not entirely sure on how the levelling is going to work, because that part isn’t as fun. We’re trying to figure out something that is fun, and kinda lightweight. We’re thinking of getting an automated XP system. It’s not implemented in any way that makes any kind of sense at the moment.”
Adding progression and permadeath could be a risky move for Minecraft’s vast playerbase. I asked Notch whether he’s concerned about ruining the purity of the game he’s created.
“It’s the biggest risk,” he acknowledges. “We have to make sure that it’s fun, and as streamlined as possible. I kind of figured out that a really good test of what works or not is when I go back to 1.7.3 – the previous version. If it feels like it’s lacking that feature, if it feels like it should be in there.
“But it’s what I like about roguelikes, like Nethack – everything is dangerous.”
Great idea, helps separate out Survival and the Creative mode that's being added.
seems fine with me, but I'm sure others will have a problem.
he should really just hit the best of both worlds and make it toggle-able
i bet gaining experience will crash the game
I'm up for this.
I'm not too sure about the permadeath idea. But hopefully it will be fun.
i bet gaining experience will crash the game
It's Notch, of course it will mess up the game.
In my opinion, the xp should be given out when you mine coal redstone diamond and lapis
But not iron and gold for obvious reasons
Killing monsters should give you xp too
If permadeath is going to be implemented then it has to be toggleable. I'm more into playing for fun, exploring lots of areas and doing crazy stuff.

Killing Monsters is okay, but the experience by mining is a bad idea.
How is this going to work with Multiplayer then? You just get banned or something when you lose all your levels?
I'm fine with this though either way, I just wanna know how it's going to work.
Hopefully permadeath will be toggleable.
So I wonder if that's less of an XP bar, and more of a Level bar.
So I wonder if that's less of an XP bar, and more of a Level bar.
not much of a difference
So what would be the reward of leveling?

I dont think it means permadeath like that. I'm pretty sure its just that you lose all of the experience and levels that you've gained when you die.
Not sure how I feel about this, seems neat on paper, but I can only imagine it going horribly quite often when you're in the game.
I'm not sure what to think about this myself, but I trust Notch enough to do it right. Even if he does make buggy things, nearly all of his gameplay decisions to this point were excellent.
I hope the leveling is like Fallout 3's, choose different perks at each level. Would make leveling up more of an option, I think.
The only thing I don't like about this is how I'll be even more pissed off if I die.
Now instead of just falling into lava and losing all my items, I will also go back to level 1.

Making stuff toggle-able is dumb, games need a focused design not having an option for every feature possible.
Yet it will oddly enough take 2 months. ( Best case )
Even if it's not toggleable, there will be a mod that makes it so.
So i'm not very concerned.
Whenever I die I just start a whole new world anyway, this'll just make it more interesting.

There's an easy solution to that, it involves not dying.
i would quite like it if levelling gave you points like in World Of Warcraft, they could then have a web just like the achievement's, you buy 1 and the rest around our unlocked, you could then choose mining or fighting or defence, each would give you a skill to help with what you chose
If permadeath is added, creepers will have to start making sounds or there's going to be outrageous bullshit going on.
Y'know, if you actually do lose XP when you die, your corpse should drop some XP orbs, so you can salvage at least some of your advancement if you can make it back to where you died. Perhaps even try "backing up" XP in Books, so that you can retain experience in a sort of library.
Permadeath is a bad idea.

Or maybe leveling up increases your maximum health and perhaps offers perks like resistance to explosions. I always thought that minecraft could be cool if you could gain perks. Things like more durable tools, or the ability to double jump. Things that make the game more fun but are not 100% needed. It would be cool if you could double or even triple your maximum HP, and perhaps have a perk that restores your life steadily over time, things like that.
Permadeath is a bad idea.
It is for the people who experiment more, or for when you randomly get owned by a creeper. If it just means losing all of your XP, which you then quickly get back, it may not be such a bad idea.
Permadeath is a bad idea.
it's probably gonna end up like hardcore in terraria sans the dropped items
you lose what you are carrying, all xp and boosts from it, but the world stays the same. possibly chests are emptied too.
