Click the link below for the download and changelog. Download Latest Version + View Changelog Source Sound Player is a small, lightweight program that allows players of Source (and in most cases GoldSrc) games to play WAV audio over the in-game microphone. It is meant to be the successor of Half-Life Sound Selector. Features: - Clean, modern interface - Playlist-specific game directories - Batch add sounds - Scroll through sounds in-game - Online support - Built-in MP3 converter
I'll give it a try.
Well from what I can tell from the thing itself, Looks tad cleaner and easier to setup then Hlss mainly cause you have the directory right on the front instead of having to go into the menu. Plus automatic buttons for ctrl alt and shift as modifiers is very nice. Though I'm kinda upset it doesn't use the same playlist file type as hlss so I can't use my old playlists. Also is there a chance you can add a Batch sound adder to it? So you can multiple sounds at once and can give them their own hotkeys aswell. That way you don't have to add a song close menu repeat etc. Would be very usefull. Forgot to say saving is easier to. You don't have to hit the thumbs up button then hit save for it to save the list.
Still wont beat HLDJ and its ingame GUI
Also another thing to add. I thought the modifier was decent but I remember in hlss I would do ctr + alt + shift + a button at the same time but you have it where you can only allow one at a time. Maybe make it so you can check them off to use multiple ones at once? [editline]10:48PM[/editline]
Still wont beat HLDJ and its ingame GUI
Of course cause having to spam chat or look in console to see the song I selected is so much better. Cause you can't just hit the button and it tells you at the top of the screen what it is. You either have to do the command that shows it in chat or waste time and look in console.

HLSS used INI files which you either had to use a crappy parser or spend a shitfuck ton of time parsing manually. I'm using simple comma-delimited files. As for multiple modifiers, I can definitely do that. Personally I only used one so I didn't think it would be a big deal if I left that out. A batch adder is definitely on my list of things to do. I don't think it would be that hard to implement and the results would be fantastic. I've also fixed a few bugs, including not being able to edit sounds in the list already (it would complain that it was already in) and an unhandled exception on one of the save routines. I'm also adding a right-click context menu to the list so you don't have to highlight and click the toolbar. Will be releasing tomorrow.

Hope to see everything implemented as soon as you can do it.

Is the quality is better than hldj's? I will just wait for more updates to come.
Is the quality is better than hldj's? I will just wait for more updates to come.
The quality will depend on however you convert the sound files. I think a lot of people don't understand that these programs don't do anything with the audio short of copying them to the game directory. The game handles all audio playback, and to make sure it does that right it needs to be converted correctly.
Well that's good to hear. Hope to see everything implemented as soon as you can do it.
I got the batch sound adder, multiple modifiers, right-click context menu, and another bug fix coded last night. I'll be releasing v0.0.2 Beta today after work. I think I'll also add an auto-update/update notification system to it.
I'm sorry but it looks exactly like HLSS like I pointed out last time you made a thread here. All you've done to me is give a similar application a face lift.
Instead of some fancy ingame UI which would be tricky to code... Why not take advantage of the web browser? Run a localhost web server and control it from there.
Instead of some fancy ingame UI which would be tricky to code... Why not take advantage of the web browser? Run a localhost web server and control it from where.
No. What I would like to see in this application is the ability to have a predefined list of games, and their respective directories. I often switch between games very frequently in HLSS, and going C -> Program Files -> Steam -> steamapps .... all the time is frustrating. The ability to select a game such as "Team Fortress 2" from a dropdown would be a godsend.
Because remembering all the slots used and wasting slots is not a waste of time in HLSS ?
It isn't a waste of time. Especially if you are putting the sounds in ABC order which usually you would do. Also there is no "wasting" slots. Doing ctrl + a letter/number doesn't screw anything up. You are still able to use ctrl for crouch or whatever you use it for. Also once you use a hotkey for awhile if something you use alot you tend to remember where something is.

I'm amassing the directories from the HLSS site as I don't own most of the games so I'll either put a search or a help button.
I'm sorry but it looks exactly like HLSS like I pointed out last time you made a thread here. All you've done to me is give a similar application a face lift.
Remember that HLSS is not actively developed anymore and hasn't been updated in 7 years. This is also a beta release; I have a lot more features planned. Already it is cleaner than HLSS and offers a better playlist format (for example, game directories are tied to playlists), and has a batch sound adder. I'm also considering building in an MP3-to-WAV feature. If you have any suggestions to make this better than HLSS, please let me know.
I'm going to test it, looks real nice.
Still wont beat HLDJ and its ingame GUI
Of course, why enjoy high quality sounds, if you can have some crappy and laggy HLDJ music?
I appreciate your patience. I've been working hard on getting a new site coded and articles written. I hope to finish sometime tonight, and if not definitely tomorrow. Stay tuned! [editline]12:29AM[/editline] The new website and version (0.0.2 Beta) has been released. Visit www.ssp.phreakyourgeek.com to download. OP updated.
Of course, why enjoy high quality sounds, if you can have some crappy and laggy HLDJ music?
high quality sounds HLSS oh man this guy is so funny, five him a medal already.
Of course, why enjoy high quality sounds, if you can have some crappy and laggy HLDJ music?
Because 16bit mono wavs are "High quality".
Of course, why enjoy high quality sounds, if you can have some crappy and laggy HLDJ music?
*Ahem* HLSS and HLDJ files are exactly the same. There is little to no difference, and the quality loss from converting them to 16 bit is noticeable enough anyway.

It basically requires you to type in your Steam name and it finds the game directories for you.
Wait, so whats better to use? HLDJ, HLSS, or SSP?
Wait, so whats better to use? HLDJ, HLSS, or SSP?
From what I see SSP or it will be soon if not already. I know this has already been asked/mentioned but you said it uses the exact script as HLSS right? So I don't have to edit my autoexec from where it is now?

The Getting Started guide on the SSP website includes a script you can use if you don't already have one.
Wait, so whats better to use? HLDJ, HLSS, or SSP?
Source Sound Player is meant to be the successor to Half-Life Sound Selector. It's interface is similar and it has a few more features, plus active development. I'm also brainstorming on implementing a team or all chat "heads up" message when you play a sound. It wouldn't be too hard to implement.
You should not have to. Alot of times when I go to save a hotkey I Hit cancel instead of save cause I'm used to it being the other way around. Also you think it's possible to add the black bar at the top of the screen that says the name of the file you selected like HLSS did?

It'll get time to get used to, but I think the change is for the better. I'd be happy to add spacing, perhaps even align the Cancel button to the left, if I get more complaints. As for the "black bar", I was planning something similar or showing chat messages in-game. I'll be testing various solutions and will update the program when one is implemented.

The Black bar is fine if you can do it. Some other form of thing showing the thing you selected. Aslong as it doesn't involved ingame console or chat. Easier if it was popped up on screen only for you to see (like the black bar) or something esle in the sort. Also I'm not trying to be mean or demanding I'm just trying to make it easier and funner to use. I prefer the black bar of HLSS over the dumb ingame commands of HLDJ
I liked that idea that involved the steam overlay and a local website to control songlplaying.
Here's what I did for the "black bar" - I call it the Heads Up Display: I'm also still working on the auto-detect game directory function.
